So we owe him $36 million total. Wouldn't we have paid him about $28 million after 4 years?

If he works for a year he’ll earn 6.8 or so. Then we’d owe him 75% of the 42.2. Half within a month the rest within the year. So after three years we’d owe him 75% of 28.5ish. A little over 21. Still a lot IMO. Too much IMO.

Pretty amazing how that all went down. Was a nut hair away from getting canned and then two weeks later he signs a 49 milly contract extension. Game of Thrones shit right there

The unbelievable timing of it is so damn frustrating to me.

If the Arkansas job isn't open he has zero leverage. He could try and act like someone else was coming, but not even the AU admin was going to believe that crap. The one place that would make him a dumb offer and that he'd be tempted to leave for that wasn't an upgrade happens to open up. Which at one point looked like it might help us get rid of him, till he got 2 huge wins and the coaching market tanked with everyone going other places early.

An unbelievable mix of bad luck and ineptitude that has us tied to a guy who at times makes you think he can do the job, but other times leaves you 100% convinced he's a barely literate country bumpkin.

Not really. Could've told him he had a contract, honor it one way or another. Plenty of decent coaching options out there.

No one cares anymore. I wish I cared about Auburn winning like I used to but I just don't. We are stuck with this dude. Maybe he can win... Whatever . I'm a basketball fan as long as Bruce is here.

I think the best thing to do was to offer a modest extension. Maybe a 10% raise over a 3 year span. Something to match a few expectations being met.

Inevitably Malzahn comes back with Arkansas' offer. We ask him to sleep on it. He then decides whether or not he wants to give up access to Auburn-level talent to bang his head on the wall in Arkansas.

If he comes back and meets in the middle somewhere, great. If he decides to take the Arkansas job. We have a massive budget to hire a pretty good coach or save some money and hire someone like Brohm.

Either way, I don't believe in being held hostage to modestly successful coaches anymore.

1 day later he gets blown out by our 2nd biggest rival and a few weeks after that he loses to USC. If this was Game of Thrones, his head would be on a fvcking pike.

I keep seeing post and comments from my Auburn friends that the market and his performance dictated this raise. Thats bullchit. His performance dictated an incentive based contract with little to no buyout. Giving a coach with a somewhat erratic and most certainly mediocre performance history a massive buyout is beyond stupid.

I lost a lot of faith in Leath that day.

I talked to Rane back in December. He was hoping for Gus to take the Arky job.

A poster stated that Rane was livid when he heard about the contract. I still can’t fathom how Harbert and Leath agreed to sign off on the guaranteed money.

Wouldn't surprise me. Rane is a Bauce with balls and Harbert is a pre-made rich that got wealthier bc of his parents. Rane is more like lowder....which is what we need

It’s all about fear. They were afraid Gus would go to Arkansas and be 2013/parts of 2017 Gus all the time and make them look foolish for a decade. They also feared a replacement failing vs Saban and Smart. In their minds at least Gus had just beaten both and had won a few head to heads with Saban previously.

Small, fear based thinking. Poor way to make decisions but not all that unusual really. IMO it took UGA about 4 years too long to push Richt out and they are lucky Kirby wasn’t the HC at Texas or in the NFL by the time they grew balls and made a move. They could easily be the ones stuck with a Butch Jones/Jim McElwain type had they run into the prodigal son being setup elsewhere.

Good post, but I don’t understand the fear aspect. Every time you hire a new coach you’re taking a risk. There are exceptions obviously, Saban to uat. But it’s a gamble. Always has been. The mantra on the Bunker is “ who could we have gotten that is better?” We don’t know, that’s the whole point.

OU didn’t know what they were getting when they hired Stoops. Same with Dabo at CU, Boom at UF. and Kirby at UGA. They took a risk. If our hillbilly coach went to Arkansas, because we laughed at the money he wanted, why not take a chance on the CU OC? He’s young, has done a great job with their offense, and he has a reputation as an excellent recruiter.

We could have gotten him for 5 million a year for four years. You think he would do worse than Malzahn? He might lose 4 a year like Gus. Or he might be a great coach. At least we don’t have to pay this absurd buyout.

BTW Ron Jeramye, I loved your films from back in the day. You were an underrated actor.
