AUBURN, Ala. — After missing all of this season with eligibility issues, Danjel Purifoy will be cleared to return for most of next season for Auburn basketball.

According to an Auburn spokesperson, the NCAA has ruled that Purifoy will be eligible “after the first 30 percent of next basketball season.” The statement also stated that Purifoy “is happy with the decision and excited for next season.”

“We worked diligently with the NCAA on behalf of both our student-athletes who were ineligible this season,” Auburn president Steven Leath said in a statement. “The process was arduous, but it was important that we do everything we could to put Danjel Purifoy and Austin Wiley in the best position to resume their Auburn basketball careers. We’re happy for them and their teammates and coaches.”

Auburn played 30 games in the 2017-18 regular season. Thirty percent of that total would approximately be nine games, which means he could return for the end of nonconference play and the entire SEC schedule.

Purifoy sat out the entire 2017-18 season due to his family’s connection to a federal complaint that led to the firing of former assistant coach Chuck Person. Purifoy and Wiley, who in January was cleared to play the entire 2018-19 season, did not play a single minute for the regular-season SEC champions.

Purifoy averaged 11.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game during his redshirt freshman season in 2016-17. The 6-foot-8 native of Centreville, Ala., started 25 games, mainly as the Tigers’ power forward.

On Sunday night, after Auburn’s season ended with a loss to Clemson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, coach Bruce Pearl said the team didn’t have any update on Purifoy.

Purifoy redshirted the 2015-16 season for Auburn due to other eligibility issues. He was a top-50 player in high school and was ranked the No. 1 recruit in Alabama by 247Sports.

Saw it posted elsewhere that he was an 88% FT shooter for us last year. If he can stay healthy, play the 2 or 3, stop settling for 3's and drive the ball, he could live at the line and destroy or opponents with FT's. He's a big body that can get to the rim and draw fouls all night long. I think the next step in the evolution of this basketball team is to maintain what we did this year but build on that by placing an emphasis on purposefully making other teams foul us in the paint. So many teams tried to do that to us, especially once MAC went down. If we do indeed return this entire team, I could see DP, Heron, and Wiley absolutely crushing the inside (provided that all develop that killer instinct to do so). Anyway, just my non-educated opinion on the subject. Please feel free to discuss and correct me where I'm wrong.

I’m happy that he’s back. Curious to see where everyone fits in next year. You got Harper and Brown as most definite starters. All other 3 could easily be filled by different people. Lots of depth on this Boog squad even if Wiley and Heron leave

He's an excellent shooter all around. I guess he didn't like having to defend down low but he'd be a prototype 4 for Bruce if he would. I thought his whole season got derailed by the ankle injury. He showed flashes of being able to take it to the rim but not nearly enough. If he's gotten more confidence in that part of his game he'll be a straight up stud. He seems to have indicated he'll be playing with an anger and a chip when he's back. Pretty psyched to see what that looks like.

I honestly don't know about Brown. I think the he's pretty much a D&3 ($1 to @DufnerFanBoy or @jeramye I think) type guy with a fragile mindset. Heron seems to be the clear cut favorite to start at the wing of those two. I could easily see Brown being relegated to coming off the bench and DJ taking the 2 spot if he seriously shows some toughness through the summer and fall camps. Like @Denim Vest, I think his ankle injury seriously derailed his ability to shoot, much less drive to the hoop. But back to Brown, I think his D will serve him well and help him to keep fighting for that starting spot. I guess we're truly in a position where our biggest problem is going to be finding the minutes that we need to give to all of these studs. But, I'm going to go ahead and say that DP will probably be coming off the bench for his for 10 games back or so since we will have to have a designated starter in place and we wouldn't want to just insert him as a starter and fracture any cohesion that may be built. But I can easily see a scenario where he supplants Brown at the two. And I just do not see him at the 4. His personality on the court just doesn't lend itself to that, in my humble opinion.

I'm a bit Mizzou on Danjel because of his effort defensively pre-ankle and then how mediocre he looked after. But he was a freshman who sat a year from playing competitive games so I'm willing to believe that was more of a fluke that who he really can be.

He's got all the tools to be really, really good. He's got to put in the effort on defense/glass and then be smart offensively by not setting for 3's all the time. His handle scared me too, but that's fixable. Hoping he proves all my doubts wrong.

It’s gling to be very difficult for Bruce to figure out the puzzle to maximize our talent but if he does.....
