AUBURN, Ala. — After missing all of this season with eligibility issues, Danjel Purifoy will be cleared to return for most of next season for Auburn basketball.
According to an Auburn spokesperson, the NCAA has ruled that Purifoy will be eligible “after the first 30 percent of next basketball season.” The statement also stated that Purifoy “is happy with the decision and excited for next season.”
“We worked diligently with the NCAA on behalf of both our student-athletes who were ineligible this season,” Auburn president Steven Leath said in a statement. “The process was arduous, but it was important that we do everything we could to put Danjel Purifoy and Austin Wiley in the best position to resume their Auburn basketball careers. We’re happy for them and their teammates and coaches.”
Auburn played 30 games in the 2017-18 regular season. Thirty percent of that total would approximately be nine games, which means he could return for the end of nonconference play and the entire SEC schedule.
Purifoy sat out the entire 2017-18 season due to his family’s connection to a federal complaint that led to the firing of former assistant coach Chuck Person. Purifoy and Wiley, who in January was cleared to play the entire 2018-19 season, did not play a single minute for the regular-season SEC champions.
Purifoy averaged 11.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game during his redshirt freshman season in 2016-17. The 6-foot-8 native of Centreville, Ala., started 25 games, mainly as the Tigers’ power forward.
On Sunday night, after Auburn’s season ended with a loss to Clemson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, coach Bruce Pearl said the team didn’t have any update on Purifoy.
Purifoy redshirted the 2015-16 season for Auburn due to other eligibility issues. He was a top-50 player in high school and was ranked the No. 1 recruit in Alabama by 247Sports.
