OT: Gus whining like a baby

I actually don't disagree with him on what the SEC Network has become. It's all centered about Finebaum basically now, and Finebaum has bragged for years and years that he's the guy that gets SEC coaches fired. That's his entire core foundation. He's the guy that fans go nuts with and he pours gas on every single fire.

Still it's horribly dumb for a coach to say it. But Gus must be feeling quite protected now with his big deal and guaranteed $$. Let see if it makes him lazy and more incompetent or if he wakes up and realizes he can coach with his balls out whenever he likes now that he's locked in.

would a stronger man than me have already been able to cut ties completely and stop following such an incompetent AD and head corches? do I continue to do this to myself because I’m too weak to leave? do I have battered women’s syndrome? battered barner syndrome?

or... is the only reason I’ve been able to survive this long without having every ounce of joy robbed from following something I absolutely loved as a naive, young child, because I’m stronger than any reasonable person should be?

am I too weak? or stronger than I realize?

these are the questions facing us with Gus in charge

I think the one about the au job being easier to get than a texas HS job was clearly a joke.

the other two are both kind of fair. Just depends how you interpret them I guess. I think the one about the SEC network confirms to everyone that he struggles under pressure though

Yeah but he's too much of a goob to tell a decent joke. I'm sure he's just sucking up to some HS corches in the room. Still wants everyone to know he's just a HS ball coach. We know.

100% being an AU fan builds character. It's the reason most bama fans don't have any. They really never have had to struggle for long, and in their brief struggles they just fall back on their tradition and history and refuse to admit they are struggling. Being an AU fan demands much more toughness and strength.

We may be the strongest people in all of college fandom in all honestly. We have to be to stay sane.

I honestly don't have a problem with the quote about winning a HS title feeling the same as winning a NC. When you coach something, that probably does feel basically the same. You prep preseason, you live every single game like it's the most important thing in the world, you have goals and an ultimate goal of winning it all and in each situation you win at the absolute peak allowed at your current station. I really think guys like Saban would tell you the same exact thing if they had started at the HS level. He'd tell you it was the same process and just as rewarding to him personally even if the college level was much more viewed and got more attention. While fans level of focus and intensity at the HS level pales in comparison to that at the college level, I do think coaches are equally invested in winning at whatever level they are at and that obsession means a HS state title feels like the mountaintop.

Gus is still a total goob though. Don't get it twisted. And his statement about the SEC Network may be accurate but it totally is a sign that he doesn't like pressure and that it absolutely got to him. Which means we're in for a rough ride in the coming 3-4 years before we pay him a ton of coin to go away.

If you could keep the $$$ out of it I might agree. Just say Gussie was making 100,000 in Arkie as a big time HS coach. He’d probably get a 25,000 Booster Club bonus for winning a ship. And yes, those figures are way on the high side. We will have paid him 400,000 combined the last two years for making a NYD6 bowl, and he lost both. Would’ve made another million if he had won the Ship twice....I can’t fathom it being the same.

I think I'm a Barner the way coke heads are coke heads. I got my first hit a long time ago, and it was the best high I ever felt, and now I'm just chasing that high every fall, even though I know I'll never feel that way again. AU sports was the best thing ever when I was a kid in the 80s. I came online as a fan during the Bo, Barkley, and The Big Hurt days. It will never be that good again.

I just disagree with the idea that the SEC Network tries to get coaches fired. Finebaum says that on his radio show, and he's a big talking head. But he's not influencing people that will fire a HC. And I think it's wrong to say that even the casual fan would be influenced by a talking head over what they see. I know of people who have no ties to message boards and don't watch the SECN that wanted Gus fired at times this year. It's just a bush league comment from him about something that isn't correct IMO.

You’re just a masochist at heart like the rest of us.

wasn't he basically poor as a young coordinator making like 30k in rural Arkansas. You go from that to making 120k in Springdale and that feels insanely life changing at the age he was I bet.

The problem as a fan hearing this and knowing the numbers its that it should be bigger. It should mean much more. Losses should matter a lot more at this level too. So it doesn't feel right to hear it compared to the HS stuff as the same. But I actually think from a coaches point of view, it kinda is. I'd guess that Jim Tressel would tell you that the feeling was either very similar or the same winning titles at Youngstown State and OSU even though one is obviously a much bigger accomplishment on his resume.

I remember hearing Belichick say the thrill of a Super Bowl title was no different than leading his daughter’s youth soccer team to a league championship.

As far as Boog football nothing will ever top CAM and 2010. Now that 99 hoops squad that still curses me. Still chasing that final 4 run.

I think any time you work your ass off and dedicate yourself to something and achieve your goals, then the feeling is pretty much the same no matter what the stakes are. I don't think that just applies to coaches. If you asked most business owners what their proudest moments are, I bet a lot of them would say that their early, less lucrative, successes are just as meaningful as their bigger ones just bc they worked just as hard for them.

The quote about the sec network though comes across as sour grapes to me. SEC head coaches are paid millions. Ain't no one gonna have too much sympathy for you.

Yeah but I don’t think it’s too tactful when you are currently employed to say that stuff. Kinda disrespectful of the job paying you that much more. I don’t know it’s not really a biggie I just think the quote is dumb for a few reasons.

I'm sorry princess. Do you need a safe space from people who have different opinions from yours? And way to be classy.
It’s a message board, I can say whatever I want to the intellectually inferior and brainwashed. Point stands.

Plus negative 'crootin. "You want to play for a coach that thinks winning the Arkansas NAIA Championship is the same as winning the CFP? If so, maybe you're not as motivated of player as we thought you were."

I'm neither of those things, and you've made no point, only whined like a little girl because someone said something on the internet that hurt your feelings. It's pretty sad you let someone rustle to the point of telling them to leave, because you don't agree with them. I hope you have thicker skin in real life than you do in anonymity.
