Our next stud we could write an @Eagle5 novel on. We’ve been through so much. From the #FreeDanjel campaign of which Denim was personally thanked, to the twitter attack on the hacks associated with a 3rd rate standardized testing regime, to the call to burn down their HQ as well as the AU AD. Young Danjel has been a polarizing figure for so long and continues to be.

A hulking youngster with the prototype NBA physique, Danjel sat squarely atop my ranks of sexy studs from 2015 through the beginning of last season. At that point he revealed himself as a terrible defender too reliant on an inconsistent 3 ball. Things only got worse as that rotten Saiz injured our star player and he was shelved for a couple weeks. The low point came when he was thoroughly abused by SEC POY Sindarius Thornwell. Things improved marginally from there but the book on Danjel was out. A total liability on D that was afraid of contact on both ends of the floor.

Strengths: NBA body and plus athlete for his size. Good shooter, particularly FREE THROWS.

Weaknesses: Plays soft. Has no comprehension of playing defense without fouling. Settles for outside shots instead of attacking.

Contribution: Undetermined. He’s the most likely to sit due the findings of the FBI report. Presumed starter at the 3 otherwise. I liked him a lot more at the 4 in theory but just too terrible on D and doesn’t play to his physique down low or on the glass. I fear he’ll be exposed by quicker athletes and his shot never seemed too consistent to me and that was with the wide open looks he got at the 4. Still, the potential is there and reports have been glowing this offseason that his shooting and willingness to attack have improved.

The GREG Ranking: #3

So much potential but he's got to be so much better this year for me to jump on board. I mean, he wasn't even average last year.

So much potential yet so many mental issues. He’s the Byron Cowart/Jeremy Johnson of the b-ball program. Hopefully Bruce can nurture his talent and confidence better than Gus could for those other two
Yeah I have a lot more confidence in BRUCE getting a player over any mental issues. I'm fairly confident he can elevate his game on O but he looked pretty hopeless on D.

Some on staff still think he's the best player on the team. I'm skeptical but I've heard good things this summer and fall. Hoping he gets his shot this year. We will see. I think he would be the only guy that could possibly miss time.
He looked like it first 10 games or so last year. Seems like a distant memory but if he can improve on O and just be serviceable on D could be in for a deep tourney run.

I'm hoping we aren't afraid to play some more zone D this year too. Think that might suit us better.

Interesting. He probably has the most nba potential on the team if he can just get his head right.

Good point on the inbounding. Psyched to have some cold blooded killers like Desean and CHUMA handle those duties this season.

looks like DANJEL and SWEET JARED are where I’ll differ from most of you heading into the season... even though he’s ranked 3rd, it seems few people itt expect him to play to that level this year...

I won’t go through the entire breakdown that I did a few weeks back, but I chalk up most of Danjel’s issues to:

- fear of foul trouble after a few early season struggles
- injury and the resulting loss of confidence

maybe he’s destined to be a tease and just will never get there mentally to maximize his enormous talent, but I’m more than cautiously optimistic... I’ve got him 4th but he could easily be 2nd (I don’t see any way Mustapha isn’t the clear #1)

all of his warts have been discussed above, but before the injury sapped him of any agility, he was a gamechanging floor stretcher and shooter... not just solid, he was a legitimate weapon in the half court... he didn’t rebound the way we needed, but I don’t think it was from laziness or softness, because he still was contributing steals and deflections and was adequate in our press... I don’t think he stopped driving and rebounding out of softness, but because he was terrified of foul trouble... it wasn’t an inability to defend as much as it was being paralyzed by indecision

I guess I just think that’s a more correctable issue than Jeremy or Byron... DANJEL just needs to get healthy, stay healthy, get comfortable with his role and teammates, and play without pressure and without overthinking... just go play, and everyone here will love his game

hope this kid finds a roll this year that doesn't involve turning the ball over endlessly and maybe reacquaints himself with bucket
