+++++ Bama vs Boogs (HYGs) Official Game Thread +++++

Not sure if anyone else was as triggered as I was by us sticking with the zone. It made me furious even all the way back to the first half. It worked well for a handful of possessions and they they figure out how to get open looks with ease and WE JUST STAYED IN IT ANYWAY????

Late they were pushing the ball and people were wide open because instead of finding a man we were trying to figure out how to get into the zone. I hated every single bit of that. Especially when Austin wasn't in...maybe I get it when he's in there but when he was out and we stayed in zone I wanted to punch a baby
We had a couple lazy close outs after the 16-0 start then shit hit the fan. I kinda blacked out and just figured we’d win most of it but we got all fugged up trying to take away Kira on the drive and inexplicably left guys open that were hot. Oh well free boog hoops again in OT so ok whatev.

The one where Samir left the red hot shooter to go cover someone else made me furious. We had a few of those moments.

One one hand we had tons of mistakes and didn't take advantage of some things like we should have (we had a ton of OREBs but let them get enough that it discounted it too much) but we survived a team going nuts from 3 on huge volume.

I'm just going by fantasy soccer stuff. I'm no expert. Just know a pulled hammy for a PL player is usually 3 weeks max

The "not a tear" thing is huge. I've seen guys miss a lot more than a few weeks with the tear

Like my Spurs with Harry Kane right now

Yeah he should def go. Petty too. Hopefully they have a nice run in the NIT to improve their draft status.

they are very JR heavy. My guess is that Kira goes cause the smart NBA Draft guys like him and I don't think he's gonna come back and prove much that he hasn't already. Petty probably should go but may try to come back and have a monster year...he's impressed with his ability to produce some points without it all being 3's and improved his defense.

If everyone came back they'd be real trouble. They had the pieces and Avery was just a bad coach.

Don’t you wanna go interact with jay and all the goobs about your tweet?

Also, nothing like getting banned and beating bama in the same night.

I almost don’t want to speak or type this out loud - by then way Isaac flys around, there have been 10-12 times already this year he went down and I thought he had been broken in half

dude is tough, tough, tough... so just the fact he didn’t bounce up scares the shit out of me, and he almost crumpled when he did stand up

now, the good thing is, basketball players - by and large - are tremendous pussies... they’re big babies... so let’s just hope we’re handling this with an abundance of caution and he’ll be good to go in 2 weeks

After I have had some time to chill I find it humerous they hit 22 3s and still lost

that squad of hideous circus freaks has no business being mentioned in the same breath as last years HYG’s, but can you imagine how tilted we’d have been last year if we hit 22 3’s and lost?

now imagine if we were a bubble team...
and lost a game that may have been impressive enough to make us a tourney team...
and that team was our biggest rival...

that’s a nutcrushing loss for the dozen or so basketball fans they have

I don't check that board postgame. I'm guessing someone called me out over my "we'll lose OT by 10" tweet. Don't care. I'm glad I was wrong.

as long as Sir Isaac is back in time for the tourney, then we're fine. And I think that's the worst possible scenario here

Reminds me of holding my breath literally every time Cammy Cam got tackled in 2010.

It is the closest I have ever come to saying a discouraging word about Bruce. I was in the arena and they were almost always in a 4 or 5 out set and they knew all the passes to keep getting open looks. I was dying. That being said, maybe this makes us better for the tourney or something or maybe if we aren't in the zone and they keep blowing by us for easy baskets we lose. I don't know, it felt frustrating for sure.

BTW, I don't know if all teams do this or not but the bama coaches would watch Bruce and wait for him to signal in the offense and then they would signal it to their players. They were doing a good job of defending our sets, but then we had guys make plays. Does everyone do this and this is the first time I've noticed?

Yeah the zone had me triggered. Not gonna lie. I still think he stayed in it too often and should have swapped to man more frequently to change it up, especially when we had Mac at the 5. Mostly I hope we learn that we can't play that poorly in zone if he calls for it and that we learn better decision making. We had TO's and we threw it into the last option in Mac when he missed both FTs. Mac has to be better but we don't need to throw him the ball there. Actually lucky he didn't turn it over probably. He's the last guy on the court at that time who should have gotten the ball. Also Jvon and Samir keep being amazing in OT and I keep wondering why they can't do those things in the last 5 minutes to keep us from having to go to OT. The offense was BROKE for a few minutes and I think we had more airballs than we did non-airballs in a stretch. It was killing me

Oats was well prepared and obviously targets this game as it matters to their fans and power brokers. He's had good approaches both times. We're gonna have to prepare for him special next time we see them.

In fairness, JG wrote off the program a few years ago and we’ve only enjoyed the best 3 year stretch in boog hoops history by far. Talk about a miss oof.

We’ve generally played pretty good D but I miss the TOs and run outs we forced last year. And a couple guys just have a knack for being out of position particularly in the zone.

I think the frustrating part of the zone was that when they overloaded one side it forced the guy on ball to chase to the corner, and then someone else was supposed to rotate to the ball. That is crazy difficult and they are too good at 3's for that strategy IMO. That being said, we won short-handed so I really shouldn't complain at all. Last night really showed how much Danjel is a key to our defense which I don't think any of us ever thought we would say.

we’re beating this zone horse to death, but I want to drop an elbow from the top rope and pile on as well

we played a ton of zone last year and it was destructive because Sweet Baby Jared of all people was a killer in the middle of it - and we just generally had more heady/sudden defenders surrounding him when we had Bryce and Malik and Horace and Chuma... those guys were more consistent and reliable, in better position, and in Malik’s case at least explosive and physical enough to contest from deep or knock the shit out of cutters and disrupt sets that way

we haven’t played much zone at all until the last month... I’m glad we’re working on it, but I’m not sure it’s salvageable for this season... we don’t have a guy to anchor it in the middle - well, Sir Isaac could but then we’d be even more ass on the wings than we already are... we just aren’t experienced enough playing together, don’t communicate well enough, don’t have the urgency to defend for a full 30 seconds, to really lock down in zone... young players just aren’t good defensively and we play way too many youngsters to be a good zone team

maybe BRUCE is willing to take the lumps now because he thinks the pieces are there... Devan and Al are plenty good enough to be disruptive zone wings, with Samir up top and Isaac or JVon in the middle - their heads are spinning right now though

and one final thing - if you’re playing a zone and the possession ends with Austin sprinting out to contest a 3 from the wing or top of the key 23 feet from the basket - you should be embarrassed... and that happened at least twice, if not more, last night... it’s beyond broken

So rewatching cause my entire house now has Flu A now.

We went zone at 11 minute mark while leading 23-14

They were confused for 1st possession

- Next possession wide open 3 made
- Another open made 3
- turnover off an offensive rebound
- turnover off an offensive rebound (both of these were Bolden penetration and he got swallowed by Wiley)
- missed open 3
- made 3

The biggest thing was when they figured out to stop penetrating all the way to the rim and to try to get into the zone to get open 3's. They stopped turning it over or taking tough shots and started finding way too many open looks. So at times we were getting the same problems we had with man in Game 1 even in zone.

But the bigger issue wasn't what we were playing, once they started really pushing the ball up after makes or misses we were just a scrambled mess. Often we never got set in the zone before they found a man. Even a possession or two where I see we tried to go man again we were lost because they pushed so fast and we were looking for the call and communicating. Essentially they did to us what we did to teams a year ago. You know you need to guard Bryce Brown but we'd push so fast that teams weren't ready yet and he'd pop up in an open spot and kill ya.
