*Jared Harper is that dude. He was up and down last year with some really incredible highs. I was very critical of him “disappearing” in games, occasionally getting out of control for stretches or seeming overly tentative at times when the lights were bright.

That boy is a gat damn killer on the court now who ain’t scared of nobody. It’s like watching a Nick Marshall-type dude lead our basketball team. I genuinely love this kid. And I’m so glad he’s only a junior.

*Wiley had a timid, slow start yesterday, like he was feeling his way and a little intimidated by the name of the opponent. Then something seemed to click (or somebody got on his ass and just told him to let it all go and play). The second half was a completely different player. The kid was far more assertive down low and on the glass and it seemed like HE was beginning to believe/realize that he belonged on that floor mixing it up with the nation’s best.

God help our future opponents if he builds on that and keeps improving his confidence. I don’t see a high draft pick with him this year but I DO see a kid that could return next year and give us 18/10 consistently. I’d be just fine with that.

*We needed Danjel out there if for no other reasons than to give us another long, athletic body who can knock down shots and absorb fouls for us. Having to play the entire 2nd half with 3-4 fouls on 90% of our most crucial defenders just isn’t ideal.

*Bryce is my boy and I love him, but he isn’t gonna create his own shot off the dribble against elite, long, athletic specimens like these guys last night and against others we will see in March. We’ve gotta work to get him open looks in the ball-screen game. Because when he gets a look, he’s gonna make 40%, regardless of how cold he may start the night.

*Samir just ain’t ready for this caliber of opponent, IMO. Hope he improves because we need him to.

*Ho Daddy and Mack ain’t scared of any god damn body. Contesting Zion’s dunk attempt when he already had a full head of steam gave me a humongous chub that still hasn’t fully recovered. May need to seek medical attention... it’s been much longer than 4 hours.

*Coaching is just a blessing to behold. Not just for drawn up sets, floor spacing, defensive adjustments or execution... but for MINDSET. Our kids played FEARLESS. They kept coming back from every opportunity they had to just fold. That is a confident coach who believes in his guys to not back down from anyone, and whose mentality has rubbed off on his team.

This is one of the biggest differences between an elite coach (BRUCE) and an amateurish HS one (gus).

Wiley came alive. Nothing better than seeing an athlete flip the switch and start playing with an anger or fire. First time I’ve seen him look that intense since being at AU and I am ready to see it continue
I think that was the single most important game in Wiley’s life, because he was an And-1 falling and a made free throw from dropping 20/10 on one of the best college basketball teams ever assembled.

He’s starting to realize he can be as good as his mentality and confidence will allow him to be.

Yep. My biggest gripe in watching him against Washington was he was playing so weak and timid. That all went away last night

it wasn’t just Washington... he was so slow, clunky, indecisive, and unathletic in the first half yesterday... I said at the time he was 24 minutes away from playing himself out of the draft, and had the worst 5 & 4 I’d ever seen

but he shoved all of it down my throat the second half... he’s always been a surpassingly good rim runner for a guy his size, and has been a dangerous roll man to take advantage of defensive mistakes... but he’s taken those skills up multiple notches... I like seeing him move on the perimeter - right now he’s more dangerous with the floor spread than he is catching it on the block... he’s going to crush teams once he works out the kinks in the post

my biggest takeaway is - we played at essentially our normal pace and held the “greatest team of all time” to 78 points

we’ve got 2 small guards, an undersized 3-5 in the starting lineup, and only 1 traditional big who plays 18-20 minutes a night... and we still held our own with the best offensive team we’ll face all seasons

BRUCE’s teams always score, but now we have the makings of a lockdown defensive squad

I was bummed last night - disappointed we blew some chances - but as time passes I’m even more impressed by a lot of what happened last night

I don't feel like we were the better team but I certainly felt we are not "that" far away from them. Now, they will improve so who knows how good they will be in March but we will too.
Just have to hope we don't open the games up cold like we have these last 2. I know every game we won't open on fire but it took a while for shots to fall. Too long imo. Hopefully we can figure out things quicker when that happens and with Wiley flipping the switch we have an outlet to turn to when we don't shoot well.

getting Austin in the starting lineup should help with the early game offense when shots aren’t falling

anecdotally it seemed Mac has been cold recently, but it’s worse than I realized

last year - 53% from the field, 39% from 3, 73% from the line

this year - 42 / 14 / 58

I think by conference play we’ll be starting

Jared - Bryce - Danjel - Chuma - Austin

with J’Von - Samir -Malik -Horace - Mac as a hellacious group of energy and defense off the bench

that’s 9 deep that not many teams in the country can match with J’Von just needing to tread water until he adjusts to the size and speed of D-1

I feel Mac has been pressing for some reason. Last year he never looked fazed and this year he seems to get more ..idk what the word is but that annoyed look I guess. It seems he’s trying to be better than last year but he’s trying so hard that it’s taken him out of his game some.

I've been impressed with his play and energy so far given his injury and look for him to improve as the season goes along. His shooting % may be down a bit, but his KenPom offensive rating is in line with last year, and his rebounding is actually up this year. Block and steal % down a bit, but not surprising given that he is coming back from a catastrophic leg injury. His final numbers will probably take a decent hit with Austin getting more minutes, but Mac will definitely play a huge part in this team's success this year.

Not really into moral victories but I think that it was pretty cool to have Jay Bilas gush over some of the hygs on prime time national tv while they played against the most hyped team in the country. He called Chuma a nba player and a pro like 4 or 5 times the past two games, and he gushed like a school girl over Jared’s baller status. Even in a loss, I feel like that type of stuff does wonders for legitimizing Boog hoops as a place kids can go to get to the nba

Not much left to say as the Greg overfloweth with ‘EA’.

Our D most definitely stood out. Can clean up a few things but we won’t score less than 80 much this year.

Can’t wait to get Danjel back in the mix and I’m still high on him playing some mins at the 4 if Chuma gets in foul trouble. Has the size and spaces the floor particularly if Austin is in.

Was such a dagger having to pull Chuma out of the lineup and as much as Ho daddy can lock up and get on the glass our O doesn’t work that great with him out there trying to launch 3s.

Boogs should be proud. You weren't at full strength, playing the greatest team ever assembled (lol), and were within striking distance. All while being completely hosed by the refs. Shots weren't falling, shot 30 less free throws, and still kept it a game.

Read through that stuff last night. They really hate duke and are generally very high on us. Most of them want no part of us.
Yeah, they know they won’t play Duke again this year and are gonna catch us on the chin twice.
