+++++ Boogs (HYGs) vs Missouri Official Game Thread +++++

Had a bad feeling about this one. Road trip and the first time playing without our NBA player. Not like we've been tearing it up in our W's either so our margin for error felt tiny.

As soon as they hit a few 3's our defense fell apart. We started over committing to being chest to chest with guys 25 ft out and just got absolutely torched.

They were 7-13 from 3. That's a great % but they took 46 less 3's than bama just took and 13 is a very low # for them and for most SEC teams.

What got us killed was them going 21-38 from 2 and just getting easy look after easy look and blowing by us off the bounce....many times after ball screens or when our defenders were treating the guards like they were Steph Curry about to shoot from 32'

That Mizzou club shouldn’t score more than 60 on any D with a pulse that’s the bottom line. Would be helpful if we made more than 1 3. I’m not that worried about it but that was a trash club we should beat most nights even without Sir Isaac.

I'm officially concerned about our defense. 10 days ago I was scratching my head at how our offensive rankings were ahead of our defensive ones and just figured it was wonky. I felt better about how we played defense than how we played offense and would have said I was pretty confident with that assessment. But we couldn't keep Ole Miss or Arky from driving on us. Our best defensive game was probably UK, which I guess makes me feel like we have it in us somewhere and just aren't executing agains others.

Then we decided that we weren't gonna let Kira drive and kill us again and played zone and did it without having a clue what we were doing at times. Today we seemed to again be incapable of keeping ourselves between the ball and the rim. We look like we've lost confidence and understanding on that end. And that should be our calling card, especially when Isaac is back. But it looks more like he's been a bandaid that kept us from being exposed right now and that we're really around 50th when he's out there and 250th when he's not.

indecision is killing us defensively... Flanny, Jamal, Devan either try to feint and recover, or just wander into no mans land... Samir and JVon do it too, but not as often and their issue isn’t positioning as much as it is awareness... I think they’re “resting” for lack of a better word anytime they’re defending off ball... the do a lot of work offensively and guard really hard when they’re man up, but they’ve been shit as help defenders for a month now... I’ve lost count of the number of passes that have whizzed right by a flat-footed Samir or JVon to an open catch and shoot 3... they’re not out of position, they just don’t react

I really think it’s just a snowballing combo of a lot of little things... this is a dangerous mindset because you can’t always just flip a switch, but I’m not gonna be worried unless it’s still happening in March

if we’re still lost defensively in that aTm game at home on 3/4 and at UT on 3/7, I’ll be concerned... until then I’m not getting too high or low about anything

I expect this squad to play well in March

sometimes your coaches are telling you what you are doing wrong but the W's make you believe you don't really need to change. Maybe dropping that L will force them to up their defensive effort and intensity. I do think we have to figure some things out on the chalkboard too. The ball screens are a mess and we seem very confused by some rotations.

I won't be freaking out until we're still having issues after Sir Isaac is back. I hope we pick it up this week even if he has to sit another game or two, but if we don't it's not the end of the season. I thought we were getting better offensively with Isaac getting more aggressive off the bounce, hitting a better % from 3 and Wiley being in control and dominating around the rim without needing a lot of post touches while Samir and JVon were doing better at finding some buckets. I think for this team the offense should be harder to fix/upgrade than the defense. So lets get Okoro back and get our act together in time for the end of the season and the tourneys.

That game sucked balls and we have several guys who I wouldn’t be upset if they weren’t with the boogs next season.

If we can beat UGA on the road, I like our chances in the next two. Of course I don’t know who can D UP, Edwards with Sir Isaac out, but I’m still positive about this squad looking at our 2019 results at the same time last year. I hate to lose more than anyone, but anything is possible with BRUCE at the wheel. Everyone here would have been tickled pink with making the Dance this year & MAYBE making the Thrilling Thirty Two. Not gonna go negative on my boys. Today we had the most objectives to overcome since the Persons fiasco & I still believed until under five. Just my thoughts on our FAM team.

Ant has been shit since 3 min left in the Bama game.

His start might’ve been the difference in us winning and losing that game. Not trying to be too argumentative but we just struggle on the road We aren’t done losing. We’ll be fine though. We need an easy 5/12 matchup if there is such a thing. That’s my guess as to where we end up.

Samir/JVon/Wiley/Danjel - 33 shots for 66 points

The non Ant seniors were very efficient. Ant and the young guys were hot garbage
My biggest issue is with the freshman and Jamal. AF and DC have had an entire offseason and 25 games under their belt now, and both leave a lot to be desired. If Cambridge isn’t shooting lights out from three, he’s not doing much of anything. Flanigan is the worst offensive player I’ve seen in our 7-8 man rotation at AU in Bruce’s tenure. Jamal is in year three in college basketball and cannot defend, cannot dribble, and cannot create a shot for himself. If he’s not standing in a corner getting an outlet pass he’s useless. Those three guys are going to be centerpieces of the roster next season and that shit makes me nervous.

I agree on that but he has melted in clutch situations throughout his career.

I wasn’t expecting anything from Flanigan this year and was surprised when he started getting minutes. But I am shocked at how awful his form is shooting. His dad was a for er player and now coach. His granddad is a legendary coach in Arkansas. I have seen kids that know nothing about the game pick up a ball and have better form. It’s real bad.

The Kobe Brown child from Huntsville 10/9 2A 1BL pretty decent stat line for a FR deemed not boog caliber. Could have easily signed him if we wanted. Not saying we should have he’s not that good but it brings me to the other thought I’ve been marinating on which is Danjel is quite probably the most disappointing boog athlete ever. Jeremy Johnson was the only comp that came to mind.

Apologies as I’ve broken my no comment policy on Danjel but I just can’t comprehend how he’s so bad.

Still can’t believe Bruce said he was the most NBA ready player on the squad a couple years ago. Or something to that effect. Either he was lying to try to motivate, or he was just as wrong as he could be

I don’t think he was lying. I think something broke Danjel. Maybe having to sit out another year and a half. Freshman Danjel was better than current Danjel.

I don’t think he was ever suppose to be a 4. I feel like he’s playing 30 pounds over the weight he should be. He was so good at taking the ball to the hole and drawing fouls his freshman year, and then after the suspension that all just stopped.

He just doesn't have whatever "it" thing that makes it all work. All the physical tools. Not sure if he just lacks the intensity or focus, if he works hard but not hard enough....I have no idea. But he's missing whatever the intangibles are that take someone with talent and makes them better than the other guys with the same talent. He's just a bland, run of the mill 6'7" guy that is a borderline, forgettable starter. He popped during the tourney last year when we needed him and I'll forever remember that but now it feels like that was just a guy fitting in on a magical run and playing above his head for a few games. Cause he's been a lot of nothing in his final season. His best scoring games against terrible teams like CSUN and Lipscomb. To me that says a lot at this point in his career that he needs inferior opponents to shine

Maybe he makes me eat these words later and I am bashing myself for being an idiot, but I've given up on expecting that from him. I don't even really have an ounce of hope left to be honest. He's gonna get us 7-12 points in SEC games and play some defense and get some rebounds but largely be someone you forget is on the court.

His handles weren't good enough and as soon as we started playing better teams and they had a little film on him he started getting ripped a lot and then stopped trying. He can't handle like a 3 so we played him as a 4 and hoped he'd be a great stretch 4. But his 3 pt % has gone from 37% to 35% to 31%. year by year. There's the killer to his college career IMO. He's got a beautiful shot. Should have been a guy that improved year over year. If he had he'd be one of the most lethal shooters in the league and a big problem at the 4 for everyone we play.

I think it’s as simple as he’s lazy. Some thought that was going to change when he had his baby in the off season, but he’s reverted back to his ways. His feet and athleticism are too weak.

He may very well be lazier than some other guys. But I don't think that's his biggest issue. He's clearly got some mental issues just like Jeremy Johnson did. He shies away from big moments, and when he tries to step into (and fails) it sets him back even further. The way he acts and acted on social media was very JJ like. Always wanting attention and adulation as if that was gonna be the source of his confidence. But it never works that way.

I don’t have any first hand knowledge of it, but I would doubt that he has the work ethic of Bryce Brown. I think he needed to have that kind of drive to take his shot to the next level, but just doesn’t seem like he’s as motivated as Bryce was.

but I think your point may be his biggest problem, just struggles with the mental strength required to play at a high level in this league. Always seeking validation from outside sources

Didn't get to watch the game as intently as I usually do and haven't read the whole thread. Few things:

1) What did Cambridge do that has folks all riled up?

2) I hate Auburn fans. I'm seeing people say this team blows, mediocre, etc. Has me completely rustled. It's usually the fans that support Gus so whenever the basketball team loses they come and rag them. @SonofSeaborn you know what I'm talking about

3) Obviously have to have young Isaac to make any sort of run. On to the next one. let's fug up the dawgs

What I saw on Cambridge looked like a hook and hold. They both went down, then when DC got up he supposedly stepped on the Missouri players lower leg I think? While he was still on the ground complaining about the call.

the step that got him kicked out was definitely intentional. I don't think we would have won anyway, but the whole call (the hook and hold and the flagrant 2 step) definitely changed the momentum of the game. Boogs were coming back and that kind of deflated everything
100%. I felt like we were gonna win until this happened. Thought we were bound to make a run at some point but that resulted in a 7 point swing. 4 free throws and then hit a three on the possession if I remember right.

Cambridge got pulled down on a box out. He got up first and stepped over the player, but stepped on his shin. Refs says it was on purpose and they did a review on the play. Overturned the foul call on Missouri and popped Cambridge with a hook and hold technical and flagrant 2 for stepping on the player. It was way overblown and ended our comeback and all momentum.

I don’t know if was intentional or not, but he barely put weight on the Mizzou player. If he really wanted to hurt the guy, he did a terrible job of it.
