**** Boogs v Duke ( Maui Semifinals) ****

it’s not the shooting fouls that killed us... it’s the gray area, freedom of movement, touch foul bullshit... we body them - foul... they body us - let em play

those add up, they stop runs, and they extend leads... and they have very little to do with style of play... our guards pressure the defense every bit as much as theirs did - but were officiated differently 20-40 feet from the basket... the calls in the paint were even

I get what you're saying, I just don't feel like we put pressure on defenses or refs when we have the ball. Too many posessions where we shoot fading/off balance 25 footers. Refs adjust their whistles to that. Human natures. And if we think we're going to make an Elite 8 or Final Four run, we better handle D's bodying us up and we better make the refs give us some calls. We've got to step our game up. We played poorly and we lost by six to the best team in the country. I just hope Bruce tells them they sucked and have to play better instead of worrying about the calls.

I've really hated the guy since like 2015. Seriously. He's an ass, and an ACC homer
I’ve never really had a problem with him. He’s a smug ass and doesn’t shy away from it. Even tries, somewhat, to play it straight when Duke is playing. He just spent the second half apologizing for the refs and saying Auburn is a really good team. Two years ago it would be laughable to him, and just about anybody else, that Auburn would field a team competitive with Duke.

Laughable to most people

Give or take 50 minutes of play time in Hawaii as a starter, Samir has scored 2 points and grabbed six boards. He’s not exactly a lockdown defender either..

Yes, he has his moments. I think my dislike for him stems from my belief that he used to be soooo good at it. He later just toed the party line and sold out. Defending UNC fake classes stuff, things like that. And the smartest guy in the room routine gets old. Too much like my boss at work.

Samir will be fine. Basically 3rd and 4th games he’s played in 2 years coming off a bum ankle. We saw what he can do first couple games. We all thought that would be Danjel’s spot and it still might be.

on Bilas... I thought he was fine tonight... not overly homerish - but nothing insightful at all either

he’s just lazy - same as almost every other announcer... he comes into the game with a few predetermined thoughts and just bends whatever is happening on the court to fit that predetermined narrative

My problem with him tonight is he didn't seem to learn from any of his terrible shots. Just kept making them over and over. His D was ass too. I know he will be fine but it was fvcking frustrating tonight.

I guessing he’s not quite as good as he looked early and not nearly as bad as he’s looked in Hawaii... he’s definitely opened the door for Danjel to take his spot the last 2 games though

This is what we all do every single day to varying degrees. It’s impossble to not be biased. At least he tries to keep it in check. And for crying out loud, his name has bias in it.

Give us DP tonight instead of Samir and we win the game. Just think what his size and shooting ability would have done for us. Just a decent shooting game from him puts us over the top and his size on D would have helped a ton.

Honestly give us his 5 fouls and we may win. When we get hosed like we have the last two games with foul calls we can’t play the way Bruce wants too. The guys end up having to be more timid.

This is me. Biggest thing Danjel gives us is competition. It will make Samir better. It will make Danjel better.

Agreed. Sucks to lose, but damn I have never been more encouraged after a loss. Really hope we don't have any hangover from this tomorrow. Would love to see us come out and have our first hot shooting game of the tourney. My expectation was always beat Xavier, play Duke tough, and then win the 3rd place game. Just have to finish that tomorrow.

sorry y'all but i still don't understand why the Pearls kept with the perimeter jump shots as the primary strategy last night. It was semi Gussy like when he wants to run it up the gut on 1st, every 1st.
No doubt we have a team of shooters, but when the shots aren't falling we need to be able to switch it up and use our athleticism to challenge in the paint and create other opportunities.

The thing about Duke is that their intensity rarely wanes and they have an amazing combo of length and freak athleticism and lights out shooting. (they remind me of our boogs in many ways only they are more complete) Zion alone made some insane plays that exhibited body control that folks his size aren't allowed to have. Anywho, try to figure out if the stage was too big, strategy or just bad luck was the culprit.

aight, i'm done.

Austin had 17 pts and their center wound up with like 8 blocks or something. I think there was an effort to get it inside but it just wasn’t working sometimes

I think part of it is that at times we moved the ball well and got open looks. We have to take those. It's who we are. If they don't fall, they don't fall. The other part is that sometimes we settled for bad shots, we have to attack the paint some and if nothing else draw contact. The problem is that really tall teams can defend Jared and Bryce by letting them drive and then just blocking the shot. Samir was supposed to be the guy who could slash for us, hopefully he still can be. Also hoping Danjel has become more aggressive and can also be a slasher. CHUMA has to become more aggressive as well, especially in scenarios like last night when shots aren't falling.

We are not big enough. You practice to your identity. You can’t flip a switch and all of sudden be something you’re not. It doesn’t work that way. When we went inside they’re length was to much for anyone outside of Wiley and maybe Chuma. Mac and Horace aren’t good enough offensively in the low post to make moves against the caliber of big man that Duke puts on the floor. That’s how they got 11 blocks. Sometimes the shots aren’t going to fall and that’s
Ok, because we won’t be playing Duke every night.

Did you see what happened when we drove inside? Our shit was getting swatted left and right and the refs weren't calling any fouls. Only guy we had who could get a shot up inside was Austin. Chuma had one nice post move and I would have liked to see him get a few more chances. His scoring on the low block thus far has been a very nice addition.

Overall, I don't think the stage was too big for us last night. Duke is just really good and we were cold at the begining of the game. We missed a ton of open looks. As good of a shooting team as we are, you can't fault Bruce for thinking the shots would eventually fall and they did more frequently as the game went on. Prior to Bryce getting hurt last year, we were shooting 38% on the season as a team. Do that last night and we probably win the game.

A stat the UK fans have been referencing a lot on rupp's rafters is that we outscored duke by 11 over the last 26:44. Moral victories suck, but that's damned impressive.

Biggest practical takeaway is that NET which replaced RPI for tournament selection purposes takes into account wins and losses by less or greater than 10 points. A 6 point loss to Duke who will probably finish with 2 or fewer losses is going to be a huge boost there.
