**** Boogs v Duke ( Maui Semifinals) ****

There are multiple threads on Rupp's Rafters predicting we pull the upset tomorrow. Feels pretty damned good to have the fans of a blue blood (who was just brutally raped by Duke) talking up our chances to beat them.

Also, compared to the bunker, this place is like a DNC convention. Of course, so was Hitler's Germany, so...

I just heard Seth Greenberg say on the Gonzaga/Illinois halftime show that he thinks an uptempo game benefits Duke tomorrow night. I generally am on board with his analysis, and think he's one of the smarter guys they have on any sport, but it seems like uptempo and transisiton is what we're built for.

We are usually not a big turnover team, so we shouldn't be creating too many transistion buckets for them. Thoughts, gents?

I think the worry is that if the game is a track meet, their super stars, esp Zion, will be really tough to stop. Ideally, we need to shoot the ball really well which will allow us to set up our pressure D. If we miss a lot of 3s, they are going to get long boards and run.

Jared is going to have to hit those 30 footers he loves so much, so he can open up the lane. I think that might be the key to the game, unless somebody else steps up offensively. We're gonna have to play good D, and not get frustrated if shots aren't dropping. That, plus terrible officiating, almost sunk us today.

and samir needs to attack the paint and take it to the hoop. not sure what the issue was yesterday but he needs to be back on point today.

a few early morning thoughts:

1 - Duke’s bigs can’t guard Jared on switches, and that includes Zion... he picked up 2 quick fouls yesterday because he was body’ing guys as they turned the corner on him... and their centers were giving a LOT of room and we know Jared will pull the trigger from anywhere with enough daylight

we can’t guard Zion, but if Jones can’t lock down Jared or we do a good enough job forcing switches, he’s a mismatch for them as well

2 - the pace we play depends almost entirely on how well we shoot the ball... running for early shots is fine if we’re making them... it sounds remedial - but especially in this game: we make shots we can win, if we miss shots, especially in transition, we’ll get run out of the fvcking gym

3 - Jared, Bryce, Samir ball pressure... they’re big enough to shoot over the top of us, but we have to contest and make them as uncomfortable as possible getting into their offense and see if they’re patient enough to work for good shots or if they settle once they feel some resistance... we can’t allow them to run set after set and make extra passes to eventually find a wide open chalky spotting up because the studs drew all the attention... it’s easy to be unselfish and make the extra pass when you’re beating the shit out of teams and having a great time... how do you react when the game is close and 4 guys are used to being “the man”... it’s a blessing to have that many studs, but have they settled on a hierarchy or will they need to lose or struggle a couple of times for it to fal into place?

so make shots early, ball pressure on Jones and Barret, make their bigs defend on the perimeter, and see how they handle things late in a close game

it sounds simple enough, but it all starts with making shots early... do that and we’ve got a chance... don’t and get your face beat in

I like our chances more than anyone else I’ve seen so far

Yeah I don’t think we’re gonna try to slow the game down or anything. Maybe we mix up the D and back off the full court pressure.

Would be nice to make some shots and stay out of foul trouble. I mean they are great but we’re by far the most athletic team they’ve seen too. I see no reason they’re just gonna be able to get out in transition and put on a dunk show.

Please remember Boogs, properly prepare your buttholes for the prison sex the refs are going to perform on you, today. Think Andy Dufresne, multiplied by 100000000000. All of the bad calls your program has gotten throughout history will pale in comparison.

so Vegas is saying 84-76? I don’t see it...

if we play well enough to keep it a single digit game it’s gonna be because we shot well enough to score in the mid-upper 80’s, in which case the over will be obliterated...

or the 160 total is right, but because Duke rolls us 89-71 style

I just don’t see this game being played in the upper 70s/low 80s... but I don’t know shit

KenPom’s computers say

Duke 82
Boogs 76

computer nerds and Vegas goombah’s alike both like something in the upper 70’s/low 80’s

but really, what the fvck do they know?

gang... I’m going too far - but the more numbers I crunch the better I feel about our chances

Duke hasn’t played a team even in the same stratosphere as our Boogs... Kentucky is talented, but they’re not going to pressure Duke the way we did - and I don’t mean like full court press... I just mean the way we stress teams simply due to our style of play- the closest comparison so far is Army, and I mean, come on... I’m sure the cadets have a nice little squad of tryhards, but they’re not HYG

Duke hasn’t faced a team that shoots as many 3’s as we do... gets to the line as much as we do... turns you over the way we do... and can defend the paint as well as we can

their opponents have shot 21.75 3’s a game - we shoot 34.25... that’s a HUGE difference, especially if we get a couple of solid stretches of Boogin’... for comparison they shoot 27.75 3’s a game

their opponents have gotten to the line 18.75 times a game - we avg 23.25 fta/game

Duke avg’s 9.75 steals and 6.75 blocks a game, which allows them to get out in transition... while only allowing 5.5 steals and 3.5 blocks a game which limits their opponents chances to run

what do you know, Boogs avg 10.25 steals and 6.5 blocks a game... while allowing 5.25 steals and 3.25 blocks

all in all, Duke avg’s 10.5 to’s and forces 14.25... Boogs avg 11.75 to’s and force 20

Boogs are getting more loose ball chances to get out and run than Duke

I guess there’s a chance all of those squads have admitted defeat before the game even started and haven’t tried to “beat Duke at their own game”... but they haven’t played anyone capable of even threatening them at their game the way we can... let us Boog early and turn them over a few times and see how that whole “their game” thing works out for everyone

I like your optimism but they beat every team so far by 20. We are going to have to play exceptionally well.

definitely... I don’t “expect” to win... and if we shoot poorly we’ll get debacled

but it’s not going to take a 1980 USA Olympic Hockey performance to win either... we don’t have to shoot off the charts - we just have to shoot it well... do that, and our baseline performance in other areas and style of play is good enough to win

Duke -10.5 is still the smart bet... but they better not let us Boog early is all I’m saying
