*****BOOGS vs BAMS - SHARIFE DEBUT*****

Gaddammit shoulda had this one but whatev Sharife era has begun and we can start building towards our 40-0 natty run next year.

aTm loss bothered me way more than this one... need to start picking up some dubs and get it rolling in February to lead into the summer and next fall, but today was the first day of the season

What kinda squad is this gonna be when Boogie gets back

defense is still gonna be bad - we’re starting from scratch, in the middle of the season, against teams that have been playing together for much longer

young teams defend like trash... teams inexperienced playing together defend like trash... we’re gonna give up a ton of points and make a ton of mental mistakes

but we’re going to bedowngrade teams offensively, and one night the defense is going to take a leap and the delittling will be on in full effect... it may be 6 games from now, it may be 10, but when it happens you’ll know

Boogie probably an upgrade on D from Devan and Jamal too. D gonna still be trash but ideally we start clicking to the point we don’t even have to concern ourselves with such nonsense.

Should have won today and expect to win most of the rest if we’re at full strength. Maybe finish 9-9 SEC.

Never understood why people wanted sharif to play knowing he probably goes straight to the league and next year is our year

1. He wouldn’t ever play if he wasn’t cleared by the NCAA, which was a possibility. If he wasn’t cleared, he might have gone overseas.

2. I think most of us hoped he would need 2 or more years, which at his height is not a crazy thought at all.

He could still come back, but the NBA looked more possible after today.

Basketball savant I am , I worried about our ability to score consistently. Didn’t think about 18-19 year old guys not wanting to play D!!🤣

Someoen tell me if I'm wrong because I was just trying to do some research, but besides Trae Young, it's been long time since someone of Sharife's size was drafted very high. IDK. Trying to convince myself that we get another year out of him, but who knows. Cuz even Trae had to average 27 and 8 t to start getting real lottery buzz. Plus his 3 range was ridiculous.

guess I'm glad hes here but sad we won't get to see him in an auburn uniform in the tourney...thats all

That Carson Edwards kid went beginning of the 2nd rd a couple years ago best I can think of recently. Sharife is definitely in the mold of a Chris Paul, Steph Curry, Trae Young though.

I mean it’s one game ima need to see a little more but I just don’t think he’s gonna get serious top half of the 1st rd consideration in this draft. Which hopefully will be enough reason for him to come back, play on the top team in the land, in front of a packed Clam and then go in the lotto as a Soph.

yeah. I was gonna bring edwards. He and Tremont Waters were the past 2 star small PGs (besides Young) that really had acclaim but didn't get much draft attention. IDK. Young was crazy from 3 like beyond Jared Harper ridiculous and I'm just guessing that'd be what it takes to get sharife high up there. Because if he's gonna be a liability on Defense in the nba, he better be a 3 ball hero and I don't see that yet. So who knows. Just trting to talk myself into him staying is all. Welcome to MITS HYG therapy

Steph is sneaky tall - he’s 6’3”, with a 6’3.5” wingspan, he’s just so skinny people think he’s smaller than he is... even at his height he’s a defensive liability because he’s so light, which will always be an even bigger problem for Sharife

Trae Young is a better comparison, but Sharife doesn’t have his range/shooting

Sharife may get drafted in the 20s/30s after this season, but you literally double your first contract if you can move from pick 25 to pick 10... even moving from pick 15 to pick 7 is a $10,000,000 difference... Trae Young went 5th, and I don’t think Sharife will ever go that high, but he could still potentially make an extra $10-20 million if staying an extra year would improve his draft stock into the lottery

maybe a team in the lottery is willing to take the chance this year, in which case he should go... but despite how people love to shit on the NBA never playing defense, Sharife is galaxies and galaxies away from being ready to step on an NBA court right now

Young also had the benefit of a NCAA tourney and a year long media surge that helped him immensly.. SC doesn’t have that right now and won’t get the tourney talk. This comment and a pocket full of change will get you a cup of coffee at Waffle House or some shit....if this kid was in a hurry to get to the league, he would be playing pro ball overseas today IMHO. His folks are well off so he doesn’t need to take care of anybody. He should absolutely wait til next year when he can play a full season and when he has an equal talent on the floor with him all year and raise his own stock.

Agree with my fellow Greggers as ridic as Sharife is he has some physical limitations beyond just being a bit short at this point. The J does need some work. Though I suspect he’ll start making it rain in short order even with the no lift slow release.

The ESPN big board was updated 3 days ago and has Sharife as the 11th best PG prospect (48 overall). Will be interesting to see where he’s at on the next update with some games under his belt. Looking at the rankings only shorter PG is Tre Mann 6’1 at 23 overall. I presume he’s not as good as Sharife. Haven’t seen him but his stats are decent and he’s still got size on Sharife who they have 5’10.

Boogie P #15 PG prospect fwiw.

of note, that prospect rating thing doesn't even have sweet Flanny listed on there. Which is bananas

Yeah I don’t know how they determine whether or not to rank a guy in a certain class but they do have him going first rd in their 22 mock. Would think that would make him ranked somewhere in this class.

this mock was updated yesteraday and has as the 1st pick in rd 2. Plus has flanny in rd2 as well. Also lists tre mann at 6-5 where espn has him at 6-1. Not that it matters but it appears espn has that one wrong.

video already has 9k views. Sharife is such a star

IMO the guy Sharife helps the most on this roster is Cambridge. DCam seems like an energy guy, and when he's hyped up, we get the best from him. Sharife and his lobs to Dev are the kinds of plays that will keep Dev playing hard and staying engaged on both ends. Sharife certainly helps others like Johnson and Powell and Williams with his ability to draw help and kick out passes for quality looks from 3, but I think him getting easy highlight plays for Cambridge is going to do a bunch to get the best out of him.

The guy who stood out to me was Thor, but this is solid logic too.

Agreed and to a certain extent, Thor. Now, I am not saying Thor and Cambridge are anywhere close skill wise (because they arent, one will be a 1st rounder in 2 years), but as of this moment Thor is one of those "somewhat" timid guys once the game starts much like Chuma was originally. But, once Thor gets a lob his whole game changes for the better. It just wakes him up...

Oh, I think several guys are really going to benefit from Sharife playing, Thor definitely being one. Hell, look what he did for Cardwell on a couple of the pick-and-rolls. But relative to what we're currently getting compared to what we could potentially get, I think Sharife will almost max out DCam and make a more productive part of the team. I also think it keeps him from just camping out on the 3PT line and gets him more active and cutting on the offensive end.

I understand the D Cam argument. But he's actually the guy who's gonna be relegated to the bench so it won't be shocking to see his numbers actually go down. But I agree that he's a total energy/confidence player and getting those lobs will definitely get him and team going and keep him motivated as the 6th man.

Here's to hoping Justin Powell and Sharife develop a kind of telekinetic communication that Bryce and Jarod had. Bryce sprinting to his spot whenever there was a turnover and Harper knowing exactly where he'd be led to so many fast break 3s.

that reminds me of something I started to say at a few points in the game but got sidetracked

the changes in aggressiveness with Devan and Dylan were readily apparent, which makes sense because they are the 2 guys with the most experience playing with Sharife... it will take the others some time to adjust and be on the same page, but those 2 were getting easy looks consistently just knowing how to move and where to be as Sharife was doing his thing

the other thing that is noticeable is - and anyone who has played a lot will understand how important it is and how much better you play when you know you’ve got the best guy on the court... CAM or Johnny Football or just a stud QB in general can have a similar effect, or an ace pitcher in baseball, but neither has the effect it has in basketball... our guys will play looser, and more comfortably, and with more swagger, just by having Sharife on the court... he’s so good it relaxes everyone because they don’t feel the pressure to make plays or fear screw ups or any of that shit

it’s not just that he’ll get people easier looks, but they will shoot better just because Sharife is eligible... give a guy the exact same shots against the exact same defenses in the exact same game situations and he will make more with Sharife playing than he will without him

I don't really think he will lose minutes. I think we'll move him to the 3 more to give AF more breathers. Between AF and DCam at the 3 and JJ, Powell, and DCam at the 2, I think there's plenty of minutes to go around. And he's going to have a game or two where he's red hot and gets more run than others. I just think SC will bring out the best in him when he's on the court, which I think will be a big help because currently we're getting the least production from him out of the regular rotation guys.

Devan also took fewer 3s against Bama than any other game besides UCF. I think Sharife gets him working towards the basket more and being more aggressive in that way instead of spotting up all game long. He's too athletic to hang out on the 3PT line like a rec league all-star.

Ferk already up to 25 on the board. Kemba a good comp.

Sharife Cooper | 6-1 | PG | Auburn | No. 25
Questions about his NCAA status delayed Cooper's debut for six weeks and caused him to miss 11 games, but he proved worth the wait for Auburn fans. Despite being held out of 72 days of practice starting in mid-October and seeing his first action against a Top 25 team in Alabama, Cooper burst out of the gates with 26 points, 9 assists and 3 steals in a narrow loss.

His ability to get anywhere he wanted on the floor forced Alabama to use several defenders and defensive schemes to try and slow him down, mostly unsuccessfully. Cooper demonstrated a tight, shifty handle, the ability to change speeds dynamically out of hesitation moves, and outstanding vision delivering passes with both hands to either side of the floor, He already looks like one of the most creative guards in the college game operating out of pick-and-roll.

When he wasn't dishing on the move or passing ahead in transition, Cooper did a nice job of attacking the rim with purpose. His sheer quickness and excellent ball-handling ability helped him get to the free throw line 10 times in 33 minutes -- where he knocked down all but one attempt -- and he made several difficult layups in traffic from awkward angles.

Moving forward, scouts will want to learn more about Cooper's jump shot, an area he's been inconsistent with throughout his career. He made just one of his seven attempts from beyond the arc in his debut, sporting somewhat slow mechanics with a low release that may prove difficult for him to get off at his size. It's difficult to be a small, thin guard in today's NBA without a consistent pull-up jumper, so it will be telling to see how much success he can find in this area over the final 15 games of the season.

Cooper's defense is another question mark. With his thin frame, lack of length and average size, he's going to be at a disadvantage in this area and could improve his effort and technique based on what he's shown thus far. His quick feet and excellent anticipation skills suggest he has room to improve with a less casual approach fighting over screens and getting in a stance off the ball.

Auburn's scheduled matchups against the likes of Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri and Baylor the next few weeks just got a lot more interesting for NBA scouts, and the star power Cooper offers every time he steps on the floor is certainly a positive for the college game. Can Cooper make a Kemba Walker-style leap up draft boards in the next two months? --

From Bruce's presser. This is what we're talking about, especially with Dev.

** Wants more of his guys to back cut with Sharife to help with rebounds, not just for dunks. UGA does a good job with that. A lot of AU guys spot up for 3's.

If he figures out a jump shot like Kemba, he gone. Kemba could be lethal from 3. Sharife reminds me in skillset of rich man's version of JJ Barea. Just the way he navigates traffic and handles the ball as a smaller guard. I think he's more physically gifted than Barea, but I think the similarities are there.

that article says he's 6-1 too and there's no way Cooper is that tall. He's 5-11 at best. Probably more like 5-10.
