Didn’t play much and didn’t score. Fourth year in the program and it’s amazing how clueless he looks on offenseHow much did Danjel play? Did he look any less hapless?
I agree with you on the creating thing. That’s not his game. He’s the guy you want getting the open looks others create.
I love the off ball movement with a great spot shooter but that doesn’t seem to be our thing. I would like to see us change it up if teams are face-guarding him and have him set screens for Harper instead of it always being the 1-5 pick n roll.

Our "style" always needs to be winning, you gotta go with what works and what the other team gives you. W's make everything better...just ask the hut hutsI think Bruce wants to make sure we don't get too far away from our style. Austin is a great security blanket, and the more teams are successful in slowing us down the more touches he should get. Austin will basically score at will against teams without great post defenders (like today and even against some teams like NC State), but we will see more of those once we get into SEC play. The reason everyone has gotten away from the traditional bigs and throwing the ball inside as much as possible is that statistically it isn't a great shot when you have a capable defender on the other side. I don't think Bruce can get too far away from who we are, because Austin scoring 25+ isn't going to be enough if the rest of the offense goes cold.
We had a lot of spot up threes made and missed during the Murray State game due to ball movement. Im not sure I understand what you are talking about.
Good points. On the slow down offense, I agree that the run the clock down to 5 and take a contested shot approach is not effective. I think that Wiley should be our primary weapon to salt away games when we have a lead late. Run the clock to 15 seconds and then get the feed into him. That gives him time to either get his shot or kick it. That runs off 20+ seconds and gets us a high percentage scoring chance.Things I learned today that I think this team needs to do to improve:
- Wiley has to be a focal point in the offense. Really the interior pass in general needs to be a focal point. Until defenses adjust to take Wiley out of the game, we need to keep destroying them inside. And when defenses adjust, Wiley need to be able to make some passes to open shooters.
- Bryce needs more designed plays to get him catch-and-shoot opportunities, and he needs to stop dribbling the ball. If he doesn’t have an angle with his first dribble or can’t get his guy off the ground with a pump fake and dribble around him, Bryce needs to pass it back to the top. He’s not a shake down ball handler and needs to stop trying to prove he is. We need to work him into the gameplan with some designed shot plays and he needs to look for the kickouts. That’s his game. Nothing more, nothing less. He can be an elite guard for us if he plays his game.
- I think Mac is better coming off the bench. Like Ho Daddy, I think Mac’s energy and work rate are what have set him apart from others in the past. Plus he’s more polished offensively than Ho. Just gotta get that effort out of him every time he steps on the floor. That’s what he brought last year, and we haven’t seen that a bunch this year.
- Samir needs to be that guy more often. Him hitting a couple 3s helped make his shot fake really effective and that allowed him to get into the paint, where I think he saw most effective.
- Maybe I’m wrong, but Purifoy isn’t close. We saw some flashes from Wiley even when he looked really rusty early in the season. He looks really good now. IMO we haven’t seen anything like that from Purifoy. I realize his minutes have been limited because of the games he’s been back for, but even in those limited minutes, he’s done almost nothing good or noteworthy (he had the and-1 against UAB) on either end, and he’s had some noteable mishaps on defense. I’d really like to see him get a lot of time next Saturday, and I hope Bruce can find four guys to put around him that will give him the best chance to get acclimated.
- Bruce needs to shelve the slow down, run-out-the-clock offense late in games. It’s our biggest weakness as a team. It takes us out of our rhythm and flow. And most times it gives up the momentum we have.
Overall, I thought today was a good performance. Morant caused us some problems by getting into the lane, and multiple times in the scramble for loose balls or rebounds our defense got out of sorts and led to some second chance points for them. And several times they roasted us in transition. But we shot 8-17 from 3 in the second half, Wiley was dominant and we were more focused on feeding him the ball, and we got contributions from everyone. Good win. Now, one more tune up before SEC play.
You guys beat a tourney team, last night. Murray is good. Morant is a lotto pick. I'd say great win. But, you've got to get a reliable scorer to compliment Brown. As Brown goes, boogs go.Bruce really hits the nail on the head there at the end on why he doesn't recruit big, traditional, post guys. Decent post game review, and Bruce is usually pretty damn honest about opponents. You can tell he really thinks Murray St is a very high quality team.
i'd argue as "Jared goes the boogs go"...still think it has more to do about adapting to what is given to them vs always trying to maintain the same identityYou guys beat a tourney team, last night. I’m specifically talking about Bryce in our half court offense. Not in transition or off the secondary break. I’m fine with him spending some time standing on the wing or corner if we are running PnR action but want him moving on off ball screens or even being the screener more often.
We were better with ball movement last night. In fact our worst moments in that department were when Brown tries to be the creator and dribbles the ball too much as you’ve pointed out. I’m not trying to argue with you. I’m in like 95% agreement and just adding my thoughts.

Yep, that's why I said you've got to get consistent scoring from more players besides Brown.Brown is not a guy we can depend on. If he is on, awesome. But we need to be ready to win without him. Jared being ON is much more important.
When Jared is on, he can score 10 points and the offense will do great around him because he is not turning the ball over and setting up our other guys to score. We have so many guys who can drop 18-20 on any given night. The one guy who can do that with the most consistency is Wiley, imo. He is our most efficient scorer and the only thing that limits his scoring is our ability to get him the ball in the low post. Get Wiley 15 shots in the paint per night and we will be extremely hard to beat as a two to three of Brown, Okeke, Samir, Harper, or Dunbar on any given night will shoot well and chip in 15-18.Brown is not a guy we can depend on. Good points. The strength of our offense is the number of weapons who can hurt you and our ability to score in multiple ways this year. I definitely think we would benefit from getting both Austin and Chuma more paint looks. Austin is shooting such a high percentage down low and establishing him Chuma early in games would help free things up for our outside shooters. Bruce has got to get Bryce and Jared to buy into the paint first concept for it to work though. Bryce shot at around 40% from 3 for most of last year before he got hurt with tons of contested looks. If we can start getting him wide open looks on kicks from the post or drives, he can be even more deadly this year.Obviously we're going to shoot a lot of 3's but I'd like to see it reduced just slightly and see us use both Wiley and Chuma in the paint more. Both of those guys are so efficient below the FT line and they often have mismatches were guys just can't stop them consistently at all. I'm not talking about anything drastic, but if we're shooting 28 from deep lets get that down to 22 and add 6 more looks for those guys in/around the paint on average.
All that said, it simply may boil down to who is hitting and who isn't for us. If Bryce and Harper are both on you are getting beat, period. We've got too many other contributors that are going to chip in and when those 2 are both hitting shots you are getting beat. If one of the two are on and Wiley/Chuma/others play well we are still a Top15 team and hard to beat. We're really only in trouble on nights were both Jared and Brown aren't hitting jumpers. We look like an average team on those nights and need other guys to play above their heads when that happens or we lose games.
