Non Boog specific COLLEGE HOOPS thread

.....I don't fear that trip to Knoxville and I'm not sure that A&M isn't the tougher game for us now.

it

I fear all road games but I tend to agree that TA&M could end up being a tougher spot regardless of how Saturday goes. UK, win or lose, will be emotionally draining to an extent.

Maybe we get a Sr night bump vs the Aggies but that’s what UT will count on against us too.

skylar mays on another heater. Wish we had someone like him on our squad this year

The crazy thing is that Samir is averaging more PPG than him, but he is far more efficient and Samir doesn't really get hot the way he does. Samir just grinds out points somehow.

UT beats the Cats tonight. Not looking forward to Saturday to be honest.

Guys can we talk about Bama losing at home to Vandy. lol that’ll do it for their tourney hopes.

And UK clearly suffered from the ‘Auburn effect’. Too much of an emotional high to come down from after beating our boogs.

I'm not sure WTF UK was doing offensively late. I flipped over and it was obvious Quickley and Maxey were there best chance at getting buckets and they kept trying to run stuff for Hagans, who teams are now backing off and daring to shoot jumpers....and he's lacking confidence to the point he's running into traffic instead of taking that shot. They had multiple possessions under 2 minutes that were as craptastic as anything I've seen in a couple of seasons. They'd get the ball into their 2 playmakers hands and immediately run Richards out to 25 feet to take a pass...on what planet is that a good idea and WTF were they trying to run there? It was soooooo bad.

While fun to watch it was just a crappy night for the league again regarding National perception. Amazing to think we could finish win 29 wins and end up on the 4 line. I think we’d move to the 3 but there are no guarantees. We all know how hard it is to go on the road and win in this league but the parity is hurting us this year while it seems to lift some leagues.

the league had too many bad OOC loses and not enough good OOC wins. Even some of the wins hurt our ratings because they were "statistically poor" wins...AU had a few of those.

I can't figure the league out. If we matched up with the B10 1-14 I wonder how we'd perform. I don't feel like we'd lose that one by some terrible 10-4 margin. On the right day we might even win it 8-6.

Same for the NCAAT. I can see UK both making a big run or falling on their face in RD2. Same for AU, LSU and UF. We could have nobody at all by 2nd weekend or we could have 4 teams in the Sweet 16. I literally have no way to gauge how the conference will do.

Yeah their overall profile is much better than the SEC but off the top of my head we had some pretty good results. Mizzou beat Illinois. Ole Miss beat Penn St. Kentucky beat Mich St. also lost to Oh St. Prob had some losses I can’t think of but I’d expect to basically split 14 games in that scenario. I think they get a little too much credit based off some of the metrics. I mean fuggin Rutgers is in tourney consideration seriously?

if UK makes a deep run I’ll be shocked... if any SEC team is in the elite 8 I’ll be surprised, but UK was built in a lab to get bounced in round 1 or 2

I don't love any team in this league to make a big run in a normal NCAA season, but when I watch other leagues there are only a handful of teams that look much better than average. UK is ranked 6th and honestly I can't find many teams below them that are super impressive and that I'd think of as sure things to beat UK. I think SDSU is mostly overrated (good but not Top 10 good) and Baylor is gonna be a top 2 seed that likely plays nothing but close games so they can get knocked off pretty early if things fall wrong for them. There are a lot of Top 25 teams that are very mediocre IMO. Gonna be a very wild tourney

I admittedly haven’t watched them as closely, but Hagans is trash and Quickley is entirely dependent on getting the James Harden treatment... Richards has some Danjel in him where he just disappears and you go for minutes at a time without even realizing he’s on the court and poor EJ just isn’t good

Maxey is a stud - and is the only reliable guy I see on their entire roster... beyond that, I’d love to see them have to face a Northern Iowa type team in the second round and get bombed out of the gym... if they run across a team that can shoot the 3, their only hope of keeping up is getting to the line 30 times - and refs will swallow their whistles in March more than they will in a random January SEC game... UK can’t shoot well enough to keep up if some random chalkies hit 11 3’s against them, which happens to some team every year

that’s the story for every SEC team this year though... we’ve lamented the Boogs poor shooting, but we’ve still made the 3rd most 3’s in the league... we take too many, and shoot a poor percentage, but no one from the SEC makes enough 3’s or shoots a high enough percentage to win 3-4 straight tourney games... UK takes and makes the least of all of us though, which is why I think they’re especially ripe to get embarrassed

Interesting stuff going on at UK. Sounds like a riff between Cal and Hagans. Big thread on RR about it. Apparently, an "insider" called their radio show last night after the loss about this and "sources" confirmed its legitimacy.

as I said earlier, I haven’t watched as much UK as normal, but even though they won they just looked off Saturday... Hagans and Quickley just didn’t give me the warm and fuzzies - their body language was all over the place, way too emotional, and just not what I expect from guards on good teams

it’s hard to say exactly why, and pointless armchair psychology, but they’re both schizophrenic - especially Hagans... celebrating WAY too much, but in a way that seems disingenuous - likes he’s trying to convince himself... then falling apart when something goes wrong 60 seconds later... he’s a head case - so nothing will surprise me with him

I just think Hagans offensive game is broken. He'll flash a little for a 4 minute spell but then it's crap. He's not a shooter and he doesn't make great decisions with the ball. He also looks tired now, so even his great defensive skills are receding a bit and aren't as consistent.

I still think Quickley is fine. Been their most impactful player for a few weeks and if they had given him the ball more in the last 4 minutes of the UT game I think they win. Hagans was doing some weird stuff out there during that stretch.

Watching the Aztecs this afternoon. So Thankful we don’t start our tourney two weeks before the Big Dance begins.

pointless armchair psychology or not, my Spidey Senses did not steer me wrong this time... I hope he’s ok and it’s nothing too serious, but you don’t just skip a game in March and come back the next week like everything’s fine

Legit T or change the narrative in a loss T?
he thought he was ejected but since he got one t mouthing off and one for just being outside the coaching box then he gets to stay or something. He walked down the tunnel and everything but they called him back.

would love for UK to come back and win this and for LSU to beat UGA. that way we'd avoid LSU and UK in the tourney

Kind of funny that the narrative before the season from bama fans was "Avery wasn't getting the best out of his talent. Now Nate Oats is installing a system that suits these players." Now it has shifted to "Can't wait till Nate Oats gets in players that fit his system bc these players don't."

No idea if Oats is a good corch or not. But his recruiting so far leaves a lot to be desired if you're a bama fan. And you ain't gonna climb the sec ladder if you can't at least a few real studs. So, hopefully all their players jump into the draft and bama is left "rebuilding" again next season while the Boogs fly high

Im slightly concerned with Oats. He at least gets the important part about how basketball should be played. Plus they’re a Nike school, so Nike has to help them land some studs because it will look bad if the premier Under Armor school is drilling them every year.

yeah. Feel like he's a decent coach. I'm not convinced he's gonna be able to pull in top level talent to bama though. No southern connections and he's up against some great crooters in this league. But we'll see
