Auburn has signed five so far in its 2020 class, a group ranked No. 6 in the country, and although there is still one scholarship to fill it is becoming more and more apparent that the Tigers likely will use it in the 2021 class.
As I’ve mentioned several times, there aren’t any seniors on the 2020-21 roster, which means there are no scholarships to give in the 2021 class. Obviously, that would change if someone left the program/transfers, but until that happens, there aren’t any open scholarships from the roster.
That hasn’t slowed Auburn’s recruitment of 2021 guys. The Tigers already have dished out several offers. Auburn has the one scholarship from the 2020 class and if history is any indication, likely will have another one or two open by the end of school year.
With at least one scholarship and the potential of others opening up, Auburn has targeted several recruits in the 2021 class. Some, however, are higher priorities than others.
Here are five of the top targets and the latest on each.
Auburn’s 2021 target list starts with Smith. He’s No. 1 on the board and probably has been for a while now. Auburn assistant Ira Bowman is key here. Bowman has been recruiting Smith since before Smith’s sophomore season. The two have a strong bond. Smith also has been to Auburn several times and is very familiar with five-star point guard signee Sharife Cooper. LSU, where Smith’s father played, will be a factor, as will in-state Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina, which offered on Thursday. A lot can and likely will change in Smith’s recruitment, but I expect Auburn to be a mainstay.
If Smith is No. 1 on the board, Davison likely is No. 2. Both are local kids attracting national attention. Like Smith, Auburn has been recruiting Davison for several years. Also like Smith, Davison has visited Auburn several times (he lives a little more than an hour from campus). He also has very good relationships with all of Auburn’s coaches, especially assistant Wes Flanigan.
Poplar saw Samir Doughty leave Philadelphia for Auburn and have a lot of success while winning championships (Doughty actually attended the same school as Poplar at one time). Seeing Doughty succeed really opened the door for Auburn with Poplar. It also doesn’t hurt that Bowman has good relationships with Poplar and family.
Auburn went into Nevada and offered Collins and the offer was well received. Collins is very intrigued with Auburn and has developed a good relationship with Flanigan, who is the point man for Auburn in Collins’ recruitment. Collins hasn’t visited Auburn, but plans to as soon as possible. He’s very interested in the Tigers.
Bruce Pearl’s Wisconsin roots are key here. So is Steven Pearl, who is the lead recruiter. Both have developed a good relationship with Graham and have Auburn in the mix. Graham will be one to watch should he visit in the fall or spring
