Sad state of affairs when Boog Huthut Productions is posting videos of the eagle flight:

Majestic to be sure but a clear indication the program has no other source of pride at this point.

Need to train these birds to fly in the Clam. And do we even have a golden eagle that can fly anymore?

Flea’d from elsewhere but obvious it came from my handle namesake.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY: AN INSIDE LOOK AT AUBURN ATHLETICS

What is Auburn coach Gus Malzahn’s mindset going into the final five games of the 2018 season? Maybe not what some would expect.

We are told Malzahn doesn’t acknowledge there is anything to discuss about his job status. He still believes he has a team that can finish with a flourish. We are also told he has had no discussions about his future with athletics director Allen Greene or any other administrator.

What does that mean? Probably not much, other than Malzahn is doing what he should do and focusing on his team and the task at hand.

***

Malzahn has lost the support – if ever had it - of a significant number of people of influence. They want him gone, and nothing he does on the field down the stretch will change that. It’s safe to say Auburn president Steven Leath knows their feelings.

But it’s Leath that is the wild card. Trustees and others can tell him how they feel, but only Leath or Greene, with Leath’s blessing, can make a decision to change coaches. In the end, it will be Leath’s call. No one to whom we have talked knows what he’s thinking or if he is leaning one way or the other. No decision he makes will make him look good. If he makes a change, he will be accused of costing Auburn’s athletics department possibly tens of millions of dollars. If he doesn’t, he will be accused of giving Malzahn a contract that made it impossible to fire him.

Should Malzahn and Auburn lose at Ole Miss on Saturday, the heat will get unbearable. Enough to bring about an early decision to make a change? Some believe that’s possible.

***

There is no sign that Malzahn has to win a specific number of games. Those who want him gone won’t be satisfied by any number. Those who don’t want him gone are looking for anything they can grasp to vindicate their position. Winning games is their best chance.

A win over Ole Miss, with an open date before Texas A&M comes to town, would likely give Malzahn some breathing space. If Ole Miss wins, all bets are off and next week will be very interesting.

***

If ever there was a game in which Auburn’s offense should get some relief, it is Saturday’s game in Oxford. Ole Miss’ defense is, statistically, among the very worst in college football.

Ole Miss ranks 108th in scoring defense, and lower in every other defensive statistic. In the two statistics that matter most, it is 108th in scoring defense and 121st in total defense. It is 112th in rushing defense and 119th in pass defense.

On the other hand, the Rebels are No. 16 in scoring offense with 41.6 points per game. They are No. 4 in passing offense with 353.1 yards per game and No. 6 in total offense with 550.9 yards per game.

***

Malzahn has been even more involved than usual with the offense in preparation for Ole Miss. Will there be a change in the operation on gameday? Will it be noticeable? We don’t have that answer.

***

Auburn coaches are wary of Ole Miss and its offense. They recognize that Ole Miss’ defense is vulnerable, but they also realize their offense has not been prolific against anyone. A shootout would not be a comfortable place for Auburn to be.

Ole Miss coaches recognize that they need to play better than they have in three previous SEC games – a victory over Arkansas and losses to Alabama and LSU.

“I think the focus is always going 1-0 this week, trying to find a way to get one more point than Auburn, trying to find a way to get stops and to score touchdowns in the red zone and be sharp,” Ole Miss coach Matt Luke said. “We'll have to play really well. We've got to find a way to get off the field, create some turnovers and then try to finish in the red zone, and score touchdowns when we get down there, not field goals."

My goodness, Ole Miss D is trash.

I have a tough decision today, gang. Watch what could be the nail in Gus' coffin or spend a few extra hours in the lot at Hampton. I am not sure I could stomach watching us win this game, but at the same time...if we lose...oh, if we lose....

Lotta people leaking stuff to make themselves look better if you ask me. Obviously a stupid contract but Leath wasn’t making that decision on his own like people are trying to leak now
A university president might have the authority in a vacuum to offer to that kind of contract, but in reality there's a group of monied rednecks more responsible than Leath. That being said, he shouldn't have let it happen.

Yeah but he just comes across as an ass. Entered AU with a jet scandal under his belt, then handled the Bruce situation like a total POS. It’s difficult to like the dude

To be fair when this contract was first announced, it was said that there were not many boosters/money guys who wanted Gus to get said contract and didn't find out out about it until after it was offered and it was too late.

This isn't something that is just coming out now.

Eh maybe. I don’t really like Leath but think there’s a whole lot of CYA going on right now

Yeah he wasn’t doing that on his own. But there’s a lot of rich people that now want it to look like that, so now Marcello and Tate are being fed these stories. Guess that’s the beauty of being rich

Yeah not defending him because I don’t really care if we fired Leath tomorrow. Just think there’s some revisionist history going on by people that were excited by the end of the regular season last year. I include myself in that but I wasn’t negotiating a contract either

I trust that the rich rednecks will ultimately control the narrative rather than the high talking smug pilot.

Which influential people went on record with being upset about the contact?

Don't do that. No one has gone on record then or now. But when the story broke about the contract, it was said that it Leath and Habert (sp?) And that a lot of people (people that matter) were upset that we gave him said contract.

As in the Bunker, like BTA or Road Runner saying it? Or an article hinting at it? Just wondering what you are basing it on

JGT and others.

The problem is the narrative was the same then (immediately after it happened) as it is now. So you can't say the narrative changed if it hasn't. Whether you want to believe the initial comments is one thing. But those comments were made one year ago and are not something that is just coming out now.

They may have been annoyed by it at the time and grumbled about it, but none of them were arguing that Leath was just operating in a vacuum like they are trying to put out there now.

Those same people grumbling could’ve found a way to not offer this contract and didn’t

A fun fact about Leath: he wanted to shake a lot of things up when he started, and he brought up the idea of ending the rolling of Toomer’s corner tradition.

Could you imagine how quickly he would’ve been ousted by the Boogs if he has done that?

My god. What a fuggin idiot if true. It’s as if he jumped into a multi million dollar gig without doing any research on the school whatsoever

Different factions pulling different directions.

It was the same, but as it was also reported at the time, there was a faction who he listened to that wanted it. Too much hubris about losing a coach to Arkansas.

Only name/faction I've heard/read that ever wanted it was Harbert
