If you enjoy corporate clusters and smart/successful people looking terrible and dumb,

You should read the book “Bad Blood” by John Carreyou

For fiction, I also recommend “Before the Fall” by Noah Hawley if you’re looking for a great caricature of how cable news is working today

Random books I have read lately that I liked:

A Man Called Ove
My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry

Both of these are by the same author and I liked them both a lot.

You’re not gonna believe the names involved in this mess

Amazing

I feel so dumb sometimes. Used to be a voracious reader but that’s now been supplanted with binge watching tv series. I truck my mind into believing it’s the same thing but it’s probably not.

I have been in a similar rut lately. Booted up my Kindle paper white a few weeks ago and going back and reading some of the books I’ve bought and never finished.

I like audiobooks but the costs are high for me. I have had Audible plans which are reasonable at $14 a month.

If it’s a book I don’t care much about I’ll generally get the audio book because I’m not worried if I miss details

I listen to the Prince of Tides on audiobook about once a year because the audio version is better than reading it. It’s great.

Like one of my professors used to say, “reading is a contact sport.” It forces you to engage with the material that other mediums can’t. But, this could just be me tricking myself, but stuff like The Wire, The Sopranos, Fargo etc is just as well written and thought provoking as the best novels out there. You just have to engage with it in the same way to get as much out of it. I’d say the same for documentaries as well too for non fiction. That OJ: Made in America doc was incredible

Yeah I can relate to that. Lots of great writing going on now in Hollywood.

I'm trying to do a mix of non-fiction to fiction to keep myself from being sucked into formulas.

My next list of books I own but haven't read or finished:

Jurassic Park (always heard the novel was amazing)
Naked Economics
A Column of Fire
The Lords of Discipline
The Great Debate - Yuval Levin

Yep. I think I’m addicted to audiobooks now, just finished Insomnia by Stephen King, about to start “Things that Matter” by Charles Krauthammer.

Krauthammer was a good writer and has authored some of my favorite columns on politics and life. Very interesting and unique guy.

What’s your go-to medium? Getting a little tired of paying for Audible service...
Sorry bud. I have had audible since around 2005.
I have roughly 300 audio titles. The other audio books I have were books on CDs I got from the library and ripped to itunes. Before that, I used to do some sort of rent return to Cracker barrel but dunno if they still do that. I do not do the monthly through audible. I buy 12 credits at a time then a couple times a year I get some buy 3 credits for 18.00.

I like the app interface and syncing with Audible. It just works so well for me.
Yeah I like it too. Problem is that I got through periods when I’m buying a couple of books a week for several months and then I may not buy one for several months. Plus the books seem to be expensive AF...

I’ll have to look into the credits thing. Didn’t even know that was an option.

Yeah they are. I have a hard time investing in books with terrible narrators too.

Kindle used to have a text-to-speech thing that was awesome on their Kindles, that they got rid of. The computer voice would read the book and it was like an extra Audio book companion. It wasn't perfect but it could work in a pinch.

Yeah i listen to A LOT of audiobooks and podcast with all the commuting I do. I have the basic Audible subscription and then end up buying more credits when i want to binge a particular series or subject. I would definitely listen to the preview they have for each book because there are some real snoozy narrators out there but there are also some really good ones too...to the degree that i'll see what other books they've done and give them a try. Started in 2014 and have 175, there are probably 5 that i never finished due to poor narration or bad writing.

just re-listened to both of Bourdain's books and plowing back through "the Expanse" series. Good stuff if you like futurist Sci-Fi.

Finished Bad Blood last week

One of the best investigative reporting books I’ve ever read

I remember at one time looking online to see if they were hiring.

New book rec - Secret Token - myth, obsession, search for the Lost Colony at Roanoke.

I’ve never read a book that caused a greater desire to kick its author in the nuts when I finished. Damn good book. Have to read it to the very end.
