OT: The PORE thread of the GREG

They say they raise interest rates to curb inflation, but, don’t increased rates also increase inflation since it now costs more to borrow money (credit cards, commercial lending for businesses, mortgage rates) so making everything go up? The only people that are okay with a rate hike is a person who is saving.

No you're totally wrong about this. Higher interest rates do curb inflation. The whole point of making money "more expensive" (another way of saying more scarce) is to decrease circulation. Not going to be a perfect analogy but think of the global economy as the body and currency is the blood. If you have TONS of red blood cells carrying oxygen (oxygen is productivity...stick with me) and they are all really tiny then it takes loads of them to get something done and that's bad, especially if you want your individual blood cells (dollars) to be valuable, or, more productive.

So you would restrict the flow of those cells and design them to be larger and therefore more efficient. Increasing inflation restricts the flow of money by making it more risky to get and therefore curbing investment. If I can borrow money for 1% per year, then I only need to be sure that I will make 3% to make it worth it, but if it costs 4% then I have to be much more cautious about my investments, even if I'm not borrowing from anyone, because money is harder to "get" but especially if I'm borrowing money.

This especially applies to banks, they aren't going to loan you money if they don't think you can pay it back at that higher interest.

You can see why raising interest rates is actually very important. However I will say that our currency isn't backed by anything other than a credit rating that's made up by some orgaization and most of the debt the US owes is to itself.

At the higher levels, as far as I can tell, they play by completely different rules...it all seems very ****y tbh. Kind of like the mortgage crisis where even at the highest levels the government and large banks were essentially stealing from people.

Granted, I've done a lot more reading about how to be the guy with 100k - 10 mil than I have about how the IMF and World Bank loan money to governments. But in this arena if you want my undereducated opinion, it's all made up bullshit and it would collapse in a heartbeat if people lost "faith" in it, because literally nothing backs it up other than that we all agree to play by the same rules....its very strange.

Good post

I understand the purpose but they jump the gun on inflation a bit. It is still very low. I am fine with scheduled increases not “we may raise, we may not raise. We may raise 2 times. We may raise 4”. That crap does nothing good. They economy doesn’t react that fast to a rate change but it does create a faux bs panic.

Maybe that's intended, someone gives you a cool 200k to say you MIGHT. You have no liability and they get to trade on the information.....a 2% swing could mean a billion dollars in some cases. It's very corrupt up there, why do you think the highest level politicians all live in million dollar homes when they are supposed to make 160k per year...

What if we raised the age to purchase or possess a gun to 25 or something? Would that help out the school stuff some?

To my understanding the weapons are almost always obtained from parents who don't secure them or illegally? Tom, could we get a fact check on that?

This kid bought the gun himself. Maybe make it 21 at least.

I think we should raise the voting age to 21 and make it so that you aren't legally an adult until you're 21. Guns, alcohol, etc included. But if you're gonna let kids go to Afghanistan and kill people at 18, you should let them vote, drink, and own guns.

Can't have it both ways, and I think letting 18 year olds join the military is just fine, so for that reason I guess I kind of disagree? Although like, I also know owning a gun is a massive responsibility and most 18 year olds are no where near ready for that unless like me your dad trained you for it from birth basically...but thats not the normal case.

I guess I'm for mandatory training for a license and mental health screening. Honestly though, I am way more well read on things like arguments for and against time-slice theories on social justice and international politics etc...

This kind of issue is really nitty gritty for the types of research I have done, so what I'm trying to say is I don't really have what I feel like is a "good" opinion.

“I don't agree with holding a family accountable for an individual's actions but its something. My idea is just be super fvcking strict. 1st step impliment 100% full registration. All guns must be fully registered and licensed to ONE individual. Make it free to do so for the first 6 months so that people don't feel the government is trying to make it a cash grab. Then after that it's a $250 fee to register your firearm. If you want a gun so god damn bad then pay a fee. All automatic weapons though are permanently banned. There is literally zero reason for those to exist other than to kill people en mass and no asshole is using an AR-15 to protect his family. So now you've implemented mandatory registration and given 6 month grace period. for free registration NO EXCUSES. Also all illegal(automatic) firearms can be turned into authorities no questions asked, no legal penalties for the first 6 months. Now after this 6 months anybody caught with an unregistered firearm or a firearm not registered in their name or an illegal firearm faces an automatic 3 year prison sentence. No exceptions. You're in possession too bad you're a fvcking moron. A second offence gains you a 10 year prison sentence.

This may sound crazy extreme but fvck it the situation is crazy extreme. Do this and see how many fvcking losers wanna be in possession of a firearm. It's a way to get the guns out of the "bad guys" hands.”

I'll leave you with this editorial from the Sydney Morning Herald:

"It is incomprehensible to us, as Australians, that a country so proud and great can allow itself to be savaged again and again by its own citizens. We cannot understand how the long years of senseless murder, the Sandy Hooks and Orlandos and Columbines, have not proved to Americans that the gun is not a precious symbol of freedom, but a deadly cancer on their society.
We point over and over to our own success with gun control in the wake of the Port Arthur massacre, that Australia has not seen a mass shooting since and that we are still a free and open society. We have not bought our security at the price of liberty; we have instead consented to a social contract that states lives are precious, and not to be casually ended by lone madmen. But it is a message that means nothing to those whose ideology is impervious to evidence."

Should Pam Bondi be our attorney general? She seems far more qualified than Jeff Sessions.

Putting people in prison and ruining their lives for a lack of registration is a terrible idea. I’m not saying I have the answer. But all this does is hurt currently law abiding citizens. This does nothing to get guns out of “bad guys” hands.

Not to mention the massive undertaking and no real way to properly enforce the measure. Virtually all long guns are not registered. You would create a massive bureaucracy overnight.

It gets worse....

A total of four Broward County Sheriff’s deputies failed to enter Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., during last week’s mass shooting, according to a new report. […]

…Peterson wasn’t the only one — three other Broward County Sheriff’s deputies also remained outside the school with their pistols drawn as they took cover behind their vehicles, CNN reports.

It appears that they didn’t enter the school even when police officers arrived later to the crime scene.

Additionally, the Coral Springs police officers who arrived at the school later were frustrated and surprised that the sheriff’s deputies did not accompany them as they entered the school, sources told CNN.

I would need to see how much each person makes annually to decide how much blame I put on them for not entering an active shooting scene.

Peterson made $75,000 last year

Then can’t blame him.I’d be tempted to wait for the SWAT to arrive myself unless I had family inside. We really should pay Police and Resource Officers more if we think we deserve their deaths in any given scenario.

That said he didn’t have to storm the guy but could have worked his way closer and tried to get a shot. He did nothing really. Why have a gun if you can’t use it. Would be hard to take down a guy with a semi auto with a pistol. But the coach wasn’t scared. It is messed up.

Personal decision by the coach and I applaud it. I just don’t blame someone that took 4 min or 240 seconds to decide wtf was going on and if it was worth his life to engage. I mean are they going to give full salary and benefits to that coach for the next 40 years or so to his survivors, or was it up to him to have gotten a life insurance policy in the case of a lone shooter going crazy in his school?

Saw the Hogg kid and his friend last night on Bill Maher. My God they are terrible. Even if I agree with them their attitude is such a dam(n) turnoff.

My God Trump is in Wolf Mode. Going to meet NK, and these Tariffs will work.
