Byron Cowart asked for his release from Auburn because of his lack of playing time and a health issue his mother is coping with.

In an interview with AL.com Tuesday morning after he was granted his release, Cowart said he plans to return home to Seffner, Fla. and resume his academic studies at an area school "within the next week" for the remainder of the semester before transferring to another program.

"I'm happy with my decision and I know that this ain't it for me," Cowart said. "My main reason was my mother's health is more important. Me being an only child, got to get back to home to her. Plus I already wasn't playing enough and contributing to the team.

"I'll see what options I have and what the NCAA allows me to do. This isn't over for me and this definitely is not the end of my college career. ... I can guarantee you football is not over for me. I still love the game, I love everything about football."

Cowart had three tackles with .5 for loss this season and 15 tackles with 1.5 for loss in 26 games in his three years at Auburn.

The No. 1-ranked recruit by Rivals in 2015, Cowart began his career at defensive end for two seasons before moving to defensive tackle this offseason.

Cowart said he "felt better" at tackle since the season began and coaches said they saw improvement in his play.

He was unsure if his next school will be close to home. Cowart told AL.com his release allows him to transfer anywhere outside the SEC and teams not on Auburn's 2018 schedule, which also includes Washington, Southern Miss, Liberty and Alabama State.

"It depends. Once I get home and see how bad my mom - she just came from the doctor yesterday and I'll go to the doctor with her," Cowart said. "She had surgery, I think, a couple months ago. She didn't tell me everything because she didn't want to stress me out when I was here at Auburn. Once I get home she'll fill me in on everything with her doctor.

"If I'm going to be far from home, it has to be meaningful. I really need a shot to make it to league. I'm not asking for nobody to give me a starting job or anything like that but I just felt like I was more than the 10 snaps or 20 snaps I was getting a game."

AL.com will update this story.

so i posted this in one of the threads @ TBS but i genuinely wonder why some boog booster didn't bring his mama to AU and put her up in a house with a "job" like every other program w/half a brain does in these situations.

But he at least beat his stated goal of being out of AU in 3 years... actually over-achieved on that front by more than half a season. Congrats... and

Looks like another Tiger saw the light. Good for him. Bless his souls for spending 3 years with that coaching staff.
I'm wondering, with only 3 games played this year (and I'm assuming that I remember hearing that the new redshirt rule was passed and in effect), would he be eligible to withdraw from school immediately and this year count as his redshirt (sitting out) year and be eligible next year. If so, I could definitely see him end up at Miami or FAU.

Hasn't passed yet.

Kook, anyone anywhere talking about the state of the locker room? Seems like it has been a rough year 3 games in. Just wondered if anyone has commented on team chemistry.

I don't think there's a negative vibe in locker room, but after 2013, I've never gotten the sense that there's ever been a strong locker room chemistry. Something just hasn't been right to me

Kind of what I was getting at. Just no chemistry. Though during the boog game, Matthews was playing air guitar on the field after a big play. Dunno what that was about.

What?

Haven't you seen the locker room go nuts when Gus moves his hand up at an angle and says "We gotta be like this!" They're all in.

Chemistry seems to be fine. I think the feeling you (and we get) is just the result of Derp Derp being our head coach. That is enough to bring any good mood down.

Definitely respect the kid's decision. Hope it works out for him. I can't presume to know what it's like growing up without a dad like he did. I'm sure he has some issues and it sounds like Rodney wasn't the best fit for him. Hope he balls out down the line

been saying he was a bust for years now. Guess what bruh is a BUST.

Also, TATE said he was going to go back home to prepare for the draft. If true, can't wait for the negative recruiting to kick in

This. It is silly that coaches can come and go but kids must stay where they are unhappy and miserable or lose partial illegibility.
