I have all kinds of theories, but number one is that Gus made him start Darius James.

I don’t think he was gonna be fired but I do think he was told to look around, and good for him for finding a good landing spot.

My theory is Chip told Gus to make a choice between him or Herb. All that mess about about Chip and Herb being in the booth or on the field kind of reeked of a power struggle.

I have a very hard time believing Gus Malzahn would force a position coach to play a less-skilled upperclassmen over a probably more talented youngster.

That just hasn't ever been the M.O. of a genius corching mind like Gus Malzahn, who owns a Birmingham Bowl victory over powerhouse Memphis.

You're right, what a dumbass I am.

Curious to see who wants to work with GusCo.
1. Could it end up being the largest guaranteed OL coaching contract in ncaaf history to get someone here?
2. Will a hire be made before signing day?
3. Does this kill any chance for a Grad transfer?
4. What are the chances this move was forced and Gus had 0 power to stop it?
5. Why on earth would Texas want Coach Worm?
I’ll hang up and Greg On.

Now that Gus is guaranteed another 4 years and is rumored to have a bigger budget for his assistants, I imagine that a lot of coaches would be interested. I’m gonna guess he gets an upgrade but I have no idea why Tom Herman wants anything to do with Coach Worm

I had heard a couple different times during the season that Chip, Herb, Horton, and Porter would all look for opportunities to leave if they could find one. This was right after the LSU game. Those assistants were just fed up with how Gus was operating from what I was told, and they didn’t think there was any hope for him to change.

Yeah now Gus can hire whoever TF he wants with literally no repercussions.

1 - Wouldn't shock me, would be more to do with the fact that contracts are escalating at absurd rates anyway and everyone knows AU will pay top dollar so why hold out for anything less.
2 - Probably
3 - Depends on who we hire I guess
4 - about zero
5 - For whatever reason, people who are not the current fans of the team Hand is on think Hand is great. I think because he's funny social media guy who will give good quotes. When you aren't watching his actual performance you can convince yourself he's good it seems.

His biggest leverage now is keeping whoever he wants that is on staff for as long as their contract is up to date. He needs someone else to sign off on new hires though. They have to agree to payment terms with someone other than Gus so he can run into walls there if AU wanted to play it that way.

Chip was about ready to fight Gus after Clemson

I was thinking along the lines that Herb’s Contract was up and Gus couldn’t get it renewed.
Possible I guess. Not sure Hand was to the point of having the boosters block him yet though. My guess is this became a Chip or Herb thing. And Herb wasn't going to win that battle. We likely got fortunate someone as large at Texas entered the picture.

I've always wondered what Chip was told when he took the job. Clearly he was brought in to add to what Gus does and not run his own offense, would love to know what he was told.

Here's a lot of money and a big stage and your current coach (ASU) is probably going to be fired too and you're not even really that qualified for this position so make the best of what you can.

I think he was told that he’d have full control of the offense. It’s what Gus said at Chip’s hiring press conference and it’s what he continued to repeat all the time during the season.

I don't think you hire someone and say, "hey man, I'm gonna tell the media that you have full control of the O, but the reality is that you don't. You cool with that?" I think the question is, was Gus being honest when he promised Chip full control of the offense? I kind of think he fully intended to keep that promise but he just can't help himself under pressure and always reverts back to form.

That.

And when the head coach spends the whole offseason telling everyone who will listen that Chip is calling the plays, and then the head coach calls every play against Clemson and looks like garbage, I would be a little upset since my reputation was on the line.

I'm not entirely buying it. I think there is a difference between "I am letting you call plays" and "I am giving you full control of the offense." Gus doesn't want to change offenses, which is why I think he wanted to hire Chip all along. My understanding is that Chip had playcalling duty the entire year, but Gus limited early on how much he could put in. I do think by the end of the year Chip had full control.
