OT: I deleted facebook

Not sure what to do with my time or my thoughts but it feels good to not feel like you have to put on a show for people.

Me to my kids someday:

"Son, back when I first started using Facebook all you could do was upload a picture, a bio, and send people direct messages. And then they came out with the "Status Update". And then people became insufferable"

one of the most interesting things I've heard about the rise of social media and especially facebook, is that it hasn't made society worse, it's just held a mirror up to it.

So, facebook didn't CHANGE us, it just showed us who we really were. Self obsessed, moronic, liars who have really strong opinions about a bunch of shit we don't have any education on. I think, for right now, facebook means way too much in terms of social status, like if you have a cool facebook you're "cool" with like pictures with friends and headshots and witty statuses. Or I could just not worry about that shit and not have one and have some privacy and not try that hard and when people meet me instead of looking me up they have to actually talk to me and there's some mystery there. idk.

this was part of my friend's wife's status to the world today. Made me want to scream for a couple of reasons.

I don't run in circles of people who do witty things on Facebook anymore. I'd say my feed broke down like this:

25% Political Culture War Fake News
45% Kids pictures
10% Dumb rants about how the person at ____ isn't as smart as me
20% "I went to this place" selfies

yeah a lot of people just like grandstanding or pretending like they are the "light in the darkness" for everyone who knows them.

It's massively stupid.

Also I love being reminded of every tragedy every time I get on a website.

etc.

It's just like...ok 95% of the time I visit this website I get negative feelings from it. I think about it subconsciously at every event, every picture, every relationship, etc etc etc. and I wasn't even really active on facebook I can't imagine how subtly invasive it is for people who are extremely active.

I just woke up one day and thought about it and was like...this thing is making my life objectively worse. I'm out.

Don't forget the pics of what's for dinner. Sigh

I had to “unfollow” a bunch of people. Lots of people only use it for their business, which is totally fine, but I’m not interested in the real estate you’re slinging in Charlotte

I think this is somewhat true, but the mirror didn't have the impact it should have had. We should have looked at it and all tried to figure out how to fix what was wrong with us as a society. Instead we seemed to just double down on all the terrible parts of humanity.

I think the other part that is problematic is that it's allowed us to compare ourselves to everyone more deeply than ever before. From FB to Instagram to LinkedIn, it's all damn contest and I can see how if you were struggling with career or family or both you'd get depressed fast looking at everyone you grew up with telling you how great their lives are.
