OT: Imagine for 1 second Gus wasn’t a complete idiot

We’d have Bama, UGA and the Boogs sitting 1,2 and 3 in the polls.

Would be a very similar situation to Bama, LSU, and Arkansas a few years ago.

If Gus could ever let go of the offense and let a strong OC have the reins, I think he could be a very good HC. But I don't believe for one second he's capable of doing that, at least not for any meaningful period of time.

Totally disagree. He has zero strengths that a good head coach possesses. None. Terrible game manager, disorganized AF, horrible with personnel, etc.

If anything, he should take back the reins of the offense and run the only style he's ever had success with. That's his ONLY value. If he won't do that, he's a severe detriment to the progrum.

I think the offense we've seen and severely dislike is his offense. The offense he's had the most success with (Cam and Nick) isn't what he's done most of his career. He's never had running QBs like those guys. Even Aplin at Ark St wasn't that type of QB, although he was a decent runner.

We'll just disagree about his potential ability to be a good HC. I don't think he will ever get out of his own way to become that, but I think it's there.

Yep. I don't think he's as awful of a recruiter as @L I G E R thinks, but he's no game changer there. Has to be surrounded by stud recruiters.

Terrible at PR and engaging the fans. No long term vision for the program. Seemingly no sense of direction in where to take the offense from year to year. Loyal to a fault to players because they follow his instructions perfectly in practice. Hasn't exactly been the greatest at putting people in the league. Has no earthly idea how to use timeouts or manage the clock effectively. Doesn't incorporate any variety into first down hurry up plays. Doesn't use garbage time to work on things for tougher opponents. Unable to adjust when the defense hits him with something that didn't factor into his programming.

Etc, etc, etc.

TL/DR - bruh sucks, and should never have been given an opportunity outside of Arkansas high school football

Has happened only once before I think? One conference I mean. Big 8, final poll, 1971. And only eight teams. DAMN

Rank Team (FPV) Conf W-L-T Points Last Week
1
< 1 Nebraska (55) Big 8 13-0 1100 W 38-6 N #2 Alabama (Orange)
2 < 3 Oklahoma Big 8 11-1 990 W 40-22 N #5 Auburn (Sugar)
3 < 7 Colorado Big 8 10-2 746

He needs to be an OC for somebody. Stay away from fans, media and kids until he’s at practice. Sign the fallbacks, let real recruiters get talent for him. Nothing he’s done here says he’s a going to be a good HC at a big school. He changes from CEO to more hands on multiple times a year. He’s clueless on how to get it done consistently. He has proven that.

I've seen a lot of "AU would be Top 5 if Gus hadn't been so dumb vs LSU" stuff in the last 2 days. I have to say, I'm not sure that wouldn't have been the worst scenario for AU long term. Until he proves me wrong, I'm convinced he can't get past Kirby or Nick. So him having a top 5 or top 3 team heading into Amen Corner probably entrenches him at AU and keeps he wolves at bay.

I need him gone. Or I need him to run the table so I have to eat my words. I don't need him beating the LSU/MSU/Arkansas/A&M's of the world and getting another extension and raise.

Don't forget the panic attacks, AUtism, nose picking and just general shittiness.

you guys have pretty well covered it... none of this is new to any of us, but it’s cathartic to get it out periodically

very little of this is football related... the guy is just a paranoid, insecure, freak show and the more the pressure mounts, the more he shuts down and gets inside his own head and becomes even more of a freak show... his personality flaws are going to prevent him from having a great corching career... he had the blueprint, and had a 4-5 year head start with it in 2010 and flubbed it after CAM left, somehow uncovered an even better version of it with NICK, Tre, G-Rob, and Sammie, and flubbed it even worse

If he, not as a corch but as a man, had enough self confidence and security to:

borrow ideas from other people without seeing it as an indictment of his own limitations...
modify simple concepts from week to week or season to season without seeing it as admission that he didn’t already have a perfect answer...
admit fault and go away from what has proven to no longer work without viewing it is as a complete failure rather than a temporary setback...

he could have taken the blueprint of:
baddest mf’er on the field plays QB...
mauler OT sets the edge and protects for deep passing game...
surround them with enough speed to threaten every inch of their field horizontally and vertically...
and then adjust accordingly every week or season from there...

when they take away an edge run, or deep threats, or qb runs, or whatever - add and subtract from the trimmings you’ve built around your base package... because even SABAN’s best group of 18-20 year olds can’t defend that correctly every single snap for 60 minutes

Auburn is one of the 10? 12? small handful of schools in the country where you can reasonably attract the talent to make something so simple actually work

that dumbass had it served to him on a silver platter and threw it away out of paranoia induced obliviousness... and I’m way more upset by that than I am losing games

"Recruiting ability" is a two-fold endeavor. One part is "evaluating/identifying" your targets and the other part is "signing them".

He himself is horrible at the "signing them" part, with regards to elite talent. The talent we DO sign is purely a product of the assistant coaches, which isn’t sustainable during staff turnover.

But that's not the most troubling trait...

We're dealing with a lunatic who once evaluated Lamar Jackson and Jerod Evans and said "no thx, I'm good" in favor of Tyler Queen and JF3.

That is one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen from an Auburn coach. I just cannot fathom the kind of deranged mental impairment that level of stupidity arises from.

Call me crazy, but I think he’d still be a great OC somewhere. Some people just aren’t cut out to deal with the pressure of being the top guy and he’s absolutely one of them. And so was Gene, and Gene was great as the DC at UNC after he got canned at AU.

Malzahn just cracks and can’t handle the pressure so he gets so predictable and conservative. He needs an alpha HC that he respects to tell him when his shit stinks and that’ll trust him to keep the hammer down too.

Some of you will think this is crazy, but the scariest thing imaginable to me would be Saban hiring him. Saban would tell him when to let off the gas, Saban would ixnay things that don't work, Saban would not let the fullback throw the ball, Saban would make him put the best athlete at QB in the wildcat, Saban would immediately identify the need for stud dual threat QBs. If you partnered all that with Saban's talent and defense he would never lose another game.

Impossible. Would take way longer to work through all of the scenarios to find one suitable enough to imagine for 1 second that Gus isn't a complete idiot. I'll need a few days to accommodate this request.
lulz, thought the same when i read OP

At this point I think I would be angry(ier) if Gus runs the table this season. It would only remind me of how bleeping stupid he was and just how much that stupidity cost us. We have absolutely wasted the best AU defense in a decade just because our offensive genius HC is too damn idiotic to get out of his own way. He put up 117 yards vs Clemson. He ran the ball on 17 straight first downs vs LSU and blew a 20-point lead. Who does that kind of thing? If we beat UGA and bama, I would have the urge to physically hurt the man.

Gus has a lack of fundamental understanding of football personnel. Utilization of personnel to create mismatches is a foreign concept to him. He seems not to even think of players in terms of which one can exploit a weakness of another and beat an opponent. They are all just Xs and Os to go places he draws up on paper. SMH.

Players just need to execute...

"It's not the end of the world." - guy who gets paid millions of dollars to draw up plays for youngsters after drawing up a lot of bad plays and costing team first victory in Baton Rouge this century.
I wasn't even mad. The shear amount of lack of self awareness was breath-taking. The guy is such a PR buffoon he had not the smallest hint of just how inappropriate that phrase was. Scott Strickland would've floated "firing with cause" after a press conference like that. Of course, Gus would already be gone with Strickland after he admitted to coaching not to get blown out against UA, instead of coaching to give his team the best chance to win.
