Let’s just have soldier with ptsd kill a kid and cover it up is such a weird subplot to an action packed movie
I barely even thought about it but I definitely didn't have the same feelings you did. I didn't think the soldier was a murderer, I don't think the dad is a murderer. I think all of the events were necessary to tell the story of normal people getting off their butts to help the cause, and as was the case throughout the whole movie, people acted in self-interest and dangerous toward their allies.
The kid got on board the boat to go on an adventure, like a lot of the soldiers did at the beginning of the war. The soldier who hit him had seen the war and it had changed him. The soldier hitting the kid showed how dangerous the mission was for the kid, who had mentioned he always wanted to be a hero. The soldier realized afterward that the war had changed him for the worse.
It was a bit clumsy but I was not confused by it at all. If that were my son I'd be upset but if the man turns the boat around when he sees the kid onboard, his boat would have been commandeered by the Navy, and would have never been in the exact perfect place at the exact time to save a lot of crucial soldiers lives along the way.
Obviously there wasn't time in the story to have a full court-martial of the soldier in the aftermath.
