Is it OK to be a big Gus fan on the Greg?

Nice try OP

I bet if Gus loses less games than he has in 80% of his seasons as HC at AU(4-6), then he’ll get more popular here.

If you're not at least skeptical of Gus your opinion on him as our leader of football means nothing to me.

Skeptical is one thing, defeatist is another. Admittedly, I'd be a fan of JGT if he was the head coach at AU. Plus when Gus is ON, and the team is healthy he is the best coach in the country.

As idiotic as that last sentence is, it's not even the dumbest thing your blind loyalty allows you to believe and post about Gus.

I probably lean towards thinking Gus is better than most here think. He frustrates me because he shows he could be a top 2-3 coach at times, and then he pulls out some doozies that remind us he is not there.

I still have a hard time saying he is a top 10 coach, but I have a hard time naming 10 coaches who I really think are better. There’s a lot of bad coaches out there

Well said IMO. I admit he made mistakes. Two glaring ones are FL ST in the NC game and LSU last year when he went conservative. I also think he has learned from those F ups. He was whipping everyone's ass after LSU last year up until we ran out of RB's. Like every coach except the REC, he needs a little luck on injuries.

He has shown he can compete in recruiting and if he has a good QB and the D doesnt fall off much, he can win big, including a NC or 2.

War Damn Gus.

Saban
Meyer
Dabo
Jimbo
James Franklin
Kirby
Chris Peterson
Chip Kelly
Gundy
Shaw
Patterson

Then you got the other guys like Frost, Fitzgerald, Cutcliffe, etc who are probably better and just don’t have the notoriety quite yet

You could probably find the same flaws in them that you do in Gus, if they were Auburn’s coach though right? And Kirby has done the same thing in 2 years that Gus had in 2 years to play devils advocate.

Shaw, Gundy, Franklin, Jimbo - all have had some pretty bad choke jobs. Urban losing badly to Iowa last year would have been inexcusable to us.

I just think Gus is closer to those guys than others here do, we just don’t scrutinize them like we do Gus. I was still pretty annoyed at locking him in with a 7 year contract though

I’ll also add that Gus had given us a lot more complete roster than Chizik’s recruiting ever did. Not that Chizik is the standard, but our defense is fun to watch again and he should get credit for that, even if it was just for the coaches he hired.

Pardon my sunshine this morning

I’ve never seen a single one of them think that running a single wing with their fullback would be successful

And those bad coaches are a big reason he’s able to only lose 4-6 games most years.

Making the assumption the OL proves above average.

If that is the case, one player staying healthy could be the difference between potential greatness and 4-6 loses. Obviously, that is Stidham.

When Gus had a good QB, look out.

please say that this tired trope will not be the bulk of what you bring to the @GREG

Fair enough. I get it. Being a Gus fan is not acceptable on the Greg.

There are Gus fans everywhere. Just don’t say stupid crap like you did earlier about him being the best coach in the country. Don’t you know how idiotic that sounds?

Opinions vary and that what makes message boards fun...to me anyway.

I think saying Gus is the best is much less idiotic than the people who believe the midget and West Vance are legitimate.

Again...opinions vary.

Gus is better than people give him credit for on here. It's just that mistakes that he does make are just so fuggin dumb and glaring that they're difficult to forgive and forget. I don't think he's a tier one coach, but he's the best coach AU has had since Dye and I don't think many people would've been able to build the program he's built in the shadow of the Saban dynasty.
