wonder is AD Green is aware of the @greg and it's use as an accurate monitor of the state of boog athletics?

Well gang I’ve broken down the tape and have a few musings.
  • Chuma and Mac are so elite on the offensive glass. I think Hopkins reached boog overload at the 1:30 mark in the 1st when Chuma tracked down that loose ball between 2 UW oafs.
  • Let’s continue with defensive rebounding. They had only 3 offensive boards as a team all from that big ugly that fouled out.
  • We ran that ass while the best backcourt in the nation played what I would consider not great for them. Still plenty solid to run anyone out the Clam but Jared missed quite a few on the drive I’d expect him to make. Bryce was ok but he’s still due to catch fire.
  • Austin was rusty but he’s such a target down low. No one has any chance whatsoever of fronting him when he posts. He’s so solid with the ball. Patient. The little hook was so smooth and had the dime to Chuma for the jam. Had an easy flush on a drop off. He’s gonna dominate and I think he’ll look a little more fluid on D as well as he gets more reps.
  • I don’t really want to talk about the backup PG but J’Von is serviceable. Really quick, can get in the lane. He got hosed on a couple pity calls in the 2nd half. I’m wondering if Samir may eventually get those backup PG mins cause he needs to be out there for 25-30/ gm.
  • Malik has been wonderful. 1 TO through 41 mins this season. Looks quicker on D and just all around elevating his game and knowing his role.
  • Bruce is so underrated as a tactician. Just dissected a team most would struggle with. It’s a pretty big deal we have a full staff to prep and dog cuss youngsters at practice too.
Bonus stat. Chuma’s PER through 2 games is 40.5. That’s ungodly. For comparison trash loser and ‘SEC POY’ Grant Williams PER last year was 21.9.

I hesitated saying too much about J’Von Friday night... I want to be fair - and if I’m being honest the Davion wound is still too fresh for me to be impartial

he is very quick... and has a lot of promise defensively even though his size and lack of strength will limit him... but he’s shaky running the offense right now - very shaky

some of that has been mitigated by BRUCE’s legendary genius playing Jared off ball while J’Von is in the game... but even then, there’s a lot of dribbling the air out of the ball and empty perimeter passing... hopefully that gets better as he gets more comfortable with the offense and his fellow HYG’s - because he’s quick enough to attack offensively instead of reacting... he’s just not there yet

I’ll give him til January, but if he’s not ready by early SEC play, then it will be time for some Samir PG minutes... and my Davion sized hole in my heart will begin to be filled by a new #10 playing backup PG minutes

Yeah the thought of these bums having to deal with Davion while Jared drinks a Gatorade for a few mins still hurts my heart but Samir could definitely alleviate that. Hopefully J’Von gets a little more comfortable he’s got decent potential for the role.

also - as I was watching Friday I had a slight epiphany...

IF Shariffe Cooper wants to reclassify...
and IF Jared returns for his senior year...

showing a willingness and ability to play Jared off ball should show Sweet Shariffe that the minutes will be there for him as a freshman, because he and Jared can play together and fill Bryce’s minutes with a second primary ball handler and creator instead of just looking at backup PG minutes

Jared
Shariffe
Samir
Chuma
Mac

that will work just fine, thank you very much

wondering if Sweet Baby J and Smoke get less scores this season in general. especially with Samir, Austin and Danjel in the mix. Still think both will have higher scoring averages but quietly wonder if all this additional talent puts a bit of a drain on their opps and totals from last year.

I think Malik has improved his shot. Much more fluid and under control.

through 2 games he’s improved his everything

just a true joy to watch it all unfold - and I never thought it possible, but even the camera seems to love him more this year

Rewatching game right now. Samir seems to get along with the other boogs much better than Mustapha. Feel like there is some real chemistry there.

I actually like J’Von’s game. He’s not with it yet offensively, but he has the ability to break down defenders on the dribble and force help and has distributed the ball pretty well. Plus, I think he’s a motivated defender. He plays hard and that is probably most important for him and this team. We just need 10 or so tough, energetic minutes from him each game. If he makes a shot or two, great. If not, as long as he distributes well and doesn’t turn it over and plays solid defense, that’s all I want.

Dunbar has been really surprising so far. Mostly under control (still got some of that JUCO/Bowers play in him but it’s been in check mostly this year) and his shot looks better. Plus, he seems to better understand his role with this team now and brings that energy and edge when he’s on the court.

Someone posted a highlight from Wiley’s freshman year on the bunker, and it gives me a lot of hope he can get back into that form. Mostly it’s low block post-ups and putback dunks, but he looks fluid and athletic. Plus that’s mainly what we need from him.

If I had one concern from the UW game that might be a bit of a trend, it’s Harper finishing at the rim. He struggled with that a bit last year and seems to be having some issues again this year. Not sure it’s that big of a deal, but it would be nice to see him have a few games where he finishes well on his drives.
