OT: 2019-20 boog hoops

and so the attrition and grad tranny watch officially begins. I'm guessing we lose Wiley and add another big guy. Haven't heard any positive or negative words on what Akingbola is still doing in Africa. Hopefully Bruce can now focus on sweet talking the state department into getting that kid back in Boogville pronto

Departures:

Bryce Brown (makes me so sad to type that)
Horace Spencer (just as sad typing that)
Malik Dunbar (sad for that one too. Can’t replace that energy or infectious smile so easily)
Cole “Wun Wun” Blackstock
Will “I dunked in a game once” Macoy

Returning (as of now):

Jared Harper
Samir Doughty
J’Von McCormick
Chuma Okeke
Danjel Purifoy
Anfernee McLemore
Austin Wiley

Additions:

Jamal Johnson
Tyrell Jones
Allen Flanagan
Isaac Okoro
Jaylin Williams
Stretch Akingbola

Right now, we have no room for grad transfers or true transfers. Attrition seems to always happen though. But with that group of 13, I think that’s a really really good basketball team. Might be missing an elite shooter, but we seem to have all of the other ingredients for another strong run in the SEC.

Based on the current returning guys and additions, this is my projected depth chart:

PG: Harper/McCormick/Jones
SG: Doughty/Johnson/Flanigan
SF: Okoro/Purifoy (when Chuma returns)
PF: Purifoy/Williams (Chuma starts when he’s back)
C: Wiley/McLemore/Stretch

Just an embarrassment of riches. I don’t want to know a life without Bruce ever again.

Rather put this here than bump a thread from last season but I just need to say how ice was Mac at the line when he stroked the shit out of both ends of the 1-1? 9/12 kid is back and gonna be sick next year.

Danjel couldn’t hit a 3 but was showing all around game. Gonna be a stud next year no doubt.

Samir really stepped his game up in the tourney. Goes without saying SBJ/ Dr C are all Americans next year if we get them back. McCormick is an all league PG and that’s our backup. Sexiest FR class in the country on the way. Who knows who all actually comes back but gatdamn its a mortal lock we have the best squad in the country again next year.

We don’t really seem to have any transfer candidates outside of Mac. He probably won’t start next year if Wiley returns, and he could go to a mid-major and be a really good player. Don’t think he leaves though. Samir would have to graduate and would be on this third different team. Purifoy has already said he’s returning. McCormick probably isn’t in line to graduate. Don’t see Harper grad transferring.

So, the big question is do any of Harper, Chuma, or Wiley leave early. Chuma was almost assuredly gone until the injury, but I think he’s back now. Harper and Wiley could both leave and play overseas or try to make it in the G-League, but for Harper, I don’t see that as being more beneficial than returning to Auburn for one more year. Wiley’s health and how much run is left in his legs are the only reason o think he’d leave, but it’s a legitimate enough reason to go.

This seems to be a really close knit team so I'd like to think that no one is transferring but you never know. It probably should be pointed out that Sweet Danjel announced that he'd be returning before Chuma got injured. It could've easily been that Chuma was already talking about going pro and Danjel used that info to say he'd stay. But you never know. He seems to have regained his Boog Heart, and should be a starter for at least a month so I'd hope stays.

J'von and Samir are kind of wild cards. It's possible that Jvon leaves if Jared returns. Might sound dumb, but I could see it happening. With Bryce gone though, I could easily see Bruce running a lot more of the Jvon at PG and Jared at the 2 sets that he's run this year. So hopefully that entices him to stick around.

Samir. Already came of the bench at the end of the season and I absolutely think Okoro will be starting at the 3. So it comes down to if he's guaranteed to take Bryce's spot or not. I don't think that's a forgeone conclusion with Jamal Johnson lingering there. But who knows. But it won't surprise me if either one of those guys gets out. Hope not though because I like both of them a lot.

No chance Mac goes anywhere. Even if Austin returns, then Mac is still gonna be the starter.

Samir has to graduate to transfer. He’s a redshirt junior right now with one year left. JVon would at least have a redshirt year somewhere. And o think if Wiley stays healthy and returns, he starts next year. Bruce even said in an interview leading up to the game yesterday that had Austin been healthy in the preseason he would’ve started.

Samir sat out a year at VCU for the same reason Danjel did. He didn't redshirt last season, he redshirted his first year at VCU. That puts him two years of school at VCU and two at AU. He could easily be graduating

Yeah, I agree. I think it’s possible he’s graduated. Also think the same for Danjel. That opens the door for both to transfer, but that’s their only option. And if for some reason neither has graduated, they will be here next year.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I think Danjel will be a starter even when Chuma returns. I'm betting he has his best off-season yet. Maybe even develops a little more post-up game. I just have this feeling that this season grew him up a lot, and we're going to see the best version of him in the fall. Obviously could be wrong, so I guess we will see.

Edit: Not that I think he will be starting over Chuma, just that Okoro would be out before him (or whoever starts at the 3).

Samir has already transferred so he would need to graduate to leave and play elsewhere. Doubt that is happening but who knows.

I have heard Mac could transfer. Hope that doesn't happen as I think we will need him whether Wiley is back or not. If he could get back to where he was last year, he would be one of our most valuable pieces.

It will be interesting to see how the depth chart shakes out. Johnson was a good shooter at Memphis and a full year in our weight program and working on his shot could make him very dangerous next year as a 2. I assume at least 1 freshman outside of Okoro will also push for playing time.

That's one spot to watch. With Chuma likely out to start the year, Danjel and Okoro should have a month or more to both start and compete to remain starters after Chuma returns. It is a great problem to have either Okoro or Danjel as the first guy off your bench though.

Flanigan and Stretch are going to redshirt without question, unless some sort of unforeseen injury occurs. Both are talented prospects, but both are very raw and are in need some refinement.

Okoro will start from day one at the 3, and Williams will get some nice run at the 4 until Chuma is ready to play in late December/early January. Turbo Jones will get some minutes at the PG and CG spots in Pearl’s system, but I expect Harper, JM, Samir, and Johnson to get the majority of the playing time there, at least initially anyway. Bryce is a huge loss, but this next year’s team could be Pearl’s most talented group from top to bottom, and I can assure you guys the recruiting trail is heating up right now so after next year it’s going to be a reload situation, not a rebuild situation.

No mention of Danjel in there.

I had heard Mac was looking at transferring a month or two ago. Not sure what that was all about, but I hope he stays. For starters our system is a perfect fit for him. He's a small 5 who really can't play the 4 IMO. How many teams are going to play a guy his size at the 5? How many are going to play to his strengths like we do? But it's hoops and nothing shocks me.

My worry about this team isn't talent, it's those seniors and their grit along with Bryce being a guy who really got us going. Nobody's baskets fired up the rest of the squad like a couple of 3's from Brown. He was a huge ingredient in Boogin any time we Boog'd. Man I'm gonna miss that kid.

We all know Mac got into MIT so it’s possible that he’s graduated in 3 years. I’d guess he’d want to go somewhere that gave him an opportunity to play somewhere other than the five. Cuz he’s not an nba five. But still seems dumb imo. But we’ll see I guess

I’ll ask my aunt who teaches at Worth County if she’s heard anything

I’ve already braced myself for one mildly surprising transfer and one heart breaking transfer

Damn does Texas Techs entire team graduate? Not in the top 25?

I believe so. They had to replace four starters this year, and I think they did pretty much all of that through transfers. Plus they lose Culver, who is a stud. They lose a bunch off this team. Kinda why I want them to win it this year. I think they have less short-term staying power than any of the other three Final Four teams. They’re probably going to have to hit the grad transfer market again pretty hard.

Man that would suck if Mac left. I don’t believe it. I won’t.

I think Austin will go pro. Even if he’s not drafted.

I’d guess the most likely to transfer would be Jvon if Jared comes back.

I mean you never know with hoops but you could kinda see why guys left that did last season. This squad got too much boog in them to leave. All the croots seem fired up to boog.
