Sorry if I'm late, but didn't see anything posted about this. So Tate starts a thread with this long post about Jacobs that literally says nothing. And when I say it says nothing, I mean it says absolutely nothing worth reading. The most pointless post I've ever seen. Anyway, someone says something negative about it and he gets butthurt and proceeds to lock the thread after like 5 posts. You can't make this stuff up. The guy is grasping at anything and everything over there. It's pitiful.

Just playing Switzerland here. You might want to delete that post of his. It was posted on a premium board, and he had access to see it here. He could raise a stink about things being taken from there and posted here. I know many of you here don't like him, but you may not want to give him an easy, just (IMO) reason to try and shut the Greg down.

Good point, thanks

The Tate that took over Auburnsports however many years ago and the Tater today seem to be two different people. One seemed like a down to earth likable person who was occasionally long-winded. Today's version seems depressed and paranoid. I'm not sure if he just hasn't been able to handle the silliness of the internet, or if his personal tragedies are really affecting him. I've lost all anger towards him and now only feel sorry for him. I honestly think he needs to get out of this business and find something that makes him happy. Maybe it would bring the better version back.

agreed, i feel sad for him. no anger, just sadness that he has let a message board get so personal. I get that this is his livelihood, but you gotta know when to walk away from silly stuff. Focus on reporting and making sure the site works. If you're concerned with wanting to answer subscriber's questions, create a structure for that so that you don't have to monitor/respond to every rando or repetitive question that pops up.
if being a reporter and giving commentary is what brings you joy do that...just that. Don't burden yourself with being a hall monitor for the "in school suspension" crowd of the awbren sports interwebz, that's what al.com is for.

If he can't manage writing for a website that he owns/mods from the safe confines of his own living room, what do you suppose he could handle that would still pay the bills but not affect his personal life? Serious question. TIA

Yeah, I don’t think he fully understood the toxicity of the internet before he took the gig. Now he’s like fully immersed and is a different dude. Wouldn’t surprise me if he pulls a JLee and lets something totally inappropriate slip

This is a good question that I can't answer because I have no idea how you make a living as a writer in today's world. I do think not being the boss would help because he wouldn't need to "moderate" everything.

He needs to try and jump on TheAthletic train right now and write for them. No message boarding duties. Just write your articles and put em on twitter.

His problem is he can’t handle the community aspect of the bunker. He doesn’t know the difference between a friend and a subscriber

I felt this way until I found out he decided to lie about me to make himself look less petty. I still don't hate him but I no longer feel sorry for him.

I hope my post doesn't make it sound like I don't think he is making mistakes or that he shouldn't be blamed for them, but I've started viewing it as if he has developed some kind of mental illness. Does that make sense?

Oh, it absolutely does. I even reached out to him several times since I have family history with several different types of disorders and offered him sympathy and advice. I even offered to go full blown Indian Sweat Lodge with him to help reset his outlook but he would never take me up on it. Of course, all of this was before he allowed one of his employees to ban me for no reason and then turned it into a perm-ban and then started lying about me.

I do not know Jay and have never met him in person or even spoken to him by phone so anything I say should be taken with a grain of salt, but I think the guy needs to expand his career beyond auburnsports.com, which is sort of beneath him. As a writer, he is better than this sort of gig and actually writes as if he were writing for a magazine or writing a novel. Also, (IMO) his podcasts are quality enough that he could host a sports radio show that would be better than a lot of actual sports radio shows out there. I don't mean that he has super insight or special knowledge. Sports radio doesn't require any of that. But he has the on-air voice and talent to make that sort of thing work. I am not even an amateur shrink, but I have wondered if he sort of recognizes that he is playing below his level and something in his life is preventing a move and it is making him bitter or unhappy.

On the other hand, it could be something more fundamental. For someone who reads and writes for a living he has an amazing capacity to misunderstand what people write on the bunker. Gets his panties in a wad extremely easily over the strangest things.

This is just my personal impression from afar.

I think his laziness has turned into bitterness. He’s just as talented of a writer as some of the Big national guys like Mark Schlabach and such. But all those guys went beyond their gigs and did research and wrote books to help elevate their careers. Schlabach just wrote a big book on the Baylor scandal and has written others. That stuff doesn’t really take too much talent. It just takes drive and work ethic. Not sure Jay really has that as he’s constantly full of excuses for why their coverage can be lacking.

He could’ve turned that jet gate scandal into a career changer but he missed that opportunity hard

The guy creates content for Boog athletics. It’s not that bad a gig he’s just kind of an insecure dick. I mean it’s not a dream job but I wouldn’t say he should be doing any better.

No idea what he makes but it’s like pump out some articles, hire some intern to moderate the board. Interact with the posters a little. It’s easy guy acts like he’s traumatized over it. Get a grip dude.

I’d be out playing golf all day, write some articles on the can or in front of the TV. Go to some ball games whatever.

Yeah. I don’t think Jay is super talented or anything. But I’d say the same for guys like Pat Forde, Mark Schlabach and Stewart Mandel. Those guys just put in more work while JGT was stuffing his face with diabetes. You can just tell he’s bitter about it

How did he miss an opportunity?

What gets me is, with his psychology background, he can get pretty deep and can be pretty sharp with coaches and players and how they think and reasons why they do or say things...but then he can't read message board postings and their Intent and takes a lot of things the wrong way. I dont hate Jay like most you guys since I wasn't in all this but I have caught myself the last 5 years or so thinking he mistook what a poster was saying and got angry for no reason.

It's the Victim Mentality combined with high levels of inn security.

I just think if you break a pretty big story like the Jet Gate scandal, then you could probably parlay that attention into a better gig than being a beat reporter. Just guessing.

I also bet he could’ve gotten a small book for a bigger look into that story
I agree he missed the boat. Probably too worried about burning bridges to do an in-depth project re: the seedy underbelly of the Board of Yokels.

Yep. This has happened often. I have pointed it out to him on the bunker more than once. He never responds so I don't know if he ever understands.
