Starting Tanner Burns tomorrow night. Mize will throw on Friday, and we haven’t announced a starter for Sunday yet.
This is D1Baseball’s take on our chances to host.
“Finally, a pair of top 18 RPI teams in the SEC could still snag a host spot if they can finish strong. Auburn and Kentucky have the same problem right now: they’re both just 13-14 in the SEC. Auburn (No. 12) is stronger in the RPI than UK (No. 17), but the Wildcats are 15-12 against the top 50 and have won three marquee series against top-12 RPI teams (vs. Texas Tech, vs. Auburn, at Georgia). Obviously the top end of that resumé is impressive, but Kentucky’s case is undermined by its series losses to Alabama and Tennessee, the two lowest-RPI teams in the SEC. Still, if Kentucky can sweep its final series at Vanderbilt to finish 16-14 in the SEC, it should host. If it takes two of three to get to 15-15, it will have a shot, provided it can win some games in the conference tournament (because teams that don’t finish with winning records in their conference never host unless they can make serious noise in the conference tourney). Likewise, Auburn needs to sweep LSU at home to feel good about its chances, but taking two of three should give it at least a shot. But if both teams finish with the same SEC record, we’d give Kentucky a slight edge based on its head-to-head series win and its better high-end series wins.”
