OT: Cam Newton

Looked terrible first 3 games. Looked spectacular against Det and NE. Looked terrible last couple weeks. They had 3 OL go down yesterday. Their run game is complete trash which has always been a strength. I don't know he still looks a little rusty but as always I blame Shula and the other players for Cam's struggles.

I still can't believe they passed over both Fournette and Dalvin Cook to take the fooking little white kid from Stanford. He's like the Wild Bill Hastings of the NFL. I'm shook.

Yes terrible pick. Fournette went ahead of him but still. Could have traded down and acquired an additional pick. Get a stud at a real position. Take Cook later. Kamara. Go scout a stud like Kareem Hunt. Those backs are findable much later than the #8 pick.

That's right. I was misremembering due to some talk that I had heard/read that Carolina should have traded up to get that pick (not necessarily to get Fournette, but just to get that slot, though I don't know what the benefit would have been for jumping 4 spots when they wasted the #8 pick on Rudy 2.0).

Every time I watch them play he's either making a throw a half second too soon because of pressure or taking a hit.

This was a bad year to have a top 10 pick in such a terrible OL class, but they really need to upgrade that line. Running game helps pull that pressure off too.

The McAffrey pick followed by Samuel pick in the 2nd round reminds me of the guy in fantasy sports that loads up on the perceived position scarce players because they think they're outsmarting the league.

Hard to be great when the other 10 players on your side of the ball are complete garbage. I'm also positive that due to his OL being complete dog shit, he's developed a bit of a mental block and just can't seem to shake it enough to play well. I don't think I could either.

He's a professional that gets paid to get past that mental block. Some throws were just horrible and the white running back had a top 10 play because of the horrible thrown pass from Cam. Hopefully he can progress into a true professional before it's all said and done.

The tools and ability are there. He's already done something that less than 1% of NFL players who put on a uniform can do and that is win the NFL MVP.

They had an opportunity to trade down to the 20s and acquire another 1st rd pick. Inexplicably didn’t take it. Was unfortunately a weak OL class but could have got a good one in the 20s. Just totally botched the last couple drafts.

Cam is the ultimate streaky confidence player. Not sure that’s the best trait to have for a team leader and face of the franchise qb

McCaffrey isn’t the issue, and he’s fine as a top 10 pick in a vacuum... he’s just a terrible fit for Shula and that OL... with Olsen out, he’s the only reliable receiving threat on the entire team... McCaffrey is about 20th on their list of problems right now

what little success they’ve had this year has been because of defenses keying on McCaffrey... they’ve scored at least 3 tds because 2 or 3 defenders flowed with McCaffrey out of the backfield... and I doubt he’s had 5 carries all year where he got more than a yard past the LOS before getting hit... they’ve done an absolutely godawful job of getting him the ball in space - and throwing a poorly designed and even more poorly blocked screen pass 3 times a game doesn’t qualify as space

in theory, that pick made perfect sense, Shula has just done an awful job trying to use him

He's never going to be Tom Brady. Trying to make him a pure pocket passer and shred defenses that way is idiotic. He can improve as a passer sure. He can learn more about reading defenses. But he's actually come a long way in those areas. They have to scheme around what he's best at, but they are scared he'll get hurt more and more.

I also think they've tried to build too much around their 1st round RB and he's not what they think he is. They essentially drafted a 3rd down RB who catches passes and returns kicks. I might be tempted to move him to the slot FT and make him your version of Edelman. Their OL is trash and injured. They can't run the ball without Cam as a run threat now. It's a mess.

Yeah McCaffrey is ok. Has great hands, runs great routes. Does a lot for the O that's not in the stat sheet. They just could have done so much more with that pick.

And Cam has actually been running quite a bit this year. The pass pro has been suspect but the run blocking has been a complete abomination.
