OT: How many years did last night buy Gus?

Probably a long time.

Not trying to be too Boogtastic and optimistic here, but I think Jay Jacobs being canned was the best thing ever to happen to Gus. Gus could <hopefully> become a totally different coach now that that tumultuous relationship is over
That LSU loss is going to drag down this season for me, UNLESS we beat bama. And I’m minnessota on Gus evolving until I see us come into a season prepared for once.

1. That being said if he coaches like he did last night we’ll win a lot next year. Then we got Malik who’s gonna be a total stud.

Concerned about the crootin more than the corchin going forward. If we could get rid of Kodi and that oulde corching the DBs and replace with some solid crooters I’d feel pretty good.

Yeah I’m trying to keep my Boog in check but I think of a guy like Ron Rivera. He’s not elite or anything but he was on the verge of getting canned, started coaching to win and now he’s really solid.

Kodi has to be sent packing. Our WR play is abysmal. Part of that goes in to not running intermediate routes.

Yep. If Gus is finally gonna grow up and be an SEC HC he's gonna have to fix the crootin' part. CBs, OTs, DEs, Buck's, etc. gotta be at the top of the list erry year.

Yeah. I definitely think Gus is a goob, but I am excited that he’s put a emphasis on returning to finding legit dual threat QBs. Malik is gonna be a stud and I think Gatewood will be too.

On this note, it was said on tbb that JJ basically did nothing to curb boosters from trying to meddle with Gus and that's what made their relationship sour. Which really would play into the whole Gus paranoia thing.

It's probably a good idea to hold your optimism but I can definitely see where Gus' weird self would be two different people based on if PWM, etc are messing with him or not.

Yep, it got him next year. If he repeats early slow start losses and losses big games he’ll be back in firing range. When you repeat mistakes like Gus has, the big wins only buy you a short leash.

That said, yesterday was “Good Gus”. I wasn’t sure that guy still existed. I still don’t trust him and I’d still guess dumb Gus is gonna come out too often for him to be what he could be.

Exactly. We have to take a scientific approach, and we have just under 4 years worth of data that says he's incapable vs 1 year and one game that says he is. If he starts to prove, consistently, that he's going to be innovative and tailor things around our team's strengths, and also recruit at a high level, then I'll believe. Until then, he has to prove it.

This. If Gus coaches like good gus all the time we're unbeatable but he hasn't put a game like that together in 2 or 3 years....

All I know is that

I'm still not sure that peak AU with Gus can beat peak bama right now in most seasons. That is, both teams playing their best on that day. They shouldn't ever lose a game. Hell they probably should almost never see a close game till the playoffs. But "good Gus" gives them fits. See 10', 13' and 14' and I'd even throw in 09' where he hit big plays on them when nobody else was. His eccentric nature drives Saban crazy IMO, because Saban coaches his players up on situations and we don't do anything textbook in those situations. When it's clicking I think it gives them real problems.

We're unlikely to face peak bama this season. I think the injuries are actually a problem for them and they also just seem to be in a weird spot the last few weeks offensively. While I think they will get some of that worked out by the Iron Bowl, I doubt they can be at their peak so we've got a shot.

Too many. How he can **** up and lose to LSU in glorious fashion and beat the #1 team in the nation is beyond me.

Gus drives me nuts and I'm still nowhere close to be happy that he's our HC, but he does rank ahead of a lot of SEC coaches for me just because his highs are high enough to be fun. I mean what's Bert gonna do to make you excited? Sumlin hasn't done anything of note without Manziel and Butch Jones proved to be the worst of all. Gus will drive you crazy with weird decisions, but when he gets something clicking there are few like him. People still dismiss 2013 because of the 2 huge plays that won the late games, but they forget we fashioned an offense that was doing things on the ground vs SEC defenses that I had not seen in my lifetime. He truly is the idiot savant. The idiot part just continues to show up at bad times.

Now that sheer euphoria has worn off a bit I feel like I can look at Gus a little more clearly again. His job is obviously safe through this year and rightfully so.

That being said there was typical Gus through most of the first half. We finally hit that one deep ball and then our D and UGA imploding carried us. Give him all the credit for putting this one away but still has a lot to prove as a HC.

I still think that there’s a decent chance that he bolts to Arkansas. It’ll be his only chance to ever get his dream job, and he very well could take it.

But JJ getting canned decreases the odds of this to me. I think he hated, and rightfully so, being micromanaged by that bozo

This pretty much sums it up IMO

Arkansas just fires their AD. Maybe they hire a friend of Gus to help lure him away? This could get interesting

Gus has been a HC or coordinator in the SEC for 9 seasons now. He's one win away from reaching his 4th SEC Championship Game.

That's excellent by any standard.

I just wish he possessed the foresight (without having to be embarrassed for 2-3 seasons or lose games in inexplicable fashion) to understand he needs assistants that will keep his cupboard stocked with elite QBs, OL and DL.

If he were a good recruiter of QBs in his own right, he'd be well on his way to becoming our GOAT HC.

I would add that he signs too many OL and not enough DL if you aren't going to "process" them. If I counted correctly, we have 16 scholarship OL on the roster. That's kind of crazy to me. I liked what Tubs did and oversigned DL and then moved some of the ones that didn't pan out to OL. An OL who doesn't pan out is completely worthless.

Gus is not 1/10th of the talent evaluator nor program manager tubs was for most of his stint at Auburn.

This would be a weird, but probably better spot for AU to operate from now. Gus was so unpopular a few weeks back that you'd waive the buyout, or all but what covered some payout for the rest of the staff, so that you could get him out the door.

Now that he's got a huge win under his belt and may notch more, AU can enforce the full buyout or negotiate for a large % of it from Arkansas if they do actually come calling. And that puts you in a spot too where you can go interview his replacement options and basically know what the lay of the land is before you agree to whatever reduced buyout there is. (Arkansas likely cannot or will not pay a full $7 million buyout after having to pay Bert something like $5 million to go away and whatever they have to pay Long now)

Gonna take a lot for Gus to leave even with the heat he has felt. Starting over isn't all that fun. He wins enough this year then he can prob buy another 2-3 years of mediocrity. It is insane to think about but if he makes it to and wins against UGA in the SECG, then he will be 3-3 as boog head coach against GA with JJ being "the reason" he struggled in year 3-4. If he beats UA in the playoffs then he would be 3-3 against Saban. He would be able to ink another 20+ mil contract if it happened. Then why would he gaf about what people think of his meddling. Kind of crazy scenario fam.

He would be 6-6 against his biggest rivals, 2-3 vs LSU, 4-1 vs Ark, 4-1 vs OM, 3-2 vs Miss St, 3-2 vs TAMU, 22 - 9 against annual SEC schedule. Won 2 SEC Ships and made 2 Title appearances.

Never gonna happen but if it did .... everyone would have to "pay that man his money." 1$ to Teddy KGB

I think it only bought him into next year. And yes, he hasn't 'changed' until we come out in game one and act like we're prepared. Damn all of this stumbling through the first half of the season. And he's only doing good now because he was told to get the F out of the way and let Chip do his job.
