I posted this on tbb some time ago but thought it might be of some relevance now with all of the rumors of Gus to Arky floating around (though I seriously doubt that happens) and all of the hapless wishful thinking of pulling in bigtime name coaches...

Anyway, here's a C&P of my post below...

Looking at this list, without names, what does this tell you about the history of Auburn football? I've only listed the name of the school from which the coach actually coached immediately prior to coming to Auburn. Discuss...

Yes it’s truly sad in this dayonaisse how many Boogs are still so clueless. Would thumb their nose at a guy like Moose or even JIMBO when they’d both easily be the most accomplished corch we ever hired.

Could even make a case for a guy like Lane having more pedigree than anyone we’ve gotten. We’re good enough to hold onto a decent corch but we pick from scraps to fill the position historically.

Yeah. The trends definitely aren't in AU's favor to suggest that they'll hire a decent coach if they decide to get rid of Malzahn. The only hope they have is if they can come to some mutual agreement that lets Zan go to Arkansas without paying his buyout. No way AU pays out Zan's contract and then buys out another dude's at a big school. Zero chance.

I mean, when was the last time a school went out and outright bought a big name coach during his prime from a power5 school?

Probably Arkansas hiring Burt. I don't think Burt was that well respected but he had been to multiple rose bowls and had won the big 12 multiple times.

I thought it was pretty well understood that Wisky was still Alvarez's program even though Bert was the "HC" and Bert was trying to get out of his shadow and make a name for himself. I don't think that qualifies but it's probably as close as we'll get. I had forgotten about that whole situation. Good call.

USC with Lane sort of fits. Say what you will but they plucked him from UT. We ain't USC that's for sure.
True. They did do that. I guess you could call a single season at UT with a 7-6 record and being fired from the Raiders before that with a 5-15 record as being in one's prime.

Only big Power5 to Power5 moves in recent years I can think of:

James Franklin: Vandy to Penn State

Lane Kiffin: UT to USC

Rich Rod: WVU to Michigan

Franchione: Bama to TAMU

Tuberville: OM to AU

Nutt: Arky to OM

Then you have the move of a coach from the best nonPower5 to Power5 in his prime when Peterson left Boise for Washington.

Bert: Wisconsin to Arky

Sark: Wash to USC

Gary Anderson: Wisconsin to Oregon St

Riley: Oregon St to Nebraska

Cryst (sp?): Pitt to Wisconsin

Few more to add, that I could think of

true and like one of those worked out besides Cryst, but we all know Wisconsin will be good as long as Alverez is AD.
