Now the Gus is locked in for the foreseeable future, and providing Chip, Stidham and one of Kerryon or Pettway stays does Gus actually hit the ground running with his offense in the first game or is it another wait 3 games to figure out what we've got?

If Chip and Stidham are definitely back then I think it’ll be fine. The tug of war seems to be over at OC so I hope it doesn’t happen again.

We’ve had two years of Coach Worm and two years of needing 4-5 games to get the OL right. I’m guessing that’ll be an issue next season too

They started out really hot in the first half of 2014 so hopefully they can do so again.

Defense was putrid that year so maybe things will be different for 2018 team.

I think it's wait a few games and see what we've got. Even after we returned the key players from 2014 and added Duke, our offense sputtered against K State.

The Gus MO is basically to use spring and summer camp to have fun and build a false sense of confidence in our offense and figure out the offense in September as we go.

I picture summer camp like practice mode in NCAA football video games where you call a hail mary and then have the opposing defense run a field goal block then you just lob it in the air and let your wideout run 99 yards for a TD. Except Gus is handpicking defenders that are going to get fooled by his ingenuitive playcalling. And anytime it doesn't work out as Gus planned, he somehow blames Chip Lindsey and makes him do up-downs till he pukes.

I’m just wondering how much control Gus will try to regain from Chip now that he’s locked in for the foreseeable future.

You can make an argument for it going either way. Regardless, I think it’s obvious he trusts Chip infinitely more than he ever trusted Rhett. I’d love for one of the reporters to ask him about if Rhett’s former job of “watching the safeties” ever really meant shit

I’m not sure about that. I’d be willing to bet it’s more a function of him being forced to trust Chip in order to retain his job.

Jay Jacobs was fired mid season and AU was still running the Chip offense during the two biggest games of the year. I think he respects Chip. Rhett was clearly just his bitch

Yeah I seriously doubt Jacobs was the driving force behind that whole deal anyway.

I'm wondering if it will be the opposite. Gus seemed to lose his mind when it was nut-cuttin' time. Maybe the assurance of knowing he's not going to be fired at any moment will loosen him up some. God knows he needs it.

Very possible. Will be interesting to watch it all unfold regardless.

Yeah a very possible theory would be that Gus got word from Arkansas that he was wanted and knew he was good to go either way and coached loose and free because he felt less pressure. That the pressure of being out of work, even with a buyout was humiliating and knowing he had a fallback make him confident.

Just think we’ll have a good idea if he’s actually adapted or not after 4 games.

We’ll see. But assuming Stidham stays, I think we’ll see the exact same offense next season. Maybe even give Jarrett a little more autonomy too
I think Stidham stays for sure, and unless Pettway has got into something we aren't aware of, he is back as well. I also feel like KJ might feel like he might have something to prove (don't ask me what, he just seems like a finisher to me), and will stand up and be a true leader on next year's squad. My hopes are that the offense is in place to use Stidham's strengths and maybe we can get ahead of the game on tutoring MALIK into the next NM14. Just come up with an OL, and turn some sidebacks ($1 to SHUG) into safetys and I think it sets up nicely.
Of course there is always

Nope. Won't happen under Gus.

Not sure Chip will be around next season anyway if he gets a decent offer. He was jerked around by Gus.

Uga shut down the screens that burnt them before. That's good coaching.

Once they shut those down and knew Kerryon was a shell, Gus took over, IMO.
Believe what you want. It really doesn’t matter. Both Chip and Gus called a gameplam that failed. They’re both at fault

I don't know if Gus took over play calling or not but his piss poor personnel management led to KJ being injured and zero backups ready to step in. Also, OL isn't championship level. There were plays called that had an over the middle route and Stidham didn't have time to hit them.

At times the H-back and running back have to block. There is only 5 OL and when they blitz 6/7 it is the running backs and H-backs job to recognize. They also have to hear the protection.

Chip has called the plays all year. Big problem has been the "menu" of what plays could be called and when Gus has told Chip to run the ball.

I'm fine with it. Gus has the potential to be a good coach as long as he has a QB. He's going to have to stop running his players Into the ground by seasons end like KJ. I know his hands were tied with pettway Being but still. Why recruit the others if you don't trust them? And he got super lucky pettway was even good bc he wasn't even recruited as a RB.
But maybe with more money to pay off field personnel and more money to get better assistant or 2 we can hire a great recruiter and not miss on key positions.
