As one of his biggest critics, given the level of competition he was showing out against pre-injury two years ago, what are Boog faithful here expecting him to bring to the table for us?

Admittedly, I hope I’m very wrong about this kid and he lives up to the hype many have for him. This team is one more dynamic player/shooter from being a legit Top 5 team, IMO.

If he steps in and is capable of shooting 35-38% from 3, creates a bit off the dribble, moves without the ball, and can finish at the rim, I think it’s us and Tennessee vying for the SEC title and a spot in the Final Four.

I feel like this is close to the bare minimum that we can expect. When I think about how much improvement Bryce and Jared (but also guys like Horace and Malik) have had under Bruce I'm cautiously optimistic. Given those guys have had a lot more playing time, but the good news is we will start to see this Saturday.

The bench has been pretty ass this season so far at scoring points. So regardless of if he starts or not, the bench just got a TON better at being more threatening whether it’s Samir or Danjel being the 6th man

I think it will take him a few weeks to even get to where he can compete for a lot of minutes. I think he will get worked in slower than Austin was. Also, I still don't think Bruce has setteled on his rotations and bringing another guy in it will take Bruce some time to figure that out. Players like to know their role and until Bruce figures that he and a few others might not understand their role now.
He needs to make a few shots but this first game, especially, I need to see maximum effort on defense.

Good Malik contribution. Which has been really fantastic.

Hard to say though. I mean in theory he’s a longer more agile Malik with better shooting and ball handling abilities. He’s a 2nd team all conference talent so if he plays to that level by middle of SEC play that would be pretty damn sweet.

Defensive improvement. That's what I expect most. He's going to be back at a more natural position for him, and I expect him to fall in line with everyone else and play relentless, hard-nosed defense. We have enough scorers and contributors that foul issues shouldn't be a problem. So we should see no defensive hesitation from him. He's a great shooter and can get to the rim, so I don't worry much about his offense. But he needs to be a better defender.

I do worry about him based on the weight loss tweet he sent out a couple weeks ago. For a guy dying to get back on the court and contribute, having to be told by Bruce to lose weight concerns me a bit. I would've thought he'd be in peak condition right now and doing everything within his power to be ready to go on day one. Maybe I'm reading too much into that, but it just didn't seem like someone who has been putting in the work this offseason. A lot of people pointed out in the exhibition game that he looked heavy and slow. His tweet seemed to confirm what those people noticed.

Here’s a read from the fat man on 247

I do think Danjel is gonna end up loggin some mins at the 4. Makes too much sense our O totally sputters when Horace comes in for Chuma.
But he will play both spots in an offense that rotates players among positions on the floor like a child running from toy to toy on a Christmas shopping spree.

Ugghhh. This analogy made me cringe out loud

I expect him to be a major contributor off the bench. I believe he and Wiley will come off the bench the whole season, but get starter minutes. Danjel will give us a long body on defense that “potentially” can Guard 2-4 and some 1’s. Offensively he is the 3rd best shooter from 3 on the team. His freshman year he did not have the talent around him that he does now. I fully expect Danjel to play a huge role in our quest to making an elite 8 run.

I imagine the play of Dunbar and Doughty have helped with that too. Purifoy can play both, but had those two guys not played as well as they have so far, I imagine we'd be pretty pressed to get DP back and focused mostly on that 3 role. Getting him as a flex 3/4 will be nice because we can run a lot of different lineup combos at teams while not really sacrificing much on either end.

I think it's gonna take him around 8-10 games to really get into the flow of everything. Doesn't mean he can't flash a few games, but for him to really be at it on both ends and flowing with it it's gonna take that long.

His defense is a concern to me. It was BAD before. No focus, didn't know where to be/how to help. Just brutal. It's got to be up to par. We're playing much better on that end IMO. Him being bad could really mess with that. There is no reason he shouldn't be good there with his length and athletic ability.

The weight thing concerns me just because I wonder how dedicated he is to getting it done. You'd think, as someone else stated, that after all the drama and being held out this long he'd be the most in shape, focused, full of desire dude on the roster outside of maybe Wiley. The idea that he may have put it on cruise control for a bit gives me some pause.

I don't think the weight situation is as eye opening as some of you guys do. It could very mean that he was a bit lazy or something, but I also 100% guarantee that he was on completely different fitness schedule than the rest of the team. He did summer workouts and still practices with the squad, but I guarantee that he didn't do all the cardio needed to get into game shape and absolutely didn't do all the work that they did to prepare for 3 straight games in maui. He's probably been on a steady routine and then last week or so they amped it up to get him in game shape

It's going to take some time for him to get comfortable, and find his role on this particular team. But when he does, he'll be fantastic. He's a talent. And Bruce will find a way to properly utilize Danjel. He'll alleviate some of the inside struggle.

Danjel dropped 22 on a Purdue team that went on to win 27 games. He had 15 boards vs UConn. He dropped 27 in back to back games and was averaging 18/game through the first 9. Regardless of who we were playing, he was our best player in OOC play that year. Through 9 games, he shot between 4 and 10 FTs per game in 8 of those 9. He hurt his ankle in the 10th game and his FT's and overall production fell off precipitously, not having a single trip to the line between games 15 and 19. I think its pretty clear the injury had a huge impact on him as he attempted to become a spot up 3 point shooter after that.

On expectations, I think it will take a few games for him to work his way back into things. By SEC play, I expect him to be starting with a floor of averaging 12/game with considerable upside. If he commits to attacking the basket, his upside is enormous given his athleticism and 90% FT shooting.

The best part of getting him back is that we don't need anything from him. This is already a championship caliber team. Bruce has the luxury of being patient with Danjel and working him back in as slowly as necessary. If he doesn't play up to his ability level, he can be a role player off the bench. Having another dude who can come off the bench and shoot 36%+ from 3 and be automatic from the FT line is a big addition when you already have a great team.

I knew this but to be reminded of how good Danjel was before that rotten trash bum Saiz harmed him has me so excited about the possibilities.

One thing is for certain boog nation is excited to have his FT shooting capabilities back. I mean the man can make 20 in a row and doesn’t even need his pappy wacking him with a stick in the driveway to do so.
