he was a bad businessman and took care of the people that got him the job, but all three top sports are top 15 programs right now.

Yore first sentence answers it. Just bc you do ok at part ignorant your job doesn’t make you good at it. Plus, how many chances didn’t he get to hire and fire coaches? Too many to not count against him.

You are better than this, OP. The GREG is better than this.

Jay Jacobs became AD in 2004. 13-14 years later Obbern has a season that doesn't look like a dumpster fire somewhere in the AD.

I agree, but you know how long it takes to change the mindset and culture? A long time. I still think nick saban was the best thing to happen for AU. Changed our culture.

He did some good things that people don’t give him credit for. I think Chizik (and his buyout), Barbee, and Golloway are too hard for people to forget.

My main problem with him is he let the AD get too bloated and too top-heavy, when we should’ve been using the SEC Network money to have some great facilities.

I do agree with the premise that he made some pretty good hires of late though. Gus is one of the better coaches in the conference, even if he’s not worth 7 million and can be an absolute idiot. Bruce and Butch are both really good too.

Reasoning for the AD being bloated was due to him taking care of the people that hired him.

Auburn is auburn in spite of Gus.

Bruce fell in his lap

He hired Sonny Golloway AND Barbee.

Bad troll is bad.

I’m not even going to read the rest of this thread.....but Golloway AND Barber were good hires on paper. That can’t be reasonably argued. Continue the hate.

BYU hiring Lane Kiffin is a good hire on paper. The AD is responsible for being aware of what the situation/culture is at their school and spotting potential problems.

I’m not trolling. Barbee was a bad hire because compliance wouldn’t let him cheat. Gene was picked by the PTB.
Much more Under Armour contract signed under Jacobs' leadership, imo and hiding it from Barbee when hiring him. Even though he's a petulant child, that was a really stupid hire or decision one given the circumstances.

Nope. Both were horrible hires under the situations hired into. Other people take over decision making and we get BRUCE and Butch who are better coaches and better fits.

For some reason I don’t remember you screaming “shitty hire” after either one. Awful comparison. You know it. But I said reasonably....

Agree.

An AD was hired, who spent his first 5 years trying to make things as difficult as possible for the HFC - at a Football school. In fact, that was part of his job description given to him by the people who hired him.

He was hired after being incompetent at running a small part of that AD. He was hired after a "Nationwide Search" where numerous Superstar quality interested candidates were not given consideration. He spent his tenure promoting the incompetent and hiring ever more people and expanding the Org Chart because he and his chosen underlings were not able to fulfill the duties of their positions, so other people were hired to fulfill those duties.

Under his tenure, the football and basketball teams both had the worst seasons in school history, and indeed some of the worst in SEC history. The Football team did win a Natty, using 90% contributors recruited by the coach he ran off. The baseball team was seldom to never competitive. The basketball team had 1 good season, but due to his ineptitude at scheduling and politicking, became the first P5 conference school in history with 22 wins and a 10 league wins to be snubbed by the NCAA Tourney. He fired that coach a year later, despite never delivering promised facilities improvements (worst in major conference Bball), and his having been hampered by the start in recruiting by past mismanagement of Compliance.

Under his tenure, the most successful coach in school, state, and possibly SEC history resigned without ever having promised facilities improvements delivered. Most of his coaching hires were abject disasters, the main qualification among most being some nebulous tie to the school in the past. Of those with no previous tie to the school, most were grossly incompetent and/or proved have some bizzarre personality disorder. One was a legit deragnged psychopath, who he never bothered to vet. Most of our programs became mired in off the field scandal, serious scandals involving Title IX, sex assaults, serious legal trouble, rather than minor recruiting infractions. Most of our programs fell way behind the competition in facilities.

He engineered a bold masterstroke in hiring Bruce Pearl, who absolutely did Not "fall into his lap". But his tenure will be most remembered for the absolute reign of the GOB Network, and the plundering of our AD for cronyism and personal profit.

Jacobs made Tuberville sign 18 non qualifiers in the 2007 class? Lulz!

Please explain how BRUCE did not fall into his lap.
