I almost listed Quinten Groves and if I had a top 10 he'd be there. I remember calling my dad after the Ole Miss game in 2004 and he was like "I know you loved that Groves guy"

He was just a genuinely great dude... Both when he played at AUBURN and after he'd come back to campus as an NFL player, he never acted like he was important and always welcomed folks to come talk and hang out. He was one of my favorites when I was in school for sure. Along with the Irons Bros and my man Tristan Davis.

We ran into Q Groves at an A-Day game a few years back. My dad played tennis for AUBURN 40+ years ago, and when Q realized that he had been an athlete at Auburn I swear he talked to him for 10-15 minutes about how cool that was an how important and meaningful it is to him to be an AU alumni and former athlete. The fact that he cared to talk to a mid-50s former tennis player and acted like he was no different than Bo Jackson was pretty damn cool to me. He'll always be one of my personal favorites.

I object to Neiko Thorpe being on these lists. Dude is still playing in the league. Has to be a complete coaching failure IMO.

Jeramye pretty well covered it, but I just can’t list individual players... I understand those who did - but it’s not their fault they’re not good enough, and corches are unable to recruit or corch up someone to take their spot - or scheme away from obvious liabilities

the only player I came close to listing was Prechae Rodriguez... if he hadn’t fumbled in the 2005 BAMA game we’d have won by 50... we were up 21-0, driving to make it 28-0 in the first quarter... Gorgeous Al was in a blackout zone dialing up shit like an advanced A.I. Bill Walsh... then Prechae fumbled and Tubs went into the Tubbershell’est Tubbershell he ever Tubbershell’d... we sacked Brodie 11 times, everyone had a grand old time... and it still gnawed at me leaving the stadium that we missed our chance to give them the worst beating in the history of the series

I understand the game very well, and Neiko got beat a lot.

Neiko got beat a lot, but Neiko at S got blamed a LOT for other guys blowing coverages and completely not understanding where their help was (or being incapable of playing to the help). I'm not saying he was perfect, but I listened to guys call him every name imaginable when I 100% was sure he had no way to make the play based on the call we had in.

Once a player starts getting the wrath of your fanbase they get all of it even when they don't deserve it. Someone wanted to fight me one year because Ziemba got a flag and the dude said he got 4 of them every week. That was the year Lee cut it down and had gone like 4-5 weeks without a penalty and had been solid. The guy was so mad that I pointed it out his wife had to tell him to shut up and sit down.

Actually he had an awesome true freshman year and then Chizik got here. Coincidence? Couldn't be.
Neiko Thorpe sucked every year he was at Auburn. His block punt TD in a loss vs Kentucky in 2009 was cool though.

Bama made an example of him in 2008, his supposed “stellar” freshman season.

He was picked on by every single passing team we played for 3-4 years.

And the “still playing in the league” comment doesn’t matter to me. Tre Mason ISN’T still in he league but no sentient being on earth would reasonably argue Neiko was even in the same galaxy as a player.

I don't hate any of these youngsters. Just going off my heat level when watching them play.

Josh Wallace would be another. Apparently a great guy, but we can't have a PG out there who shoots like a grandma

I liked Neiko even though he did get beat some. I think part of the animosity about him is that people expected him to be a lot better because of his size and speed than he had the ability to be. Him still being in the NFL has a lot to do with how his size and ability is coveted.

Also, I think a redshirt year could have helped him a bit. Also, I'm not that sure just being on a roster is an incredible accomplishment or anything. He's a strained hamstring away from being cut and never heard from again.

This comment shows you really don't know wtf you're talking about, but you've shown that in multiple threads about multiple sports so it isn't anything new.

I'm still convinced that Neiko had low blood sugar and that he was good in spurts, but his performance degraded quickly when taking too many snaps. In the NFL, he plays fewer snaps and looks more energetic. I like Neiko.

Top 5 in last 20:

Least fav 5:

I agree with him. Thorpe/Lipscomb was awful at Auburn on some occasions. He's part of some of the worst pass defenses in Auburn history. I think the kid had more talent, but it took 6 years to come out I guess. Chris Davis is the same. He was a well below average cover guy. He was a good returner though. Since I am piling on..... I can't leave out Zach Etheridge. Zach was a below average everything imo......team defensive passing numbers pretty much back my assertion.

He was pretty good in run support. Granted, run supporting DBs are a dime a dozen.

Liger's problem is that nothing is relative in his eyes. I am not saying that he never got burned as a true freshman, but that was a phenomenal year for a true freshman. Our secondaries got roasted all 4 years Chizik was here. You can't convince me that it was all talent, especially when multiple guys went on to play in the league. I don't know if it was a Chizik problem, a Roof problem, or a position coach problem but we greatly under-achieved in the secondary.

I expected so much more. Not all his fault, but his highlights at Auburn consisted of chaulkie time brilliance and catching tennis balls in gym shorts.

Cooper Wallace fumbling the ball when he was not touched versus Florida in 02, which allowed Grossman to TKO us in overtime, still pisses me off. Caddy breaking his leg that game and Tubs calling a fake punt inside the 20 didn't help either. Still the only football game I've attended at the Swamp... I went to the bball game last week, maybe I need to stop attending AU sporting events in Gainesville.

What was ever “phenomenal” about Neiko Thorpe as it relates to Auburn?

My problem is conversing with people who don’t understand that a horrible career player who has NFL measureables was still horrible at Auburn, regardless of what happened afterwards.

And it wasn’t like he was a bright spot amongst a bunch of bums. He was the kid who was picked on the most in our secondary his entire time here.

LOL, bruh you literally don't have a fvcking clue. Of course you're the same guy who thinks Carlton Davis isn't any good, so your opinion is basically shit. You're the negative version of rice, just some guy relentlessly spewing bad opinions on the internet.

Tommy Trott was like 3 years older than me and went to my rival high school. Like he torched MA and I was so disappointed that he sucked at AU.

Same with Bart Eddins. I played football against Bart and he was a fuggin monster by 7th grade. Like for real, 250 pound RB that Trinity used to run all over us pre pubescent white kids. I was disappointed he sucked bc I had played against him a lot and knew him pretty well

So these guys are by no means on my hate list. Just wished they’d have lived up to their Rivals ranking bc I knew them.

Same with Jalen Harris. Wish he’d be good bc he went to St James but whatever

Small world but I volunteered for a team that played against Bart in 7th grade. We had a LB that could tackle him but that was about it. It was pretty comical.

I played against Brett in high school and he buried our punt returner and the guy never played again.

Okay so after a period of consideration (and I'm cheating by throwing a few groups in)

FAVE FIVE
Cam
Fairley
2004 AU football
2017-18 AU hoops
NM14

BAN THEM FROM CAMPUS
Jay Jacobs
Tony Barbee
Tim Jackson
Chuck Person
aler
@Jay G. Tate(nevermind he's not an auburn man #MOOT)
seconded with one addition

Favorite:

1. CAM (no explanation needed; unlikely to ever change)
2. BRUCE (see reasoning above)
3. Narshall (stone cold killer; so under appreciated)
4. Chris Porter (the human highlight reel)
5. Tre Mason (carried us on his back the 2nd half of 2013; deserved to score the natty winning TD)

Least favorite:

1. Jay Jacobs/Tim Jackson (cronyism, racketeering, glad-handing, etc...)

2. Gene Chizik (just a horribly stupid, yet arrogant person who steered our program off the tracks in an historically bad way)
3. Gus Malzahn (imbecile, short-sighted, dense, terrible recruiter, terrible roster manager, terrible developer, terrible play-caller, favorites-player, etc...)
4. Jake Holland/Neiko Thorpe (worst multi-year starters in Auburn history)
5. JB Grimes (back for a 2nd stint to completely ruin our OL and overall offense... WOAT recruiting OL coach @ Auburn... yet, surprisingly lauded as an exceptional “tactician” by boogs everywhere for some reason)
Move narwhal ahead of Bruce, move Jake Holland above gus otherwise spot on for me.

Yeah I can't get down with that one or even the Jake Holland stuff. You guys are misplacing your anger. Thorpe was better than most people realized too....I can't count how many times he got roasted by the fans for something completely not his fault. Example...we had 2 TD passes in one game where Thorpe was the last guy in the screen but the entire idea of the defense we called was for our CB to force the WR inside and whoever it was completely whiffed and Thorpe is left covering a spot that he was never intended to cover in the design of that call. But I'd hear fans all around me a JHS calling him every name in the book. His pro career tells you that there is simply no way he was that bad at AU and that most of the plays we went off on where issues where he was trying to clean up someone else's mess. We also have terribly dumb fans who think CB's being in perfect coverage but Alshon Jeffery types making plays against them means they are garbage. I'm not sure some people even understand the sport they watch.

My hated list wouldn't include any player unless the player ratted us out to the NCAA or committed some kind of heinous crime like rape or maybe holding other students up at gunpoint or like bama players...playing the knockout game and jumping people 1/3rd of their size. It would all be coaches, administrators and pretty much anyone in Jacobs circle for the last decade plus. If Jake Holland wasn't good enough to play SEC football it's not his fault someone kept putting him on the field every Saturday. Place the hate on that person, not the kid who just wants to play. I mean if AU asked me to be the starting QB tomorrow I'm playing and I don't care if I throw 15 INTs a week you aren't getting me to take myself off the field and y'all are lying if you say you'd give it up.
Tldr but Holland straight up knew he was bad for the team but was getting to play because of his daddy and did it anyway to the detriment of everyone else and in my opinion that IS his fault. ****. That. Pussy.

I don't know this story. What did his dad have to do with it?
