Season Long SEC Football Discussion Thread

Auburn schedule every year sets up for 2-3 games that determine where AU is in realtion to it’s rivals

Even years @UGA @UA
We tend to whip LSU at home.

Odd years @LSU Hosting UGA Hosting UA

Gus being unable to win these games consistently has made me ngaf about winning any other game. Hard to get excited about being 3rd best at anything. I could watch the Cam / NM brand of offense anyday all day. This Stidham / Todd offense is boring as fvck.

Second year of Chip and the second year of Stidham. The optimist in me thinks both of those factors will help the team start off better offensively than it has in the past under Gus, and I certainly don’t see the Washington game as a certain L.

The problem is that Chip wants to throw the ball, and we are probably not going to be better at doing that than Washington and the other option is that Gus has his hands all over the O and that shit won't work with Stidham. Hope I'm wrong.

Also, I know it was the end of the game, but this is still an impressive sack from Big Cat here. Got high hopes for him and TD Moultry to not just fill Jeff Holland's shoes but be better.

also, how long are Stove and Hastings supposed to be out? The whole season? Or do they expect them back for a handful of games? I think Stove can be replaced on those speed sweeps by Devon Barrett (even though I think Stove is a baller), but we're gonna miss Hastings for sure

I truly feel sorry for you guys that can't enjoy AU football. Yea, I want us to win every game but being a 'realist', that just ain't gonna happen....although 1993 and 2010.....Anyway, life is full of highs and lows and cheering for your sports team is no different. When some accept the FACT that every other team is trying to get better and win as well, maybe you can enjoy watching what is the best the best game in the world and we're lucky to be fans of the best school. And although he frustrates me at times, we have a great coach and an even better man at the helm. War Eagle.
You left out 2004 & I’m not gonna pile on here like others, but how many years has the Sons of Saban & CO. been undefeated since 1993 versus how many Nation Championships? It’s not always about being unblemished, like it’s not always about being State Champions or Division Champs or Conference Champs...

Pretty sure it’s assumed they’re done for the year. May be wrong though.

Ryan Davis was a fvcking animal at the end of last season. Dude gets into open space and he is trouble.

I think they would definitely be done if not for the new redshirt rule. Not sure if they both have red shirts available or not.

Probably the worst thing about Gus to me personally is that he’s absolutely killed my preseason optimism. There’s always that ‘we’ll fvck it up somehow’ cloud hanging over my fandom and it sucks

don’t remember seeing you around here much so allow me to say that trolling is frowned upon here... all of us have moderated our e-personas out of mutual respect for one another and acknowledgement that it’s really only necessary on lesser boards... I mean, I even use the quote function here for zod’s sake

please remember that for future posts

It’s worse when we’re playing a team game one with a very competent coach who will have his team ready before week 5.

Legit question....When has Auburn football EVER legitimately not “fvcked it up somehow” in yore lifetime?

I didn’t realize this was exclusive to Gus

I think Gus fuggs it up way less than Tubervile. It's just that Tommy had a way of winning big games to redeem himself and make fans forget how shitty the season actually was.

We've not had a coach in my lifetime that could win with expectations. Dye, Tubbs, Gus all failed miserably with their highest expectations.

Seems like our fug ups are directly related to Gus’s stupidity more than the norm.

Fair

But I cannot remember one season in my lifetime where we went in with high expectations and actually achieved them

Seems like only times we have high level success we come out of nowhere

We definitely laid some eggs I just don’t remember the in game stupidity Gus displays. I guess I give Gus credit for not having many of those WTF games where we don’t show up but then he’s over there dialing up ridiculous nonsense to blow a W.

Their win % are basically identical but Tubs had some heartbreaking Ls where Gus has mostly been charmed in close games.

Dye started 5 or 6 in '83 so that's our best performance I guess, even then we lost our second game and dropped outside the top ten. We started 1 and 2 in most polls the next two years and lost 8 games.

Jetgate should definitely have happened. It failed. Tubbs won/stole the iron bowl that year, and he stayed on for another 4 years.

Gus should have been gone but won the iron bowl and got an extension that will keep him here for another 4 years.

Both coaches were/are mediocre but at least wingnut has personality.

Agree with this. Only difference is that Gus actually has the potential to be elite if he’d only stop making amateurish moves with personnel, both on the field and on his coaching staff.

I'm a little torn on this. If you look it at Tubs time we were 100% on an upward trajectory until he tried to let somebody else run Petrino's offense (1999-2002). Up until that point, he had not made a mistake IMO. It was a big mistake for sure, but was that a "fire your coach" level mistake or an over-reaction by the powers that be? I'm not sure.

The only real upward trajectory shown during that period was Petrino. He left and Tubbs showed the same stubbornness of loyalty to his staff that he did in 2008 when he brought in Franklin and ham strung him.

In retrospect, Tubs staff (save for a few temporary studs here and there) was largely abysmal.

That simply isn't true. If you look at the talent level when he took over in 1999 vs the talent level in 2003, he had vastly improved the roster from top to bottom. We had also gotten back to being one of the best defenses in the SEC.

I agree that his stubbornness in 2008 got him deservedly fired, but I think that when he made the decision in 2003 to try and run Petrino's offense it was an attempt to not change the offense on Campbell again - not an attempt to show loyalty to the staff. I was in school at AU at the time and had a friend who was a GA, and that's what he told me.

That coaching staff was just old school. They were far more coaches than they were recruiters and Pete Carroll and Nick Saban changed the game when it came to recruiting. I also think recruiting getting so big during that time period meant there were less "diamonds in the rough" for Tubbs to swoop in and get by just being the best offer.

Tubs was never going to survive the change that happened nationally with recruiting, but I think the fact that the powers that be still wanted him gone even after 2004 hurt Tubs/Auburn and he never really had a chance.

That and the annual duck hunting trips while flirting with Arkansas through Sexton were embarrassing to us.

Those sagas told me that Tubs viewed the Auburn program like he was doing it a favor by coaching it and winning 9 games a year, while never consistently being a threat to win a championship. He viewed Auburn as a regional program that should be content to beat a down Alabama, steal a game or two against a highly ranked opponent and leave the championship winning to the LSUs, UGAs and UFs of the world.
