Tough road matchup. UK probably playing extra motivated after getting swept at Arky and starting off the SEC season 0-3.

Great hitting team in a hitter-friendly park. They hit 7 HRs in their last game against Xavier. They have 3 really good power hitters and several other very good hitters in the lineup.

One frontline starter in Hjelle, who was the SEC pitcher of the year last year. They’re missing a starter, Zack Thompson. So their starting rotation is in flux. They got really touched up at Arkansas last week. Their bullpen is good, but there isn’t a ton of depth.

It’s supposed to be cold cold all weekend. Chance of snow and/or rain a couple days too. Going to be an interesting series.

Greenhill (mono) and Mitchell (forearm tightness) still being held out. Means that Burns could start game 3 or be used to finish out a game if needed.

Yeah that sucked balls. Probably shouldn't have listened to @Slippin Jimmy and just let Mize throw the 9th.

Really needed that ball Jarvis hit to fall. With this group in their park, you can’t really feel safe with a 1- or 2-run lead. Their lineup is built to their ballpark, and they’re a deep pop fly from getting right back in any game.

Mize was a little over 100 pitches for the night. And he’d had two long sits in the sixth and seventh. I liked the change. Having Greenhill means we would’ve gone to him in the 9th versus trying to stretch Coker a second inning, which probably would’ve been more beneficial in that spot.

Yikes

But Mize has 34 strikeouts and zero walks in sec play(I think). That’s pretty good.

For sure. Mize wasn’t the problem last night. He went through one little rough patch where he allowed 3 straight 2-out, 2-strike hits (the last two were 0-2 hits) and gave up that lead-off HR. But he was salty after that and get getting better and better as the game went on. He was sharper in the 5-7th last night than the 1-3rd IMO.

The biggest downside to Mize’s pitching style in college is the amount of strikeouts he racks up elevates his pitch count, and it’s not really a downside at all. If he could induce 2-3 more contact outs instead of strikeouts, he’d be a threat to go all 9 every outing and stay below 100 pitches while doing so.

Man what a team we have in the makings here. That said, we might have the toughest schedule of all time. We could be at top ten team, yet end up .500/.650 in league play. SEC is just brutal.

If we go .500 in SEC play, I still think we can host a regional given how strong our conference schedule is and how well we played OOC.

So we choked again huh
Have the handsome studs of the hard court done taught you nothing? Never go full boog too early. Gotta play mortal a few times during the regular season or tired pants will be shat when it counts. I actually look forward to Mize walking consecutive batters at some point in the near future and our bats going cold in Tuscaloosa. Gonna wear out those Noles and Clemson Tigers in the diamond dance.

Have we realized yet that Coker isn’t gonna get it done for us when it matters?

He’s just simply not good enough.

He had been pretty much been pitching great before his 2nd inning of work on Friday.

Hopefully we can get them back pretty quickly. Coker gave up another last inning 2-run HR today that brought them within one.

He’s just not mentally strong enough, imo.
Yeah we need them back bad. Greenhill is nasty and Mitchell is about the only lefty on the staff that doesn't terrify me being out there. Having both out hurts. Coker has left way too many hanging this weekend. He's gonna have to be better as long as they are out

Burns got no help today out there. Plate ump squeezing the shat of the pitchers, and basically 3 errors allowing the 2 runs to give up the lead. Very ugly game going down right now

This is where Mitchell and Greenhill being out really hurt

Well, my thought going into today was to salvage one game and not get swept. We did that, and thankfully we did it in game one because our bullpen ran out of gas. As a pitching all weekend, we really seemed affected by their power. It felt like we tried so hard to avoid mistakes that we stayed behind in counts and gave them good hitting counts all weekend (minus Mize's 7 innings). Hoping this week was a sobering week and these guys can bounce back from this tough road stretch.

I think I'd tweak the lineup going into this week. Holland and Jarvis are our two hottest hitters right now. Venter, Wright, and Williams are all still having solid ABs, even if not showing the numbers. Would consider putting Williams in the 3-hole and Venter/Wright 4/5 to mix up the rigthy/lefty look a little. Then move some guys like Anthony and Conor Davis down just to let them see something different for a couple games to hopefully get them going again.

Holland
Jarvis
Venter
Wright
Williams
Estes
Anthony
Julien/Ingram at DH
Davis/Ward/Johnson/whoever is in LF

In our 6 SEC games, we’re hitting .213 and have an ERA over 5 and blew Mize’s Friday night start, and we still are 3-3 in those games. There’s a lot of bad in there, but there’s some positives too.

What is our OBP? Seems like while we have not generated a lot of hits, we have gotten on base a decent amount.

.340. Solid considering we’re not hitting well. 25 BBs and 9 HBPs in those 6 games. But with those numbers and a solid BA, we’d probably be 5-1 in SEC play. That’s almost 6 free base runners per game.
