Still not valuing possessions leading to almost 20 turnovers. It’s very frustrating that our guys try to force 1 on 3 breaks instead of pulling the ball out and setting up “something”. I say “something”, because I don’t know if we run a style of offense. Majority of the time it is pick and roll, or pick and pop. I saw a trend 3 weeks ago that we continue to see and if it doesn’t change we’ll be in the NIT.
idk what offense people expect us to run... I saw us run sets to get Mac the ball on the block in back to back possessions and I was begging for him to pass it out, but you also can’t really ask a 6’8” guy to not try to score when he catches the ball 7-8 feet from the basket... we ran multiple reversals, screens, all 5 guys moving and touching the ball, and ended up with - presumably - a “good” shot... they didn’t double - guarded him 1 on 1 and begged him to shoot - and he threw 2 bricks off the backboard... so since the possession ended with a bad miss, no one notices or cares about anything we did to get the ball to that spot - it’s just “we don’t run any offense”... so a possession or 2 later when Jared takes a bad 3 - everyone can point to that and say “see... we just play street ball” - even though the EFG% on that shot (as awful as it may be) is still better than most other shots we’d get considering the rest of the guys on the court
we have a lot of “wasted possessions” the same way you lament a quick pull up 3 or Bryce dribbling the air out of the ball... when the sad reality is, Bryce or Jared taking a bad shot in a wasted possession is better than anything we’re getting from Samir or Mac or Danjel or JVon or Horace in a half court offense
look at our roster and tell me, when the game slows down and we’re being guarded closely in the half court, what “good” shots do you want us to take? and then tell me how we’re going to get them if Jared or Chuma don’t create every single one of them?
J’Von is scared to dribble against a set defense... he doesn’t initiate offense quickly enough to run extended action and slowly build to a “good” shot... you don’t want Bryce, Samir, Malik, or Horace to dribble the ball and Austin/Mac aren’t asked to... so what offense would you try to build where the entire halfcourt burden falls on a 5’9” point guard and/or a guy who just doesn’t realize he has to be that guy and/or doesn’t want to be?
you wouldn’t - you couldn’t... so you’d try to score off defense and turnovers, offensive rebounds, and in transition... and when you were in halfcourt, you’d try to spread the floor and give Jared as much help with ball screens as you could and hope he can go to work and create something... which is exactly what we do
the best way for our halfcourt offense to work is not for Bruce to change the way he coaches - but to replace Samir, Mac, Horace, J’Von, and Malik with guys who can actually contribute in a halfcourt offense... which he’s doing
