+++Boogs vs other Bulldogs+++

The two techs and the bank job three were killers. F F F F F F F.
Glad I missed long stretches of this one. Not sure I can handle more negative Boog moments without just giving up on sports.

Love Bruce. Trust in him to do good work. Not sure what has happened to this bunch but we’re just not right. Hope they get it together but man....it feels like they are closer to just flopping out than going on a run now

wasn’t able to follow closely enough to give any real thoughts... and I shan’t be going back and rewatching

looking at the box score and we should never lose a game we shoot that well... I don’t even wanna know how or why it happened

I’m an idiot & can’t find the box scores. What did State shoot from the line?

I’m sorry everyone. I have a lot of shit in my life right now and just wanted the boogs to fill a hole for me.
I got ya'covered, little buddy.

Still not valuing possessions leading to almost 20 turnovers. It’s very frustrating that our guys try to force 1 on 3 breaks instead of pulling the ball out and setting up “something”. I say “something”, because I don’t know if we run a style of offense. Majority of the time it is pick and roll, or pick and pop. I saw a trend 3 weeks ago that we continue to see and if it doesn’t change we’ll be in the NIT.

I was watching in spots and a few times I could have seen 4/5 more possessions before checking back in at the party, but we'd do 2 dumb things I wouldn't want to watch anymore. We shot the ball well enough on the road you'd think that we'd see a W. Yes MSU had a hot half from 3 and that's always a problem if you are the road team but damn....we should win games we hit 3's at the rate we did and have all the shooting stats we had

It's basically coming down to bad hoops IQ and stupid plays IMO. We turn it over way too much and they aren't the kind of turnovers you can tolerate. Defensively it's just as bad. Reaching for a steal that we have a 2% chance to pull off when the shot clock is under 4 leading to an open look that of course the opponent knocks down....or the reach leads to a guard in the paint drawing a foul with 2 on the shot clock. Just boneheaded stuff. Bigs picking up ticky tack fouls 25 feet from the hoop. Guys dribbling off their own legs in the open court. The number of fumbled passes at the rim is astonishing and half the time it's because the passer doesn't execute the easier pass to receive.

I'm not sure what the answer is. Did we do this stuff last year and just get away with it by executing bad plays at a higher clip than you should? Is this just a natural regression? Or have we gotten truly worse in our decision making and on court IQ?

Gotta think Bruce got after their asses pretty good about all the stupid fouls against USCe, so far away from the basket, and we somehow took it to mean “no defense 10 feet and beyond”.

Since so many people like to say “if Wiley plays, we win” I’ll throw one out there. If Davion was still here, we win Saturday.

It’s inevitable I pop this one on tonight or tomorrow. We scored enough to win all of the last 3. Then again 19 TOs we shoot like that we should score 100+. Our D was mostly good in the OOC now we letting everyone score well above their avg.

Kenpom has us as #9 adj O and 72 adj D. I think that tells the story even though I see us as a team that should be even better than that on O.

Agree with everything you said.

Our offense isn’t there when it counts for some reason. We struggle at the beginning of games and at the end of games. Two crucial times you need to succeed. Can’t get to far behind early and you have to score late to come back.

Coming back to this question. I thought we made poor decisions last year, but we were very good at the beginning and at the end of games. We would get out to a decent lead, then struggle mid way, but we would finish strong which masked some of the deficiencies we had thoughtout the games. This year we’re struggling at the beginning, and at the end of games. We get in a double digit deficit early, climb back within 5 or less, then go cold of at the end. We score in bunches, we don’t consistently score throughout a game. We’ll start the game 1-9 from behind the arch getting down by 8 points or double digits, then we’ll hit 7 of our next 12, then at the end we’ll finish 2-11. It has been that way in conference play. I believe our main issues are shot selection and I’m not talking about the 3’s we take. That is who we are and until we get some height and just better basketball players we’ll continue to shoot a lot of 3’s. I believe the issue are the field goals we take inside with Horace, Mac and Malik. Horace spazzes out and attempts horrible looking layups or misses put back dunks, instead of going up with two hands, collecting the ball and going back up strong. Mac is getting pushed around all game. While his attempts aren’t as bad as Horace, he still attempts 3 or 4 shots that leave you shaking your head. I believe he had been a liability for most of the year. His defense just isn’t there, but I believe he who he is and we are getting the most out of him. There is a reason why he wasn’t highly recruited. I’ve never liked Malik and never will. I try, I really do. His ball handling is god awful and he has a low b-ball IQ. He’ll hit 1-3 threes in a game and have 5 turnovers. His on ball defense is god awful. He’s good at trailing and blocking shots from behind, but manning up on someone isn’t his thing.

idk what offense people expect us to run... I saw us run sets to get Mac the ball on the block in back to back possessions and I was begging for him to pass it out, but you also can’t really ask a 6’8” guy to not try to score when he catches the ball 7-8 feet from the basket... we ran multiple reversals, screens, all 5 guys moving and touching the ball, and ended up with - presumably - a “good” shot... they didn’t double - guarded him 1 on 1 and begged him to shoot - and he threw 2 bricks off the backboard... so since the possession ended with a bad miss, no one notices or cares about anything we did to get the ball to that spot - it’s just “we don’t run any offense”... so a possession or 2 later when Jared takes a bad 3 - everyone can point to that and say “see... we just play street ball” - even though the EFG% on that shot (as awful as it may be) is still better than most other shots we’d get considering the rest of the guys on the court

we have a lot of “wasted possessions” the same way you lament a quick pull up 3 or Bryce dribbling the air out of the ball... when the sad reality is, Bryce or Jared taking a bad shot in a wasted possession is better than anything we’re getting from Samir or Mac or Danjel or JVon or Horace in a half court offense

look at our roster and tell me, when the game slows down and we’re being guarded closely in the half court, what “good” shots do you want us to take? and then tell me how we’re going to get them if Jared or Chuma don’t create every single one of them?

J’Von is scared to dribble against a set defense... he doesn’t initiate offense quickly enough to run extended action and slowly build to a “good” shot... you don’t want Bryce, Samir, Malik, or Horace to dribble the ball and Austin/Mac aren’t asked to... so what offense would you try to build where the entire halfcourt burden falls on a 5’9” point guard and/or a guy who just doesn’t realize he has to be that guy and/or doesn’t want to be?

you wouldn’t - you couldn’t... so you’d try to score off defense and turnovers, offensive rebounds, and in transition... and when you were in halfcourt, you’d try to spread the floor and give Jared as much help with ball screens as you could and hope he can go to work and create something... which is exactly what we do

the best way for our halfcourt offense to work is not for Bruce to change the way he coaches - but to replace Samir, Mac, Horace, J’Von, and Malik with guys who can actually contribute in a halfcourt offense... which he’s doing

I get your larger point - but he’s 38% from 3 and has 14 turnovers on the season in 19 games... he got the dumb tech Saturday but had 0 turnovers, so you’re letting the ridulousness of his mistakes cloud your judgment on how many he actually makes

I agree he’s a bad defender... he should be better with his physical gifts

I feel like what I'm about to say is stupid, but I bet Malik is shooting something like 90% on good 3's and he's maybe made one bad 3. The problem for him (and others) is that they go long periods without touching the ball and then want to show their skills when they do get the ball.

I’m not a fan of him at all. Maybe it is clouded, but his defense has sucked. He commits turnovers in bad situations and makes dumb fouls. He’s below average at creating off the dribble. He is a pretty good spot up shooter at times. But you are correct, I don’t like him and have never liked his game. He’s a good athlete though.

Just when Malik was about to force his way into the starting lineup or at least a lot more mins he start playing like ass. Picked up 2 quickies against SC then he comes in starts taking bad shots. Looks like he got a in foul trouble again Saturday. Gets a T.

I’ll keep asking for more zone D. Particularly with Malik and Danjel they can’t guard anybody but they are long, take up space, can get in passing lanes and rebound. Danjel probably still dumb enough to fug up in zone but gotta change something. I rather give up wide open out of rhythm 3s than just get abused inside and out while picking up a zillion fouls.

we have to figure something out in the paint for sure. We can get to .500 in conference just by giving teams open 3's and not giving up layups/dunks I bet...it's not like there are 7 teams killing it from outside and we generally score enough to keep up. We'll miss the tourney if we keep conceding paint points and picking up fouls on all our bigs in the same process. Maybe that's zone. Maybe that's quickly doubling any entry pass.....it's gotta be something because what we're doing is a wreck.

Thank you all for explaining the ins and outs of why we're sucking ass right now. It gives me things to look for.
