"I’m not sure Okoro is going to enter the draft after his freshman season. Starting as low as he is on the mainstream draft radar and with top recruit Sharife Cooper joining him in Auburn in 2020, he might want to stay home and chase a national title. With a substantial 3-point improvement, Okoro’s package of special defense and IQ is enough to classify him as a top-five prospect if he were to enter the 2020 draft."

Gents the season is approaching. Let’s talk lineups.

I see 7 with clearly defined roles. 5 Srs, Okoro and Turbo as backup PG. Think Stretch will at least play as a 3rd string C.

A couple things I don’t suspect we’ll see that’s been mentioned on lesser social media platforms is Danjel at 3 or Mac at 4. Got a lot of dudes that could play on the wings but I’ll go with this as who we see primarily at each spot:

1. Jvon, Turbo
2. Samir, Johnson
3. Okoro, Flanigan
4. Danjel, Jaylin
5. Mac, Austin, Stretch

Predict Cambridge and Franklin RS. Still much to be decided with the backup 2,3 and 4 but Cambridge looks a lil lanky to my eye. Franklin I don’t know much about his status other than he’s coming off an injury. Of course these are 2 of the most electrifying athletes on a squad full of them but somebody gotta sit.

Really nice to have the depth and a legit defensive presence to fill in when Austin and Mac inevitably get happy hands and get into foul trouble. Looking forward to seeing Stretch averaging like 2 blocked shots a game in his 5 minutes per.

That will be a stout 5 when Purifoy, MAC and Austin are on the floor together. Maybe slide Okoro down to the 2 if he dials in his long range game and go super big. Will be nice to finally have a lineup that we can go big if needed and not get bullied.

Guess my biggest question is will Turbo be ready to play when J’Von needs a rest, or if he gets in foul trouble. I think I remember seeing something about Samir maybe being able to run some PG, but I might have been dreaming. I’m so ready!

Franklin has already redshirted and Cambridge could be our best off the bench at the two IMHO....

Regardless, will be the most athletic team in AU history and possibly the best rebounding.

Season can’t start fast enough.

Yes but he could prob get an additional medical RS. I just get the sense Jaylin is further along.

I’m riding with J Johnson for those mins at 2. Whispers of mixed reviews but the child was a top 125 croot, started for a mediocre at best Memphis squad and spent the last year in the dungeon with Steven. Just think he’s gonna be a much better shooter than Cambridge and should be much further along in terms of development and understanding what Bruce likes to do on both sides of the court.

We shall see though just an embarrassment of riches gonna be a battle for playing time.

Agreed, feel like we can’t go wrong and have extreme depth all over.

I doubt you ever see Danjel, Mac, and Austin on the floor together for more than 10 minutes the whole season but I could be wrong
Yeah agree maybe Sr night at the Clam trot them all out there for tip. As far as size Danjel is actually bigger than Mac just has always played much smaller. Then Okoro my god what a specimen.

I think our guards are sneaky decent rebounders now at least much better than last year. Sammy got bullied at 3 but should be match up much better physically at 2. Think I commented at one point last year Jvon was the best rebounder on the team the child is just on another stratosphere athletically and rugged as fug for his size.

Ya boy got the goods in Ferg Dog’s mailbag:

Accepting any and all basketball nugs you have. Practice notes, crootin, locker room updates, if there will be a live stream for Tip off at Toomers, etc.

Denim Vest

Alright, let me use this opportunity to create a mini-Auburn basketball notebook here in the Mailbag.

• Auburn’s mix of five seniors who are stepping into new roles and eight talented newcomers will make for interesting projections. The style will be different, too, with most of the experience coming in the frontcourt. The weaker nonconference slate should buy the Tigers time to jell together without taking too many confidence-shaking losses. Right now, I think a realistic goal for Auburn will be to compete for a top-four seed in the SEC Tournament, which would put it in a good position for a strong seed in the NCAA Tournament. Kentucky and Florida are the clear Top 2 in the league, but no one else looks like it’s definitely better than Auburn’s roster. This team definitely has enough talent to go dancing again — it just will need some time to grow.

• The Tigers are counting on Danjel Purifoy to be a major scoring option this season as Chuma Okeke’s likely replacement at the stretch 4 spot. I personally am in wait-and-see mode when it comes to Purifoy, but he showed flashes of being a top-tier offensive weapon as a freshman. He’s lost weight and has put in a ton of hard work this offseason, which is a great sign for Bruce Pearl and his staff.

• If Isaac Okoro can continue to improve his perimeter shooting, he’ll be one of the best two-way freshmen in college basketball this season. He might already be the best defender Auburn has ever had under Pearl. A strong, versatile player who can guard 1 through 5 and make highlight-reel plays will be worth the price of admission.

• The other freshman I’ve heard a ton about this offseason is Tyrell “Turbo” Jones. Look for him to be Auburn’s top guard off the bench, as he’s someone who can be a point and off-ball player. He has the best shooting ability of the newcomers and has impressive defensive upside. With J’Von McCormick and Samir Doughty adjusting to bigger roles as starters, Auburn will need a young guard to step up in a big way. Jones looks like he can be that guy.

• Auburn is putting the finishing touches on the expanded and renovated locker room, and the tunnel to the court is getting a facelift. As for Tipoff at Toomer’s, I haven’t heard anything about any livestream yet. I will say, though, I think Auburn made the right call by including the women’s team in the event this year. That team will be a lot of fun one to watch this year, too.

So my feels on this year is everyone plays unless they are physically unable. I see young Isaac playing a similar role as chuma his first year but may get even more time due to his higher confidence level and the potential need for more lock down D with the reduced pace this season. I see Turbo playing more of a Davion style role until Bruce feels comfortable with his ability to read the D and distribute appropriately. Maybe Samir splits time between the 1 & 2 depending on if javon needs a break.
Overall I guess I see a lot of rotation early so that these newbz can can experience n the system before league play starts. Then we’ll most likely see 8 guys unless there is foul trouble or thing get out of hand.

Tigers expecting more out of Doughty for his senior season
By MARK MURPHY
AUBURN, Alabama--Coach Bruce Pearl has told Samir Doughty that he will be needed to step up as both a scorer and a leader for the 2019-20 Auburn basketball season. The senior guard said he will not shy away from the challenge.

“I am taking on more of a leadership role, more of a scoring role, but I am also want to get my teammates involved and be unselfish,” Doughty said. “Being more of a leader is the biggest thing I have to adjust to.”

Doughty, a six-foot-four guard from Philadelphia, is the leading scorer among the returnees from last season’s Final Four team. He averaged 7.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.4 steals while playing 24.2 minutes per game.

He saw action in every game for the 30-10 SEC Tournament champions and started 27 times. As a junior Doughty made 46.5 percent of his field goals and among the players who started games his 42.5 percent shooting from three-point range was a team high.

“We have a lot of new people so we are trying to get everybody on the same page as far as what Coach wants us to run and as far as what he wants us to be defensively,” Doughty said. “It has been much different coming from a veteran team to inexperienced team, but I think we will be fine by November.”

On the first of November the Tigers will play a home exhibition game vs. Eckerd College. On November 5th Georgia Southern will visit Auburn Arena for the regular season opener.

On a roster that includes five scholarship seniors and seven scholarship newcomers plus transfer guard Jamal Johnson coming off a redshirt year, the Tigers will have a very different roster, but one that has the potential to feature quality depth.

“I think Bruce always does a good job of having good depth with his teams,” Doughty said. “We have a lot of good athletes. We have a lot of longer guys so we are going to be much longer, much bigger than we were last season so I feel the rebounding standpoint is going to be much better.”

Commenting on what he is focused on individually heading into his senior season, Doughty said, “Finishing around the basket more. I have been working on my shooting. That is something I struggled with last year finishing over bigger people than I am used to so that is just something I have been working on when I am in the gym by myself.”

Bruce a little hot about a couple croots at the end.

oooh, he’s salty... I like it - because BRUCE won’t just throw up his hands and roll over, he’s gonna figure out a way to stop it... it’s the last step of this process - and he’s already proven he can win without it, but once he does, it’s over

it’s only gonna take 2 guys, maybe 3 - and Sharife is the first one... give him 1 more guy to run with this year or next, and let them preach the gospel of BRUCE to the next crop, and watch it snowball

Pretty excited about the Samir played injured last year comment. I actually asked that question at some point during the season. If he can stay healthy, that could be huge for us.
I remember JGT saying that everyone thought Samir was one of the best players on the court during practice for the 2017-2018 season, and then when he started playing I didn't think I saw anything that looked like the hype. That does help explain why he seemed like he had zero explosive ability all year

he had zero lift... I assumed he was just limited athletically but got by because he’s crafty - euro step, great hands and defensive anticipation, etc - but was never going to be anything more than a spot up shooter in the half court... he had no chance finishing in the paint last year and was hesitant or sloppy trying to create in the half court

if he has some lift back, and some confidence back so he’s moving with more purpose and attacking harder - that will force opposing bigs to react instead of attack and create space to make those short area passes that were turnovers last year

we’re going to have to score in the half court this year - and we need a secondary creator with Chuma gone... if Samir can give us more of that than he did last year it will be a huge help
