OT: 2019-20 boog hoops

This is way way way way OT, but has that imbecile auliferz, whatever his tag is, ever come over here? He rustles me something fierce (which does not happen too often). Dude is annoying AF (and thinks he knows everything)

It you want to re-read it, it starts on page 55 of the Auburn Basketball thread. For God’s sake don’t reply to him, quote him or tag him. FTR, it’s my fault he stopped by, which was basically my lowest moment on the Greg.

hypothetical question.

What are y’alls realistic expectations with the following roster:

Jvon / Turbo
Rayjon / Samir / Jamal
Okoro / Samir / Flanigan
Danjel / Jaylin Williams
Mac / Wiley / Stretch

I’m thinking we can be top 4 in the sec and sweet 16 is the ceiling. Even a second round L wouldn’t be terribly disappointing from where we sit right now

Your expectations are fair, but could be higher could be lower. Just depends on how everyone gels. This is the biggest thing to me in the Bruce offense, because you have to keep moral up even if someone isn't getting their shots. If Danjel is a major part of the offense and he is having success as a 4 that knocks down 3's that raises our ceiling. If Danjel is a 4 who doesn't get a lot of shots and he starts to pout that lowers our ceiling. I think the main reason for this is that our offense relies in part on great defense. I think teams play better defense when moral is up. Moral goes down, people get selfish, we might get stuck in a rebuilding year.

I think people are underrating Turbo... he's beautiful.

a lot of questions, but plenty of talent to answer them

1 - how’s Rayjon and Jamal’s on-ball and team defense?
2 - how’s Okoro in the half court offense - in all facets?
3 - can Danjel and Rayjon help as secondary creators and get shots for anyone besides themselves?
4 - Mac, Wiley, Samir athleticism/agility improvements?

it’s a bigger, more physically imposing lineup which should rebound better from the 1/2/3/5 spots which will hopefully make up for the defensive drop from Chuma to Danjel... but how will Rayjon and Jamal fit as team defenders - rotating, playing the wing or point of a zone, etc

we’ll be different offensively... still spreading you out and shooting a lot of 3’s, just not as many, so we’re going to have to make it up by getting to the basket and using all 5 guys to create looks instead of relying solely on Jared in the halfcourt... Jvon’s assist numbers were not great, but he also played a lot with Jared on the court which explains part of it... regardless, he’s not as natural a playmaker and doesn’t have the feel for the passing game that Jared does... Danjel is a much better passer than given credit for, Mac has incrementally improved from a complete liability to a simple ball mover to actually making a few plays here and there... I don’t worry about Okoro or Rayjon’s willingness to pass, but I’ll need to see their ability to break down a closeout or create on the secondary break when they can’t finish over everyone on the court the way they have their entire lives

Mac & Wiley coming back from injury played much better in March - and Samir needs just a slight uptick after working in the dungeon with Steven for 6 more months just for incremental improvements... if Samir can finish slightly better, turn the corner slightly faster, create just a tad more separation to be able to pass in traffic - his turnovers go down and we score more at the rim

we can’t replace Jared or Chuma with 1 or 2 guys, it’s going to take all of those things from all 5 guys on the court at a given time to each do just a little more, and combined we make up for it

if we do, we’re a Sweet 16 team and no one will want to see us in their bracket

My expectations are 100% dependant on whether or not I see Danjel's sex tape.

This is Bruce bruh sweet 16 is the new expectation even in a potential ‘down’ year.

I think in this scenario we’d add another contributor at 4/5 to replace Chuma. Even if we don’t that’s a ton of talent for Bruce and Steven to mold into champions.

Fear not, I agree on Sweet 16 expectations from here on out.

Reason I ask the hypo is cuz in this scenario we are losing our best and most handsome studs. I have full confidence in the boogs listed above, but just imo - they don’t have the same ceiling as the 18-19 HYG squad.

I think its hard to say "sweet 16 is a the ceiling" after the run we just went on with that roster at this stage. There is a ton of talent there and we have a lot of questions regarding how the team would gel. Most would have said the round of 32 was our ceiling this year when we were 7-7 in SEC play. Give Bruce a talented group that makes the tournament and there is no ceiling, imo.

From here on, I think the boogs have a glass ceiling each year of a National Championship. Who knows, though, maybe we'll break through and go further than that one year.

Agree

One of the few experts outside the Greg that had the boogs in the final 4 and he looks to be on target here. Of course we get Rayjon or Jared/ Chuma back we vault to the top.

The conference takes a nose dive after AU/ UK but laughing at Bama getting so much love.

seriously. my jaw dropped.

appreciate the early discussion, but if BAMA finishes ahead of Florida next year I’ll shit myself

idk how Florida keeps signing the classes they do - Mike White strikes me as a total bore, zero charisma - but their top 5-6 guys will be as good as anybody next year

Wow.

Anyway, not much in there. Was hoping for some more deets but whatever
I trust BRUCE with all my being, but going into 2019-2020 with just J’Von and Turbo does not give me the most confidence. Really need Jared to surprise or Sharife to go ahead and boog out.

Ima suspicious of Samir being able to play point but I’m confident Jvon and Tyrell can give us championship caliber PG play. Baby AI was a revelation in our postseason run.

McCormick played like 75% of the UF game in the SEC tournament.

throughout the tournament:

J'Von min reb ast pts

NMSU - 17 2 1 16
KU - 14 2 2 6
UNC - 21 2 2 10
UK - 12 1 0 2
UVA - 16 0 1 6

Jared min reb ast pts

NMSU - 31 1 4 17
KU - 35 0 6 18
UNC - 25 1 11 9
UK - 39 4 5 26
UVA - 33 1 3 11

McCormick has trouble against bigger guards... I think

He needs to learn to create fouls more going against the bigger guards when taking it to the hole. I think he’ll do that next season. Seemed to me he’s more of the type to finish while SBJ is the type to look for the pass more. Not knocking SBJ at all there because he has a better feel for the game and the players around him and sees more. Would love for Von to get there.

so did Harper though. That's the negative with undersized guys at the PG spot. Though I'll take 10 more Jared Harpers for the next 20 years and be happy with the results.

Purifoy is going to need to be Chuma-like, but probably taking more shots and be more assertive on that end. We lose so much. You aren't going to replace that with newbies very easily. Wiley needs to be 10x the player we've seen. Danjel needs to be the Danjel we saw down the stretch + more. McCormick needs to be the guy that picked us up a few times when Harper was in foul trouble. Samir needs to be the defensive menace he was in the tourney. We're gonna be in trouble if any of those guys fade back.
