hypothetical question.
What are y’alls realistic expectations with the following roster:
Jvon / Turbo
Rayjon / Samir / Jamal
Okoro / Samir / Flanigan
Danjel / Jaylin Williams
Mac / Wiley / Stretch
I’m thinking we can be top 4 in the sec and sweet 16 is the ceiling. Even a second round L wouldn’t be terribly disappointing from where we sit right now
a lot of questions, but plenty of talent to answer them
1 - how’s Rayjon and Jamal’s on-ball and team defense?
2 - how’s Okoro in the half court offense - in all facets?
3 - can Danjel and Rayjon help as secondary creators and get shots for anyone besides themselves?
4 - Mac, Wiley, Samir athleticism/agility improvements?
it’s a bigger, more physically imposing lineup which should rebound better from the 1/2/3/5 spots which will hopefully make up for the defensive drop from Chuma to Danjel... but how will Rayjon and Jamal fit as team defenders - rotating, playing the wing or point of a zone, etc
we’ll be different offensively... still spreading you out and shooting a lot of 3’s, just not as many, so we’re going to have to make it up by getting to the basket and using all 5 guys to create looks instead of relying solely on Jared in the halfcourt... Jvon’s assist numbers were not great, but he also played a lot with Jared on the court which explains part of it... regardless, he’s not as natural a playmaker and doesn’t have the feel for the passing game that Jared does... Danjel is a much better passer than given credit for, Mac has incrementally improved from a complete liability to a simple ball mover to actually making a few plays here and there... I don’t worry about Okoro or Rayjon’s willingness to pass, but I’ll need to see their ability to break down a closeout or create on the secondary break when they can’t finish over everyone on the court the way they have their entire lives
Mac & Wiley coming back from injury played much better in March - and Samir needs just a slight uptick after working in the dungeon with Steven for 6 more months just for incremental improvements... if Samir can finish slightly better, turn the corner slightly faster, create just a tad more separation to be able to pass in traffic - his turnovers go down and we score more at the rim
we can’t replace Jared or Chuma with 1 or 2 guys, it’s going to take all of those things from all 5 guys on the court at a given time to each do just a little more, and combined we make up for it
if we do, we’re a Sweet 16 team and no one will want to see us in their bracket
