LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas--Coach Jason Flanigan says that the Auburn basketball team is adding a player who will help the Tigers win games during the 2019-20 season.
Javon Franklin, who played for Flanigan at Holmes Community College, plans to be in Auburn this week to begin preparations to enroll for classes on the AU campus after announcing on Friday a commitment to the Tigers.
Franklin, a 6-7, 218 forward, is from Little Rock, Ark., where he played for Coach Al Flanigan, the father of Jason Flanigan and Auburn assistant coach Wes Flanigan. Al Flanigan's grandson, Allen, will be a freshman on the 2019-20 Auburn team.
“I have been watching Javon over the years going back to when he was playing for my father in the ninth grade,” Jason Flanigan said. “He is a family member--he is like a son to me.
“He is a great kid, a humble kid,” the coach pointed out. “Javon is a hard worker like all of the guys that come through that Parkview program. He was fortunate to come over to Holmes and be a part of the Holmes family.”
Franklin was the Most Valuable Player of Parkview High’s 2016-17 squad as he averaged 16 points, 8.7 rebounds per game.
“He is a defensive guy who makes plays--rebounds, blocked shots, steals. He makes game-winning plays and he is a player who can help Auburn get back to the Final Four.”
On Friday following an official visit to Auburn the forward committed to the Tigers, saying he also considered West Virginia, Memphis, ECU and Oklahoma State. He has since signed scholarship papers with Auburn and has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Franklin received recruiting attention this winter and spring despite playing in just one game this past season after suffering a broken bone in his leg when he was landed on in a pileup during a game. Auburn had already been recruiting him before that happened after Franklin averaged 10.8 points and 8.2 points per game as a juco freshman he received an offer from the Tigers.
“He wanted to play in the SEC from the start,” Jason Flanigan pointed out. “I think Auburn is one of the better programs in the country. Bruce Pearl is a great coach. Javon is excited about the opportunity he has at Auburn.”
