OT: 2019-20 boog hoops

ok...so first the honk on the boog board gives a complete team update omitting Danjel. Now there is an offseason video omitting Danjel. What does the @GREG think? @Boytano is starting wonder "wtf gives?"

I think he is spot on. I anticipate a healthy Wiley being the best big man in the SEC. Everyone seen what he could do against Duke. He averaged playing 13 min a game last year, but still manage to average 7pts, 1.3 blocks and 4.3 rebounds per game. Not bad in 13 min of play.

I agree... personally I’d love him as the first big off the bench, playing 18-20 mins a night to keep him fresh and healthy all year

regardless, if he stays completely healthy for another 4 months - gets a full offseason of work in - some people are going to be shocked by how dominant he is in non-conference play to start the season

I’m not sure he’s ever been healthy for 13 consecutive months in his life, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed we can go from March 2019 to March 2020 with no setbacks... but god help everyone if he does

Dude has Okoro as a potential lottery pick next year

High praise for Bruce. No surprise there.

"Although Okoro is only in the mid-60s, I’m willing to bet on his shot also, due to his general feel and motor (two positive indicators for future development), as well as the shooting improvements that players have made under the tutelage of Bruce Pearl in recent years."

Steven is the J whisperer... 6-18 months in the dungeon and your life is forever changed

damn - didn’t expect the Okoro love to come until year 2... if he’s a lottery pick it means his offensive game is much more polished than we’ve been led to believe

although it also would open the door for a Fab 5 class of Shariffe, Powell/Stone, Boston, Brown, Kessler or a wing to be named later if we miss on Boston

as long as SBS and Brown are the core of the class i'm good...Kessler would be great but still really want the Omoruyi stud too

Was able to go to practice yesterday which was held in the main arena gym.

Everyone present expect Stretch.

Jones has made incredible progress after his minor surgery and was able to shoot etc. He and Javon are still being held out of contact drills and did work with Coach Davis on the end lines. I see zero reason that Jones will not be cleared for full contact in a month or so. Kid has an excellent frame and was drilling shots from the outside. From the little I see so far he will contribute this year.

The practice was kinda cut between drills highly focused on D and then half court and full court play working on offensive sets etc.

A few things taken away yesterday.

1. Okoro is a defensive giant. Dude played against the opposing teams PG and our poor walk-on (who is competent but not a star) was up a creek without a paddle. Okoro can keep his body in front of anyone after what I witnessed yesterday. He also showed skill in going down hill and in passing when things were taken away. He is currently on the "starting 5" playing the 3. I see no reason why he will not be in the starting lineup from day one. He also knocked down some open shots which is important to see in BPs system.

2. Flanigan will contribute this year. I believe he will be the revelation of the class as he was less heralded than others in this class yet he has the frame and skills to show well. He is fundamentally sound as a coaches kid would be expected to be but also is several notches higher athletically than I believe many knew. He has good court vision and passes well. He has no issue knocking down the open shot and can run the floor and play above the rim. My prediction is he will be a glue guy before this group is finished.

3. Williams had a nice day yesterday. He showed a good bit at times and even knocked down a in your face three causing Coach Bowman to gasp and say at first what the hell only to have the ball go right in. It was a funny moment. Williams has a high ceiling but will most likely take a little longer to get fully comfortable and find his role fully. He is athletic with a good frame. His offense will come to him but he has a high ceiling and expect him to be a good player for this program for years to come.

4. Wiley looks as healthy and fit as I have ever seen him. He was aggressive and played through contact several times. He is working hard to get the ball and finish. Yesterday several times they ran some offense through him and if he can stay healthy will create major matchup issues for other teams. He must concentrate this year on not getting in silly foul trouble which often has caused him to only get limited minutes. Stay healthy and he will finally have that breakout year we all have been waiting for.

5. Samir is shooting the ball really well and playing with a ton of confidence. You can see he really is locked and loaded for his senior year. He learned a ton last year and will be a key for this coming year.

6. Purifoy has made strides and has changed the composition a bit of his body. If he can stay focused he will as well finally have that full year to break out and be what we have all seen in flashes last year.

7. All in all the level of intensity was really good for a summer practice. The squad has an air about them that they know they belong and the expectations are higher. Team chemistry seems really really good as well. The freshman to a man are high quality people and all seem to be relishing their opportunity at AU.

All in all a good practice.

From the Internet:

Basketball thoughts

I have had the chance to watch Auburn men’s basketball work out on several occasions this summer and what sticks out to me is the apparent physical readiness of this freshman class. That’s often the thing that is the toughest when a freshman steps into the SEC, but seeing Isaac Okoro, Allen Flanigan and Jaylin Williams around the returning group of veterans on the Auburn roster it’s obvious they belong and they belong now.
Watching Okoro on the court the thing that stands out about him is his physical presence. It’s not a presence of being 6-10 nor 250, but it’s his legs. His lower body is built like a junior defensive end, not a freshman small forward. That’s what allows him to play defense so well, something that will make it tough to take him off the floor even as a true freshman. With a strong midrange game and continuing to improve his outside shot, Okoro could make a big impact right away.

Having watched Williams in person last season as a high school senior I was already familiar with his athleticism, but he has gotten stronger since arriving at Auburn and should also be able to help at the power forward position behind Danjel Purifoy. Being able to go up against Purifoy, Austin Wiley and Anfernee McLemore every day in practice is a big asset for Williams going into his first season.

That brings us to Flanigan. He impressed me as much as anyone when watching the Tigers practice this summer because of his size. He’s a big 6-5 guard, but he’s light on his feet and has very good touch shooting the basketball. He’s not going to have a problem with the physical side of the game in college because of his body and with his smooth stroke I predict Flanigan is going to surprise some people when the Tigers get on the floor.

From the older guys the one who jumps out to me was McLemore. He has improved his ball handling in a big way and put the ball on the floor several times and got to the rim. With the range from the perimeter to knock down shots, the junior is going to force people to guard him. If he can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket then look out.

My goodness our new studs are handsome.

Guys, I’m just out here thinking but still think it’s a little strange we’re going into the year with one PG in McCormick. Not sure how Turbo’s health will be and if he’ll be ready to take on that role or not.

All that to say, I haven’t given up hope that Young Sharife is going to show up in August or January

I thought Tyrell will be fully healthy by the time official practice starts?

Yeah I should have worded that differently - meant if his health right now keeping him limited in practice would keep him from being fully in sync with the offense when the season starts.

Jhead has hinted at a surprise that the team is keeping very quiet, and I'm just guessing that Sharife coming in early is still in play

Maybe I’m just a hopeless optimist but I still think there was wayyyy too much smoke about Cooper reclassifying for it to not be off the table now. Would be interesting if he is just a few classes short and enrolls in January like Austin did
