Hey gang, so I’m thinking about doing keto but don’t know much. Doing research and was going to ask here but then thought let’s just have a health thread. A place where we can share health tips, workout/cardio ropes, and the most important diet tips. I absolutely hate meal prep and taking the time to cook and thought about doing nutrisystem just for the simplicity of it. I travel a lot so I’m lazy when it comes to that.
Anywho it’s here so maybe we can learn something. And if you’re doing keto what does a week of food look like for you usually?

I can state unequivocally that I am the healthiest individual to ever log on to the Greg.

My family has a history of heart disease (regardless of diet and weight) and lung cancer (not from smoking).

Ask me anything before I croak

Keto is great initially but you're gonna need to find a way to modify your to make sure your body has proper levels of glycogen, this is super important once your body has made the first drop and you start adding/increasing exercise to continue to drop weight/maintain current weight. Once you get to your goal or given milestone , i would look at keto as a quarterly, month long diet program, almost like fasting, that allows you to lean out. It's not a permanent diet like paleo.

Really? From what I have seen a lot of people have been doing keto for years.

Keto seems really tough for someone who doesn't like to meal prep and who travels a lot.

I tried it for less than 2 months and my typical day was

1) cheesy eggs and bacon
2) salad with a protein, cottage cheese
3) green veggies with a protein
4) low carb protein shake

yeah, that's why so many doctors are warning folks about it. Site low bone density, lowers metabolism (not what you want if you're already overweight), lowers immune response and increases risk of disease.

A lot of my friends are paleo, it's pretty ease to meal plan once you reset what you can eat and how those ingredients can be used in non-tradtional ways. The biggest is featuring the veggies and making the meat more as "side", this was the major struggle for us at family meal. They weren't familiar with how to prepare good tasting alternatives to the non paleo things that were included in our meals so they just ate larger portions of meat...not cool.

Well what do a few days or whatever of your diet look like?

Somewhat like this
My diet is basically turkey sandwiches, coffee, water, and a six pack. And I’m in great shape gang

PLUS
smoothie/yogurt granola and berries for breakfast
Large leafy green salad (light on the dressing) for lunch.
Dinner is usually 3/4 cup rice or sweet potatoes some sort of sauteed greens, some other veggies,
6ish oz portion of protein... if no meat then double down on greens.
wash down with generous amounts of bourbon/beer
(would limits the beer and booze if your goal is to lose weight and more importantly inches, especially the beer)

eat nuts and veggies during the day as my snacks, maybe a 2nd smoothie.

Honestly I don't really have to battle weight like some other folks, but due to my work life and getting older (44, my metabolism really slowed down after 32ish) it's all about revving up my metabolism. So i try to do that by eating 6 smaller servings a day and try to make time for exercise at least 5 times a week. i used to think it's impossible but now it's my favorite part of my daily grind.
I'm by no means the spitting image of health, just trying to hold on to a slightly better average dad bod .

The first thing to understand is that every body is different and reacts differently to every type of diet and workout routine. For me, I’ve found that paleo with a good 3miler 3 times per week with pushups and a good body weight only core regimen works best for me. Weight room lifting absolutely kills my joints nowadays, even though I’m only 35.

I was thinking of trying a Boog legend endorsed testosterone supplement. Anyone have experience? Either that or maybe do Uber to pay for lipo. Diet and exercise is such a pain.
It’s pretty crazy that both Bo and Frank, two guys who have been out of the spotlight forever, are both now shamelessly hawking two different testosterone supplements

Buncha ouldes....

(I'll be 35 in 32 days)

Fvck all y'all. I'm 53 and counting.

I'm telling you - Intermittent Fasting. My mom is 73 and has lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks and she eats whatever she wants. Amazingly, though, I watched her start with lots of carbs (popcorn, chips, almond torts) to within 3 weeks eating things like salads and lean meats, cheese, olives and almonds - much healthier foods as her body became fat adapted and her window shortened naturally, too. Started with eating 8 hours a day and now is between 4 and 5 most days but has done 2.

Get the book Delay, Don't Deny.
Easy read that breaks down what to do and how it works. Lots of info online about it, too.

About four years ago I started eating just one meal per day during the work week. I drink coffee and only have dinner. Then I eat whatever I want on the weekend. I lost form about 255 to 220-225 and have kept it off since then. I guess this qualifies as cyclical intermittent fasting. I don't recommend it as it probably doesn't fit everyone, but it works for me in keeping my weight down.

Interesting. I've never heard of this. May look into it. And it's a sustainable method, not a quick fix?

Definitely something you can do as a way of life. My stepdad took one look at my mom after she got back to Alabama (she had been with me for 5 weeks) and he started doing it. After about a week, he said he feels better than he has in years. They have both been working out with a personal trainer since last June and they both said doing this has made them feel better and has given them more energy than having consistently exercised has.

Do you think it would still work if I took my vitamins in the morning? I think I could handle no breakfast, a lot of days I don't eat it anyway.

Any of you swim for exercise? You just do X number of laps or what?

Considering the free style stroke (hehe, I said stroke) basically works every muscle in your body, laps is all you need. But, it does even better if you mix different strokes.

I was swimming for a while a few months ago, hoping to get back started in the next few weeks. I was doing it after a light workout, so you could probably do more if you were just swimming. I did sets of 3, 2 freestyle down and backs and one breast stroke down and back. Started around 3 sets and worked up to 5 sets. Took me between 20 and 30 minutes. I used to enjoy running, but I have some knee problems and swimming has been great.

Make sure there is no sugar, artificial sweetener or protein. Basically you do not want your body to produce insulin. A good way to tell if they would cause a problem is to wait and take them when you eat for a few days and then take them first thing in the morning for a few days. If you find that you are hungry pretty soon after taking them in the morning, then you may want to wait and take them when you break your fast.

Different people react differently to something as innocuous as a vitamin. Same with lemon/lime. Some people can put it in water and drink during a fast and not break their fast. Others can't.

There's been guys on the delay don't deny Facebook group that have knocked off 10 to 15 lbs in two weeks. Others may even gain thefirst two weeks and then drop 5 to 8 the third week.
Everybody's bodies react differently.

But I'd say give it a try. My mom and others in the group have literally been able to stop using their reading glasses.

Friday is my last day to work for the next 5 to 6 weeks. I'm starting Saturday. My schedule has been too nuts to even establish a sleeping pattern much less a fasting pattern but looking forward to getting started and getting into a routine of it with the time off.

Tomorrow will be my last day EVER to have to drive into D.C. from MD for work. It's been 26 years of that crap. I feel like throwing a celebratory parade for myself.

@midnighttulips - how do you handle alcohol? I've been abstaining for lent, but that isn't sustainable forever. Do you just drink during the time you're allowed to eat or do you just have cheat days? I'm enjoying it btw, I'm down around 10 pounds over the last couple of weeks.

Becoming at peace with what a crippling disappointment your life has become is a rite of passage into adulthood. Welcome.

There is no path to happiness that doesn't start right here. The reason you see bitter, angry, temperamental grandparents is that those people never came to terms with the mediocrity of their lives. See it, wrap your arms around it and embrace the idea that you are not going to be a world changer. You are not a unique and beautiful snowflake. You are average. You will not be remembered by hundreds of thousands. You won't be in history books. You will not be famous. It's okay.

Once you get here you can start being happy with a Honda Accord, a nice 3 bedroom house in a mediocre suburb and a yearly vacation to the Redneck Rivera. Anything beyond that is a bonus that you celebrate as if you won the lottery. This is life. Either realize it or be a miserable SOB and embrace that.

So true, but I can still by lotto tickets right?
