OT: The official The Greg health thread.

Make sure there is no sugar, artificial sweetener or protein. Basically you do not want your body to produce insulin. A good way to tell if they would cause a problem is to wait and take them when you eat for a few days and then take them first thing in the morning for a few days. If you find that you are hungry pretty soon after taking them in the morning, then you may want to wait and take them when you break your fast.

Different people react differently to something as innocuous as a vitamin. Same with lemon/lime. Some people can put it in water and drink during a fast and not break their fast. Others can't.

There's been guys on the delay don't deny Facebook group that have knocked off 10 to 15 lbs in two weeks. Others may even gain thefirst two weeks and then drop 5 to 8 the third week.
Everybody's bodies react differently.

But I'd say give it a try. My mom and others in the group have literally been able to stop using their reading glasses.

Friday is my last day to work for the next 5 to 6 weeks. I'm starting Saturday. My schedule has been too nuts to even establish a sleeping pattern much less a fasting pattern but looking forward to getting started and getting into a routine of it with the time off.

Tomorrow will be my last day EVER to have to drive into D.C. from MD for work. It's been 26 years of that crap. I feel like throwing a celebratory parade for myself.
Send pics of celebratory parade to my email plz. Kerryon...

There is no path to happiness that doesn't start right here. The reason you see bitter, angry, temperamental grandparents is that those people never came to terms with the mediocrity of their lives. See it, wrap your arms around it and embrace the idea that you are not going to be a world changer. You are not a unique and beautiful snowflake. You are average. You will not be remembered by hundreds of thousands. You won't be in history books. You will not be famous. It's okay.

Once you get here you can start being happy with a Honda Accord, a nice 3 bedroom house in a mediocre suburb and a yearly vacation to the Redneck Rivera. Anything beyond that is a bonus that you celebrate as if you won the lottery. This is life. Either realize it or be a miserable SOB and embrace that.

What the world doesn’t owe us happiness? Gadzukes, who knew? :D

did not read this whole thread, but I essentially have cut out all sugar that is possible for me to avoid from my diet, I've started lifting 4 times per week, eat things that make your gut healthier.

So my basic day looks like
Morning: avacado and pineapple smoothie, 20g of whey

afternoon: variable but seaweed and some sort of grilled shrimp or chicken, maybe a subway sandwhich.

evening: Salmon/Chicken, rice (pre packaged stuff because I'm lazy), broccoli/spinach.

Drink ONLY water, other than Kombucha or smoothies. No soft drinks, no beer, no sweet tea. water.

Maybe I'd drink green tea if I had it but I don't.

Since I've started this "diet" (don't really ever plan on coming off it) I have WAY more energy...way more, I feel better, more positive about life, healthier of course, and I'm absolutely shredding it in school. I take vitamin D supplements most days and a neutropic called Alpha Brain.

I've become kind of snobby though, every time I see someone drinking a coke I can't help but think "man I bet you hate being bloated" and when I see moms in the stores buying sugary shit for their kids I kinda just shake my head, but tbh I only see it at the checkout line because I literally only stop on the pasta/rice isle, the meat/seafood section, and the fruits/vegetables section.
Pretty much never see half the grocery store and my sections are usually not crowded. It's no wonder there are so many fat chicks on tinder...I swear 65% of the women on tinder are overweight....its gross.

uhmmm not much else to say, not drinking kind of sucks I miss going out and getting hammered but I think I'll live.

What ore packaged stuff are you talkin about? I’m lazy too and been traveling some so not able to get in a routine.

I have been a runner for 20+ years, but I recently had an excema flare up on my foot that caused my heel to split open, so I purchased a single gear fixie bike that hasn't arrived yet. I'm hoping this will be a suitable replacement as I have gained about 10-15 bad pounds over the last 6 months or so. Getting old sucks.

Problem is weed makes me not motivated to do the rest of this stuff which takes discipline. Maybe once I feel really solid and in a groove I'll smoke a joint every now and then but not until I've achieved what I need.
Yeah that's a good plan. I would say weed is best consumed as an occasional reward for maintaining good living habits, and not as a living habit, unless you've already made it to the mountain top.

I have always been someone that just started running whenever I needed to lose weight. Well the last few years every time I tried to run my knee would swell up. This has led me to being way too fat. I have started using the elliptical and swimming. The elliptical is cool because I can do an hour and still feel like working out after, but swimming is the truth.

TL;DR - try swimming.

@midnighttulips - how do you handle alcohol? I've been abstaining for lent, but that isn't sustainable forever. Do you just drink during the time you're allowed to eat or do you just have cheat days? I'm enjoying it btw, I'm down around 10 pounds over the last couple of weeks.

I'm not a big drinker so it's not something I've had to think about yet. I imagine that when I know I'm going to drink I will adjust that eating window to open around 6 or 7 pm so I can drink what I want to for the next 8 hours.

I've got a friend doing it, tho, who usually has a drink or two every night and she just has those drinks during the time she can eat and has no problem with it.

Glad you are enjoying the IF and congrats on the weight loss!!!

Here is my diet that keeps my weight down.

Eat a banana on the way to work.
Get so f*cking busy at work I forget to eat.
Forget to eat on the way home because I'm cussing at other bad drivers
Eat a massive meal for dinner because I am starving.
For late night either bourbon or weed and several snacks (like to mix it up...no addiction here).
Rinse and repeat.

I forget to eat at work often. Wondered if I was crazy for working through it

lol I start asking my coworkers at 9 where we are eating today. Then we debate for 90 minutes and then spend the other 30 minutes mulling around in a huddle near the elevator.

Fvck all y'all. I'm 53 and counting.

I'm telling you - Intermittent Fasting. My mom is 73 and has lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks and she eats whatever she wants. Amazingly, though, I watched her start with lots of carbs (popcorn, chips, almond torts) to within 3 weeks eating things like salads and lean meats, cheese, olives and almonds - much healthier foods as her body became fat adapted and her window shortened naturally, too. Started with eating 8 hours a day and now is between 4 and 5 most days but has done 2.

Get the book Delay, Don't Deny.
Easy read that breaks down what to do and how it works. Lots of info online about it, too.
Great tip! I’ve never educated myself on nutrition and dieting, this was a good start.

I think that's weird. I absolutely have to eat. Not like a big meal or anything but I have to at least eat a sandwich or something otherwise my brain goes to mush.

I didn’t used to be like that, but something about having a lot of responsibility now has caused it. Need to be more disciplined though

I want to know who the hell can get filled up by 1 tiny ass lean cuisine? I have been forced to eat 2 at a time when I was a youngster too lazy to get to a taco bell. Even felt like I needed another 2 and I was a buck seventeen at the time.

Ate pasta last night, just wheat penne with meat sauce and felt like shit wtf... Guess I have to relegate that meal to post workout.

I can’t follow a diet. Too lazy when it comes to meal prep. Just eating less and trying to cut out all sweets since that’s always been my problem. Cut out all sodas in 2018 as well.

Also discovered the elliptical which I always thought was too girly to use, but it beats my knees killing me from running

My wife and I did Weight Watchers a few years ago and we did a one night deep dive into their points system and it worked out best for us, out of everything.

Our biggest problem was that Weight Watchers, to us, seemed set up to just enable people.

I have also recently discovered the elliptical. Josh Niblett works out in my gym and once I saw him on the elliptical I decided it was ok for me too.

What do you mean? That they only encourage people instead of trying to change habits?

I use t but I feel like I get more work done on a treadmill for some reason.
All else equal I prefer running too. I got up to being able to do around 7-8 Miles at a time a couple years ago and did a Ragnar Relay, but it just kills my knees.

No they have a "points system" where you can eat whatever you want you just have to log the points and don't overstep it.

Its basically an even simpler form of calorie counting. I felt like it wasn't getting to the root of our problems, which were pretty specific (cokes-her, stress snacking-me).

Definitely. I used to be able to focus and run a few miles day one and in a week I could run 4 or 5 miles easy. Unfortunately now when I run my knee swells up and then I can't do shit for at least a month.

Was just thinking how people like to say bread is bad for you lately. Wtf ever just hacked off a few slices of challah bread with butter to fill the gap in a subpar dinner. Good stuff. People have survived a long time on bread I’ll not tolerate it’s persectution.

Subpar dinner. Just like Jesus was when he was starving in the wilderness. Except you took the bread from Satan when he tempted you.

Nice knowin ya.
