Eh, I don't think that's the kind of hire Ole Miss makes. Kiffin had plenty of NCAA clouds around him at both USC and UT. You don't hire a guy the NCAA probably dislikes a ton (even his non-compliance antics are sure to annoy the governing body) and you also don't hire a guy who is known as the type that likes to hang out in the college bars with the college girls after you just fired a HC you loved b/c he was cheating and calling escorts.
I wouldn't hire Kiffin till he proved he had grown up TBH. He's a good play caller, but that's all he's proven to me. He can't manage a program. Didn't at UT and didn't at USC for sure. Right now he strikes me as a guy who would recruit a couple of good classes, call some fun plays and then cuts you a ton of grief because he screws it all up with dumb off field actions. There have to be better options out there. (also, despite his highlight reel play calls that everyone talks about he often abandons the run at the worst times and for some reason people just give that a pass)
My thoughts were on par with yours prior to last December. Lane is not the guy people make him out to be, especially with the whole freshwater thing even though it is hilarious. He’s MUCH closer to what you’re looking for in a head coach than our current buffoon, trust me. I’m not advocating for Auburn to hire him and I agree with the ole miss/compliance history with him, but he’s not what sports writers want you to think he is
I can't compare it to Gus because I'd hire my neighbors 12 year old girl to replace Gus. Literally anyone would be better b/c they'd stay out of the assistants way.
If he's matured and not doing the Joey Freshwater act, and can not be a complete fool, I'd be willing to watch him for another season or two at these lower levels and see if he can be legit. He may not be the Freshwater fool, but at all 3 of his HC stops he's been a mess. I need to see some sustained maturity and success that isn't derailed because he's a clown.
He likes to have fun and his sense of humor goes straight over nerdy beat writers heads. It’s awesome when he’s destroying the conference but I’m sure it’d sour after a few losses. He’s not ready for an SEC head job but he’s closer than the media would have you believe. Definitely needs to work on his attention span, I’ve never seen a coach spend such a little amount of time in the office
