*** 2018 Maui Invitational ***

welp, the last 2 minutes really showed where Duke's youth is not necessarily an asset. was nice to see Duke on the other side of the refs favor (or at least see them in a evenly called game)

This is not a game thread just feel like this is a topic that needs starting. Can talk about Xavier. Talk about Duke, Zags anyone else in the field. Can house any pics of Bruce and the boys on the beaches of Maui that may circulate. Maybe a luau. Lot to discuss with festivities for this event starting later this week.

I’m so thankful today for this wonderful week of boogball. I have not even watched a football game, or given any thought to what’s coming up in us on Sat. I am sad it’s over. Does anyone know if we have been invited to any of the tournaments for next year? Assuming the lesser ones have not extended offers yet.

We accepted an invite to a tournament in Brooklyn. 4 team event with two fairly meh mid majors and still waiting on a fourth team. Hopefully a good team will sign on. I would have liked to see us back in a higher profile event. From the way Bruce talked, it sounds like he really had to work to get us the Maui invite so I guess it’s tough to get the invites for the other premier events as well.

Thanks. Could not find anything about it. Not sure why I am even thinking that far ahead. Guess that’s just what blue bloods do.

What a trip gang. Of course toppling Duke would have been the ultimate but a successful trip nevertheless in which we put the college basketball world on notice. It was no small consolation to have Bill on the call in our last game. Really the highlight of the whole event for me. Lets go through how the HYGs did:

Jared- The star of the squad. His stock soared in this event. I don't see anything topping that dunk all season. Blessed to have him. Not much else to say perhaps the best PG in the country.

Bryce- His game held up mostly. I still think he should be making like 45% 3s on the year. Showed some nice drives but the handle is certainly still not elite.

Austin- a revelation. Could see the switch flip before our eyes in the 2nd half against Duke. Just gonna be a terror the rest of the way. God bless him with good health.

Chuma- He's just so clearly our most talented player. Saw it in flashes in Maui but he didn't really put it all together. I'd love to see him play with the swag of the Duke 3 or Malik. I honestly think he was capable of taking over against Duke and being the star of that game if he played to his abilities.

Malik- He's really blossoming and AZ was his coming out party in front of his #1 fan Bill Walton. Shooting the 3. Putting it on the deck and finishing through contact. Showing some post moves and of course throwing it down with authority. Beautiful.

Samir- Really the biggest concern by far. He looked great against a pretty good UW squad but the friendly confines of the Clam can cover up a lot of blemishes. Looked slow. Looked lacking in strength. Shot and handle did not look D1 caliber. Had a couple timely steals and boards but it was ugly. Hopefully just a bad week for the youngster.

Horace/ Mac - Ho daddy really showcased what he can do on D and the glass. Honestly he looks better than Mac to me so far. Mac was ok but the J is not there yet. Need him to get that going. Think the Ho daddy 3pt experiment can go away now.

J'von - Had a nice stretch against AZ. I think he's coming along ok. Hard to say Jared played basically the whole tourney but I'm still hopeful he can settle in as a guy that can give us 10mins a night if needed.

And this gang has been EA: MAUI BILL EDITION

My hope on Samir is he's still dealing with the effects of the high ankle sprain which slowed him. I really like what he gives us on D in the press and defending well beyond the 3 point line. His ability to read passes and get steals for breakaway could be very big for us. Jared and Bryce and pull one of those off occasionally, but that appears to be something Samir can do with some regularity. If he is not 100% yet, hopefully we will see him play much more consistently soon.

In terms of lineup, my hope going forward is that Danjel comes back and plays like he did the first 9 games as a frosh. If does that, he's our starter at the 3. That would slide Samir over to work as Jared and Bryce's #2 as a combo guard. I think that might be his most valuable place for us as our 6th man.
