The dumbest thing typed on this website this month...and that's saying something...is the question "why didn't they say it pregame". Literally...in the entire Rivals network that's the least intelligent, sports wise thing posted. Housewives who yell "TOUCHDOWN" after they see a home run think this is dumb.
If you don't get it I can't help you. Obviously players and coaches think they can reset their goals. They think after crossing the finish line they made a huge deal of they can refocus and get their groove back. Obviously they don't walk into the gym thinking that they've quit. But human nature and years and years of history shows that in sports you find teams that set a goal, made it and then struggled when there were games remaining. Some Auburn based examples of this, without even having to look outside of our little world
- Tubs teams beating Top 5 teams and then playing like steaming piles of dog crap a week or two later when they had control over the SEC West, playing for a title and maybe more.
- 2017 AU football. After a bad start Gus made everything about getting to ATL. We played 2 amazing games right at the end and then as soon as we got to what we had set as the finish line the squad was done. They showed up in ATL trying hard but with no focus, no legs and no drive along with a stale coaching attack after 2 fantastic gameplans to attack our opponents.
I'm less forgiving of the football ones because our eyes shouldn't be on small steps or building the program. It's a national power level program so it shouldn't set goals like "beat top ranked LSU or UF". It shouldn't spend 100% of it's energy and focus on winning the SECW because it started slow and lost 2 games. But we haven't been to a Big Dance in 15 years and have only won 3 SEC titles in existence in hoops so I get setting markers and being satisfied when you get there as long was the next set of markers is higher.
I agree about the UGA game. We were mentally exhausted and physically. Your can’t be up emotionally every week.
KJ should have never played that game and as usual Gus had Zero plan for anyone else to step up. He didn’t do all he could to help us get a victory. We had an epic finish to our regular season and we gave out. Then the cluster eff of a game vs Central Florida. That was coaching as well as lack of interest as players thought more of the NFL. I never liked that matchup.
Football and Basketball are 2 very different sports. One player in b-ball can take over a game. Bryce or Jared could have gone off for 30 points and had the team rally around a hot hand.
Why did we lose vs Clemmy? Was it a collective lack of effort? I don’t think so. Horace played hard, he didn’t turn off a switch. This loss mainly goes to another game of just shooting terrible and horrible turnovers and that snowballing on itself. I don’t know why Harper and Brown turned into absolute chit at the end of the year. I can’t tell you how to correct missing wide open jumpers etc.
Part of me realizes what a tremendous home court advantage we have at the clam. Perhaps that arena offers a superior shooting back ground for deapth perception etc. I did see some straight up laziness and lack of movement with guys without the ball. I also saw some nice plays run that led to a missed layup or missed wide open shot.
We have not played good ball in a long time. We played great when a bunch of teams had not hit their peak. Mac’s injury forced us to play out of position, etc. But in the end, besides what I listed above, we shot horribly. If Jared and Bryce individually play well, we have a shot. It is very hard to win with those two playing so bad. Mustapha had some good ideas just couldn’t finish anything.
You made fun of me for propping up bam, but they were so much better than us in the post season. It was frustrating to see them and aTm improve late and watch us regress. Same with Kentucky. Maybe we just aren’t there yet talent wise. Next year has huge potential and I can’t wait to see how this team matures in the off season.
War Eagle! Have a great day!
