Boogs v Clemson ( Round of 32)

I’m just gonna say losing Mac was a huge blow even though on paper I thought we could still Boog to the sweet 16 and a couple more Ws without him. I think teams figured out how to frustrate Jared and we ran out of steam but this shitshow doesn’t happen if we have Mac spacing the floor and protecting the rim.

I underestimated how much we’d miss his spacing... Desean and Chuma didn’t shoot it well enough to compensate offensively for what we missed defensively

more than anything, just those 15-20 minutes a night stretched us beyond the point of no return

it sucks for so many reasons, but I got super bummed for a second when they flashed to him on the bench during the second half tonight... I hate it for all of those guys... we’ve got a chance to be so good next year though that I’m not letting this one get me down

I’m his biggest fan, but even I’m not ready to go there... Davion has miles to go to become the scoring threat he needs to be to unleash his full offensive potential

Jared took a HUGE leap this year, and I expect him to be even better next year

I’m excited to see who comes back, and how we fill any open roster spots and see how the pieces fit together, but a month ago we thought Jared should be SEC POTY... I’ll take those first 4 months over the last 4 weeks and say that’s the guy we’ll be getting next year too

I hope so!

I agree, we all tried to convince ourselves the Mac loss wasn't as big as it was. I also think we underestimated how long this season was for our players because we lost two contributors before game 1. Think of how few times we got to chalk line someone because 10-15 points isn't safe with walk on chalkies.

It's a good thing I'm not in possession of Jason Bourne skills, cause I'd waste them on human trash like him and Pat Forde when I should be doing better.
Back when that show “Dexter” was on, I asked my wife if she cared if I did what he was doing if she died and I “had nothing else to live for.” She looked at me with straightest face ever and said “I thought that was why you were buying all of those guns and doing all of that long distance shooting training.” Work on your skills a little bit and we might be a formidable team.

I thought the offense wouldn’t miss a beat without Mac. I think it’s safe to say that was wrong. Whether it was causation or correlation could be argued I suppose, but goodness we fell off a cliff

I am proud of Horace for his fight. Next year we are going to be salty AF if we get errybuddy back (including a healthy Mac) plus AW and DP. We will no longer live and die by the 3.

How does she compare to Hannah McKay?

I’m willing to place this late season collapse at the feet of Keim, if the rest of you are on board with that

I love Chuma and he's got a magnificent future ahead of him, but he went from truly impacting games to completely lost in the last few weeks. Not sure why he hit a wall, but he did. He went from amazing me by guarding some of the leagues most well known bigs and harassing the hell out of them while knocking down corner 3's at a high rate because those bigs don't like to defend out there to missing entirely too many open looks and being completely bullied in the paint. If Mac is around, Chuma is having to do less for the last 6 weeks and he's probably still impacting games in a positive way when he comes in. We put a lot on him, he handled it briefly and then hit a wall I think. He was meant to be a smaller role player this year, a quick mismatch from the bench and changeup guy and when we needed him to be our 6th man stud pony he did it for a bit and then just hit the wall and couldn't do it anymore. Teams got film on it and prepared for it and just started finding the holes in his young game.

This is how everything worked with losing Mac too. Heron had to spend more time in the paint defending and rebounding, which seemed to wear on him. Our guards were harassed by bigs off screens in ways they couldn't be when Mac was the screener. Our spacing sucked more so teams frustrated us. People that don't think losing Mac had anything to do with our shooting % going down don't seem to want to look further than "well he only took 3-4 from 3 point range per game". It impacted everything because we were already missing 2 studs and couldn't afford to miss any starter. Period.

so do we change our stance that this team was better than 1999?

Pre-Mac injury, this team was playing better ball than the 99 squad IMO. Best for best I'd take this team because they would light up a gym in ways you cannot replicate. We were really unique and that made us hard to play against. 99 was a little more predictable IMO. But by the end this team wasn't a very good team anymore. We just got beat up and lost momentum and confidence.

I'll still call it one of the most fun AU hoops years. We finally got The Clam close to where it should be and we get to hang a banner. It didn't end well but I had a ton of fun on the ride. It's probably not the best AU hoops team ever, but it was the most shockingly fun ride.

Staph said something to the effect of we didn’t care that much after winning the reg season title. Which I thought was kind of a cop out but I think we expended way more energy than any team in the county to accomplish that. Thought a couple weeks would be enough to recharge the batteries but hard to turn it back on.

Anyway this is my takeaway from the season:

I can believe it after watching them. I don't quite understand why, but a switch was turned off between then and the SEC tourney

We played meh in the first half of the SECT Bama game and scored 41 and had a 10 point lead. We just sucked after that. Probably 45-50 teams in the tourney would’ve beaten us in round one if we had played that poorly. It’s like the end of football season for me to an extent. Hard to appreciate what we accomplished this morning. It will come back though when this sting is gone.

Shout out to @Denim Vest for all the great game threads this season. Looking forward to Boogs vs Barry(or whomever the unfortunate bunch gets us in game one next year)!!

I 100% understand it for the SECT because that's exactly the way I felt. We were limping to the finish anyway, had to get Boog level performances at home vs bama and then USCe after a bad start to hold on to that title and it took everything we had. I cared 0 about the SECT and said that if we won a game and were 2 games from another banner I'd get on board...either lose the first game or win it all IMO. Once we started the 2nd half like crap it looked like the team had the same opinion.

I believe they tried to get up for the NCAA's but they just didn't have it in them anymore and you can't flip the switch that easily. When you make the finish line the SEC regular season title you can't just reboot. Sucks but that looks like the reality to me. The good news is that if we get most guys back (and keep Bruce) we'll be much more focused on tourney success next season and Bruce has typically been a very good tourney coach.

is it time for the “official” off season thread?

anyway, I agree on BRUCE typically shining brightest in tourney setups... his style and depth and roster/minute management lends itself to peaking in February/March... it’s why I was so excited in February, because we were on track for something truly special

9 guys gave us no margin for error, but the pieces fit so well that when March rolled around and teams shortened their bench, we wouldn’t miss a beat... dropping to 8 was just a killer... an absolute killer

zod help the world if we’re rolling 11 deep - with Austin - next year

edit - I forgot Stunning? Samir... Smooth Samir?... Sensual Samir?... ok I’ll stop forcing it and let it come to me when he takes the court... regardless, make that 12

That's 50% more boogin' than we had available by end of season.

I can't let myself believe we'll get everyone back. We're going to lose some guys. Just keep Bruce dammit. That's all that matters right now. Once that is settled we should be good to go and I think even if we lose some guys we don't expect to we can be very, very good next year. Time to string together a run of NCAA tourney bids and make AU a basketball school

We already lost somebody that I don't want to talk about cause of some rotten low level asst girls corch. We gonna be a solid 10 strong with another 1 or 2 scholly players available at worst. We boog hard next year believe that.

An SEC champions banner and a second round tourney banner to add to the rafters is a successful year once we've had a chance to get the curb stomping last night out of our minds.

Bar will only be set higher from here, especially if most come back

Here's the article with the Staph quote I was referring to:
http://www.al.com/auburnbasketball/index.ssf/2018/03/clemson_ravages_auburn_histori.html

Davion talking about him and Malik nearly brought a tear to my eye.

asking Davion if he wants to play hard is like asking him if he’s breathing...

smooth out that j a little bit more... keep learning when to pass and when to look to score when he drives... I’m gonna end up with a 10 jersey that says “My Son” or “Proud Papa” or “Davion’s Dad” before he leaves

Not sure exactly. Probably in the next week or two. The deadline to enter your name is April 22nd. The deadline to withdraw is June 11th. So there may be a sweat on Heron and Wiley. Right now, I don't expect either of them back.
It would just be so stupid for Stapha to leave. I don’t understand what would be going through his mind.

...but look at what these guys have been through.
They lost Danjel and Austin before the season started and had to deal with all the scandal that came with that including the non-stop barrage of media and opposing fan bases calling them cheaters. Then they lose Mac right as the team was starting to show signs of fading, they rally to secure a share of the conference champs despite being down another man and many guys forced to play new and expanded roles...they get to the post season on full sputter mode get shelled in StL, pull out an iffy 1st round win and get run out of the stadium in rd 2. These guys have to be gassed both mentally and physically.

[EDIT] Not to mention wondering if their entire coaching staff being fired at any moment

I'm so proud of them and grateful to be able to watch these hunky boogs bring some amazing hoops back to the plains.

Yeah, I just don't know. He's not a freak athlete. He's not an elite shooter. He's not ideally sized or long for any one position. He's pretty LH dominant with his ball handling. But he has a solid all-around game. Not sure that's enough to get into the NBA, but some people just have certain things set in their mind. He seems like a reasonable person, and it sounds like people have said the same about his parents. Maybe the draft process will give him good feedback and Auburn will be able to help him improve in those areas and prepare him for getting drafted.

I don’t buy this switch turning off bs many are pushing. You can only control what you do. They can’t control the coaching or injuries or the FBI. What they can control is hustle, shot selection, defense, etc. This “woe is me” narrative is frankly insulting and a cop out.

You’re trying way way too hard now. It’s really sad to see what you devolved into

The excuse making is on the verge of pathetic. We got our azzes beat by a team that played better. To say our guys “weren’t into it since they clinched the SEC Conference Championship” is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. That is an insult to our players and staff. That said, Bryce Brown did look like a little bish out there. I guess this is what to expect from millennials?
