+++++Official New Mexico St. vs Boogs Tourney Game Thread+++++

Don’t know if it’s been discussed but the ball going out on Samir that gave them the last shot was a foul on them. BUT it only happened because Mac didn’t box out.

I also thought the NMSU player knocked it out of Samir’s hands, which seemed pretty clear on replay. You just couldn’t tell if Samir touched it again after that.

@jeramye your keys to success we’re pretty accurate. We forced 16 turnovers, got killed on the boards 39-24, and shot 12-31 (38.7%) from 3. So that’s 2 of 3 (maybe only 1 of 3 if you had a certain number of turnovers necessary).

No certain number, just win the TO +/-

I think I probably would need to add some kind of sliding scale to really lock this in. It's a really good basic way to look at it, but we were up at one point b/c we were like +11 on turnovers and had barely turned it over ourselves...we weren't winning the OREBS and our 3% was like 32%. There are some levels where we can win or lose one of these in such huge fashion that it overpowers the others.

We didn't really get great performances from many today

McLemore was absolutely terrible, again. He's not going to get better. Even when they don't call him for fouls he's spazzing out and it looks like a foul

Okeke was good but not as good as I think we need him to be. Only 1 non-3 point bucket. Wasn't able to do anything on the block. You'd think against that team he'd find mismatches.

Dunbar was absolutely out of his mind to start the game. Like he'd never played in front of crowd in his life levels of nervous.

Harper was good fine until the last 2 minutes and then blew a gasket I've never seen him blow. Just lost his place. and the FT's...dude, you are the guy we trust you can't be missing those. There was a point we should have been up 16 and we're only up 11 b/c our best FT shooters went 0-5.

Brown was not good. Forced it way too much. His misses were BAD misses, like not close. His defense was average and we need more from him there.

Purifoy looks fixed offensively, but his defense drives me nuts a lot of the time still. He just loses track of who he's supposed to be on. The stretches with Malik and Danjel look like Keystone Cops sometimes on D

Wiley was solid and I wanted to see more. 11 minutes but it felt like 5

McCormick the Player of The Game. I was gonna be sick if he missed those FTs and he knocked them down like a champ. Carried the weight after Harper went out and was good playing with Harper.

Ho Daddy - Mostly ineffective, didn't have the same energy level and was too foul prone

Doughty...just meh. I don't remember him doing much good or bad but he also missed FT's he doesn't typically miss.

That's one dude that played great ball and maybe 2-3 that were okay/good.

Bruce will fix this. I AM NOT WORRIED. we just needed that W. We are not about to have a Clemson type game. We are past that. Our Bench won’t allow us to be embarrassed.. Jared and Bryce WILL be better Saturday. Bruce needs to just calm them down and tell them don’t force anything and take what is given but be smart.

I think they are more fatigued mentally than we thought.

Maybe but that is also a bullshit cop out and we are past that. That said, I agree. Long flight, weird altitude, early game. That said it was VERY obvious we were a far better team. We will be settled down and well rested Saturday. Wiley needs more playing time. Jared shouldn’t be too tired because the past 2 games he has played a lot less minutes. But he still goes all out when he plays and that leads to mental mistakes. Come Saturday I expect those mistakes to dissipate.

It’s not a bullshit copout if it’s true and we don’t know if we are past it or not. There is more to being mentally tired that just playing time. It’s just strange the whole squad looked “off”.

Even with most of our guys having less than their A games, collectively we still played well enough as a team to blow NMSU out for 35+ mins. We turned them over 18 times and hit 38.7% of our 3s. As you have correctly pointed out, when we do well in those 2 areas we normally win comfortably which would have been the case today absent the collapse at the end. Getting out-rebounded by a smaller team by a huge margin was problematic though. We are going to have to do better against KU on the boards. We really need Mac to figure out whatever is going on and return to playing serviceably. Ho and Wiley have got to each pull down 5+ boards. It will be very tough to win if Chuma is the only dude working the glass.

We shot the ball well and turned them over at a high rate. The collapse at the end was clearly a series of mental lapses, but its not like the guys were sleep walking the whole game.

I have zero faith in Mac right now. We need Horace and Wiley to get boards and stay out of foul trouble IMO.

NM missed a ton of shots that helped but I didn’t think we did anything great really. I still say we were “off”

Other than the last 90 seconds, Harper played a very good game

Finished with:

17 points (led the team)
4 assists
Over 50% from field, including 50% from behind the arc

He had to sit a good bit early tho... He played well, he is a good scorer. I didn’t say he played bad but he certainly can play better.

We certainly weren't "on". I don't think we were completely off, but that was probably our C+/B- game until the last 2 minutes when we broke the scale for what an F is.

We weren't great in a lot of those SECT wins either. We were grinding a lot on this win streak. That's fine. Our best 2 performances were saved for the biggest 2 games. Hopefully that's what we've got here.

38% 3pt shooting and 18 turnovers is very good. The most encouraging part is we did that without any players having a great game outside of J'von. Being able to collectively do the things that make us successful without having any of our starters playing particularly well is impressive. Particularly that 3% with Bryce only going 2/8.
