OT: AUBURN BASKETBALL

Danjel is one of the most overhyped boogs I’ve seen in years, in any of our major sports programs.

We were arguably a better team last year when he wasn’t on the court.

That said, Wiley elevates is to a legit Sweet 16/Elite 8 contender.

Would have loved to see Danjel play the 3 though. Think it would have been a much better fit than the 4.

Hopefully you are as wrong on this as you were on Tanner Burns.
Having played for Tanner’s dad and knowing the family personally, I wasn’t wrong about Burns when I said he was gonna be offered last first round money, touching 98 and staying around 94-96 pretty consistently.

I was wrong when I said I didn’t think he would turn it down. But Mike told us that Butch did a hell of a job recruiting him and mapping out a plan for him that made it worth his while to turn it down.

That being said, weren’t we worried Stapha wouldn’t even be back THIS year before the season?

Danjel is very soft, doesn’t handle the ball exceptionally well, and doesn’t have the kind of consistent jumper to justify his complete worthlessness on defense.

I think he would have been better this year especially at a position that doesn't require you to be as physical but that's just a guess on my part.

Meh. He’s played like 2/3 of a season of college b-ball. Every chance in the world that he could be a lot better right now. And his jumper was pretty damn good

Staph may have plans to go pro, but he honestly doesn’t have the game right now. Need to see him get easier shots in 1v1 situations before I am ready to say he’s a legit pro prospect..

My only qualm with Stapha is that sometimes he’s too passive and doesn’t aggressively work for his shot. Like he’s almost too unselfish and willing to let others shine while he disappears into the background.

When he decides to take control, he’s an absolute monster.

I think Danjel is a really impressionable young dude. Would like to see him this year with a true man alpha leader like Desean Murray barking at his ass. I think it’d make a huge difference in his game. Danjel is super super talented

Where is Stapha going? He ain’t going to the NBA. So is he gonna transfer and sit out a year or is he gonna’ come play for my JSU gamecocks?

Probably declare for the draft but not sign with an agent. I think it’s obvious that he wants to leave. Wouldn’t surprise me if he opts for a D-League contract instead of sticking in Boogtown

If we have a good season he’ll come back. I read somewhere that a lot of his problem came from having a cancerous locker room. I think this has great chemistry and that’s not really a problem for him anymore. I just don’t see anyway he leaves when one more year could be enough to at least get him a second round draft grade.

I think the departure of TJ Dunans helped tremendously.

Hopefully you're right. He still got in a big fight with Bryce during the preseason game with Barry. Not sure Staph is the most popular dude on the Boog team.

I agree based on what he has produced in one season, but I would have liked to see how he fit in this years plan, guess we'll never know.

Anything useful or interesting in JLee's latest Hoops Scoops?

No visitors until after the season. Kinda feels like an NCAA sanction, or an Auburn-proposed, NCAA accepted punishment for Person. Akingbola is likely our best/most likely HS prospect to sign in the spring. Scholly numbers are tight right now so number firm to offer anyone until we know about Heron, Purifoy, and Wiley.

He'll declare and see what the league says without signing with an agent. Depending on the feedback he gets he'll go from there. I think we have to wait to see how this season plays out to properly rate him TBH. He could go on fire, dominate some games and his stock shoot up. He could be a solid player helping us win games but not doing much in the way of NBA type spectacular and his grade could end up mediocre enough he returns. So much left to play and so much of that will change how he's perceived.

I had a buddy looking for two when we play uga later this month. He said they were $75 on Stubhub. I told him I don't pay that much for football tickets. It's good to see some interest in the program.

Nice read from Jay Bilas even if he has our books slightly underrated:

Yeah. Read this this morning. Didn’t really like the “team of unknowns” comment but whatever. Doubt he’s watched too much Boog ball yet

We're either way too low or UTjr is way too high.

I know that have a nice win against Purdue and a tough SOS, but I’m sort of wondering why they’re so high too. Those two early conference losses are more indicative of who Tennessee is than an early season game

They definitely played a tough pre season schedule. The road wins against the ACC teams early have to be giving them a huge boost. They choked against UNC to lose and got killed by NOVA in the second half of that game. The UK win helps but o expect us to beat them at home too. They just aren't the same as usual at this point.

It's all about that UNC game to guys like Bilas. Brand matters. Having that brand beaten and looking great for most of the game is giving them a big boosts in a lot of experts minds.

The wins vs the other ACC teams and scheduling tough help the RPI. But the flattering commentary is all about that UNC game IMO.

Plus, they have a marquee name on their roster. Grant Williams is becoming a household name.
