OT: AUBURN BASKETBALL

the 98/99 team would get run off the court against this squad...

Mamadou wasn’t enough of a threat to punish Mac or Horace on the offensive end, and would have no chance guarding as many ball screens 30 feet from the basket as this squad would force him to...

and god bless Scotty Pohlman, but he’d be the 4th best guard on this team, and would have no chance to create or defend against any of the 3 we’ve got... go look at his shooting numbers - he was 38% from 3 in 98/99, and godawful the other 3 years, but people are nostalgic about a short, little, floppy haired dude who got hot once a month...

Porter, Smith & Doc would fit in with these guys and compete - but the real difference is the depth... I mean, come on

Jared, Davion, Malik, Chuma, Horace
vs
Jay Heard, Fish, Mac McGadney, Adrian Chilliest, David Hamilton

Fish is the only guy who’d sniff the court for this years team... the game has changed, we’d take and make too many 3’s for them to keep up, and don’t even look at the FT numbers

this years team probably sweeps in a 7 game series... wins in 5 at worst

Agreed! That 98-99 team doesn't stand a chance against this bunch and would be a terrible matchup for the Cliff Dwellers. Could you imagine Adrian Chilliest or David Hamilton trying to run and defend against this bunch? Murray/Chuma would have a field day!

yeah - it’s not a knock against that team, but the game has progressed by leaps and bounds the last 20 years... the current game is galaxies ahead from a strategy - advanced metrics - floor spacing - minutes distribution - overall generally intellectual standpoint

it’s not a fair comparison to make to expect people from 20 years ago to compete... they’re barely even playing the same game

Who the hell is going to stop CP or Bryant Smith? CP was a man among boys.

Spelled out like this is entirely correct. Even homer Jay Barker (he is his own best fan) admits the bammers of 92 could not compete in Hut Hut with todays teams in any sport.
And his line score in the 92/93 MNC Game
4-13-18-0-2 & no Google
QB rating had to be in the negatives.

Also, 4 out of the 5 starters for the 98-99 averaged 25+ min a game. Mom-uh-dew averaged the fewest min of the starters with 23.8 min per game. Smith and Robinson were damn near at 30 min per game. That's a recipe for disaster against the 2017-18 bunch.

If the 98-99 team added 2003 Marquis Daniels as well, would they still get run? He was legit for sure.

I think this year's team is a lot better than the 98-99 team, BUT (and I'm basing this off of a very few memories as I didn't get to watch many games back then) it seems like our fast pace would be good for the 98-99 team. I feel like it would be a fast paced game with a lot of dunks on both ends. It's when the game slows down that we would actually be a lot better, which is funny because that's basically the opposite of every game now.

Thanks @Eagle5

Jerry Palm on Jox

Has AU as a 2 seed (updated), and had this to say:

“In addition to the four 1 seeds, I’d put Auburn in the group that it wouldn’t be surprising to see them win the national championship.”

We’ve come a long way since the Music City Bowl.
Oh my god...

I refuse to allow myself to believe it yet. I need to see us take down a UF or UK I think. That might be the thing that I'm missing so far. We've beaten plenty of pretty good teams, but don't think we have that one big pelt on the wall of a highly talented, Elite Eight type team.

I'm also worried about our big guys and foul trouble. Its been an issue the last few games but we've figured out ways to deal with it. Not sure that can continue much longer and I really need Mac/Horace to avoid bad fouls and be in good shape at the half of games now. We can't enter halftime with both sitting on 3 all the time.

But if they give us a draw where our games are in the southeast and we face the right teams I wouldn't be shocked to see us playing for a spot in the Final Four with a good crowd advantage. Give this team a feel of home court and look out.

Statistically speaking, Jared is having a better season as a sophomore than Doc ever had in his whole career. More ppg, more assists, and less turnovers. I really don’t know who’d get on this squad from the 99 team, but like Tarp said, it was a lot harder to watch all the games then and I was pretty young

Thanks for providing evidence that shows what we have all been saying. I'm even more convinced now the 17-18 team would delittle 98-99 team. Thanks!

You may be right.

I find in today's world we often say that "this team would blow out that team". We should probably focus more on those teams compared to their peers I guess. I still consider the 2004 AU football team the most complete team my eyes have ever seen. For that season I think they were the best team. Could Cam's team of the 2013 team beat them? Maybe, but it kind of spoils it a little bit because I freaking loved that 2004 team just like I have great memories of the 98/99 team. Fvck , our football team was so terrible then. It would be my luck the years I was at AU as a student we were a basketball school. That team brought so much joy to campus, just like this years team is. So I am just going to enjoy this team for who they are I guess. Its not often we have a team this good.

All that being said, Michael Jordan is still the greatest, lol.
