OT: I find Timeout mismanagement to be an offense I'd fire over

Not as the HC he won't. He may live in town, but he's about to be toast. He's going 7-5 with no good wins and he's gonna get fired. He lost some people today. He'll lose more with each loss. He's gone. Not even the mess around the AD right now will save him IMO.

We won't be A&M. We are going to get beat by 30+ by both UGA and bama. The defense will get pissed off, stop being their best and sustain injuries before we get to those games. The offense is what you saw. I mean if we can't get you with basic runs we have nothing and those two rivals will shut it down from snap #1. When you put those losses with the stuff from last year he's gonna have zero friends left and a ton of angry $$ guys who didn't really believe in him before this season.
I hope you're right, but I'll believe it when I see it.

If he gets to the Citrus bowl, half of the fan base will be happy.

AU will be 7-5 and Gus will get his requisite extension. I don't understand why a smart guy like you doesn't believe that. It's the same thing every year. It's who AU is. It's like everyone gets amnesia every year.

Well history tells me he'll be fired if he goes 7-5. The last 4 AU coaches, dating back to the early 80's, were fired for less than 3 consecutive seasons of 4-5 losses.

Pat Dye's last 3 seasons were 8-3-1, 5-6 and 5-5-1.

Terry Bowden went 10-3 and the next year was fired before the season ended.

Tubs was going to get fired in 2003 till we JetGate'd ourselves and public pressure screwed it up. He was getting fired for going through 3 years of 5 loss/4 loss/5 loss. Then he did get fired after a 3 year run of 11-2, 9-4 and 5-7

Chizik got fired after a national title, 8-5 and 3-9.

Even Doug Barfield only survived 3 consecutive seasons of 4+ losses when they were his first 3 seasons.

There is simply no historical evidence that Auburn will allow you to keep your job if you have 3 years of 4+ losses. I know the AU fanbase is convinced we accept mediocrity more than other top programs, but we simply don't have evidence that says that is true. I think we have a corrupt good-ole-boy system that keeps us from hiring the right guys, but settling for 8-4 over and over....no we don't have a history of doing that. Richt once had 3 starting years like that and kept his job, had one good year and went 8-5 the next. He kept his job. AU doesn't have a single case like that.

AU is screwed up in a ton of ways. I think we should have fired Gus last year not because of the actual record he had, but because what was obvious to all of us with brains. Now it's happening and they'll fire him unless he finds a way to win games he shouldn't. That's what AU history says will happen IMO.

None of those guys have a similar situation to Gus. Not even close. Tubs and Chiz missed bowl games and got canned. Bowden and Dye were in a different era entirely. I just don't think your evidence is applicable.

Gus is holding steady at 7.5 wins. 85-90% of the fan base is totally fine with that. The situation with the athletic director also leads me to believe a change won't be made.

85-90% of the fanbase just can't wait for the new jumbotron. Boogs have the coach we deserve.

Yes missing a bowl unless it's in your 1st year is basically an auto-fire at Auburn. But history shows we simply are not this lazy, mediocrity craving fan base that you are selling right now. We simply don't have any record of allowing a HC to string together 7-8 win seasons forever and keep his job.

Again, run some comparisons to the top 6 SEC programs and there is no way you come out of that determined that AU is the most patient, most lenient program with the fans that are satisfied with mediocrity in terms of W/L record. It's just not there. There are tons of areas to criticize that you can make great points on, this simply isn't one that has any proof other than "some boogs on a message board and WarBlogle always defend Gus". Do we make terrible hires? Yes. Do our power brokers crave access and control more than they value an elite coach? Yes. But they do those things not because they want to sip lemonade and chill, but because they think they are smarter than everyone else and can guide us to great seasons better than someone like Gary Patterson could. They are morons, not easily satisfied alums that just want to chill on 8 wins. There is no evidence in our history of that being part of our DNA.

This LSU loss was a game changer. Lose to UGA and bama he gone.
This. Gus can't beat anyone with a pulse, and now he is losing to himself in must win situations. The first six of the streak in Red Stick were not his doing, but the weight of the streak certainly will weigh on his future.

Inability to end that streak when Ed Orgeron is in charge and they just lost to Troy frickin St two weeks ago combined with 0 wins over UGA or Saban U since 2013 and you are toast. 4 straight to us lost Mike Shula his job and he was a beloved alum. You can't survive that in a rivalry like this.

I don't think we've ever been in a situation quite like this though. So, yeah, there's no history that shows Auburn fans are too patient. I just think with the way the culture has been for the better part of the last decade that it's obvious that most folks are cool with truly competing for championships every now and again, but don't demand excellence.

Here's part of an exchange I had on the Boog Bored last night. Perfectly encapsulates the typical Auburn attitude.

Every alum I know is super pissed about this loss. Not a single guy a talk to is happy with Gus. As far a tickets go, we’ve been in section 13 since before I was born. Kind of hard to throw those years of ticket priority in the trash over a few bad years.

Outraged. Completely outraged and so is everyone he knows. But not enough to do a damn thing about it. Jacobs, Leath, and anyone else who matters thinks this guy is pleased as punch. They have no reason not to.

I think we're just gonna disagree about what that guy should do. I don't blame anyone for not giving up their ticket priority. The damn system is structured with the entire idea of being to screw people over that try to protest that way and punish them so that they cannot enjoy future successes the way they'd like. People spend decades getting to where they want, find themselves surrounded by people they enjoy being around and if you back out when you come back you might be with our trash fans in trash sections, half of the time surrounded by opposing fans b/c someone is selling them off every week. If those people are angry and voice concerns up the chain that's all I ask of them.

My fundamental difference with your line of thinking is that I don't think our fans are just sitting around happy with 7.5 wins a year and you seem to believe they are. My experience tells me guys like rice are 1/10th or less of the fanbase. WarBlogle types don't represent the average fan at all. I don't meet anyone in real life that talks like those 2. Those are sunshine pumpers who can't live with accepting that our HC sucks because they'd have to accept that the remainder of the season is hopeless. Those fools will get on board with whoever we hire b/c they can't help themselves. They need to have hope. I don't believe the AU fanbase is the issue...I also don't believe it's a unique and special snowflake. It's like the fans at UGA or UF or LSU. It's the same. We're just as demanding as any of them. Our issue is we got an unqualified hick in the AD's office, he started making a salary he knows he cannot touch anywhere else and so he has wedged himself into every area of power and made decisions based on what keeps him his job over what is best for AU. That's not the fan bases fault. That's on him and a very small circle of people that helped him achieve that status without realizing what they were creating. You can't give a man a job he has no chance to get elsewhere. Not just because he will suck at it b/c he's unqualified....but when he realizes that if he gets fired he will take a 70% payout he will use anything and everything within his power to keep himself there. He won't surrender. He won't relent to pressure. He'll covertly either rally powerful people to his side by bribing them or threatening to show everyone where the bodies are buried. He's been doing it for a decade. The only reason we're going to be able to get rid of him is that enough bodies have been uncovered now and he's got no hand left to play.

I'm somewhere in between you and Toast. Yes it's crappy people have to give up their priority to truly protest. That being said, what's the point in having priority seating for a shit show product? Tickets will always be available on the secondary market for games you truly want to go to and you don't have to support the AD to get them. If people truly cared, and not just paid lip service to, about winning or at least not looking like a complete embarassment they'd let their dissatisfaction be known through all available means.

I just think there are ways to do this without screwing yourself over. I mean how many generic requests for donations does the average TUF member get in a year? It seems like it's weekly sometimes. Every call, every letter, every email should get a response of "I will not donate a penny above my required amount for ticket status until changes are made at AD and HC. If those changes do not come I will eventually stop those donation/purchases as well.

You get 10k responses like that and a true blackball on any additional $ to the school in any way at all and they'll pay attention. You don't have to give up seats to get it.

I know lots of people in the prime scholarship seating use those tickets for business purposes and the last thing they want to do is end up with crap tickets when this turns around (it always does at some point) and they are having to go buy good tickets off the market to put their best customers in decent seats instead of in the EZ or upper deck corner near the opponents section.

@jeramye how do you feel about accepting holding penalties when your defense got an 8 yard sack???
Why do you want my blood pressure up again?
I think the loss was 6 to be fair. It doesn’t make it any better though. Moron decided 1st and 20 was better than 2nd and 16. How damn stupid is that exactly? Well no DC in his right mind would refuse to give up 4 yards on 1st and 20...which would leave you with 2nd & 16. They’d take it all day. Every day. Yet our HC basically passed on that.

That spot and the TO he called before the Arky field goal (100% the right time to take a TO by the way) only to run the freaking dive play and then decide since we didn’t gain 20 yards it was cool to go to the half. Those were the 2 “oh yeah he’s a moron” moments in a blowout win.
